Evening All, Just built our first batch of Windows 7 Desktops. I've not really had much experience with Group Policy before and am looking to create some policies to lock down the new Winows 7 machines. Could anyone recommend any decent resources or best practice guides to locking down workstations for Students? Thanks in advance,

You can disable it but unfortunately the pens stop working... Either put up with it or revert to an older version I guess...

Rebuilding all our machines over the summer so deploying the latest software and updates for everything. Our old Smart Board software just allowed us to draw on top of everything. This was easy to use and pretty much pick up and play so an idiot could fathom it out. Since using the new version it comes with something called Smart INK which wants to open up drawing areas all over the place whenever you use the pens. I have managed to turn the transparency down to 25% but it's still intrusive and isn't as friendly to use as before. Is it possible to just have the Smart Boards be pick a pen up and it draws on the screen? Or is Smart INK the way it's done these days?

Just a quick one. SCCM is pretty much set up and working here save for one thing. Any OSD seems to set the Keyboard and Date settings to US. Is there a way to set this to UK either on the task sequence during OSD or via group policy afterwards?

Like midweek says... Setting up your boundaries and discovery methods is probably you're next port of call. After that I'd make sure you can get your client installing on some test machines and they are reporting back a-ok. After that it really depends on what your priorities are... EndPoint? Windows Updates? Deploying Applications? Operating System Deployment? What sort of error messages are you getting anyway?

I don't suppose you'd be kind enough to paste the command line you call to get it to install. I must be doing something stupid as it's not working for me!

Do you only need the "SimsApplicationSetup.exe"? Can I just copy that to my source files share on the SCCM Server? Or does it need the entire setups folder to be referenced?

Just trying to work out a way to deploy SIMS via SCCM. Has anyone got any experience with this at all? As it stands I've currently got a nice batch file which when run calls the setup files on the SIMS Server and copies the connect.ini and sims.ini to the relevant locations on the computer it's run from. When I call this by hand it runs as expected and everyone is happy Now... I've created a package in SCCM which will contains the batch file. I've deployed the package out to software center to test it installs. When I "install" the package the batch file runs however I'm given a load of "access denied" messages within the batch file when is running! Obviously whatever is invoking the batch file doesn't have the relevant permissions to access the setup files on the SIMS Server but does anyone have any idea of where I should be looking to try and fix the issue and how I can make sure it installs a-ok? Hope someone can help as would like to get this sorted out tomorrow.

Just looking for some advice if possible. We're building 120 brand new Windows 7 Laptops. The plan is for Staff to get these before we break up so we can rebuild the old laptops over the Summer and reuse them as Student Laptops for the new term. Staff home areas are currently on Server 1 and File Syncing is currently set on their old Windows XP laptops so they can work on their documents at home, then when they come back on site their documents will be Sync'd with their home areas on Server 1. Now... we're planning on moving their home areas to Server 2 over the summer. If we set Folder Syncing on their home area on the new laptops before they go away to sync to their H: drive on Server One and they come back and we've changed their home area to point to Server Two is that going to cause any issues with Syncing their home areas as they will be pointing to a new location? Or is it best to not enable Folder Syncing until they come back after the Summer? And instead allow them to copy their documents they will need to a folder on their laptop and then when they come back in enable Folder Syncing? Any suggestions?

Just remoted onto the laptop now and can see it's got all the options. Seems like it's pulled down the client settings since the client first went on. Good times. Still unsure why the client wouldn't work when using the Build and Capture generated image. Something about not liking the fact it had the client instead in the image?

Interesting... when deploying an image created using Build and Capture it fails as above. I have just deployed a Task Sequence using the install.wim straight from the DVD and it seems to have gotten further. The client can see the site code and has a UID for SCCM now. There don't seem to be as many options under the "actions" tab however as there were on computers already built where the Client was pushed out to. :/

That's nice to know. I've been struggling for a few days now on something and wanted to make sure I wasn't asking it to do the impossible. For some stupid reason when I deploy an OSD it installs fine and I can chose what OU to stick it in give it a name at run time however the Config Mgr Client just isn't playing ball... I made another topic on it so probably no need for two but just getting frustrated

Just want to make sure I have this right... I should be able to OSD a new computer which has never been on the domain before. Have it install the Config Mgr Client during the OSD and that computer then be immediately able to be managed by SCCM? This should be a fairly simple thing to do right? There are no caveats where the computer must already have an AD account or be known to SCCM before hand. I just want to make sure what I'm trying to do it achievable and practical before I start to lose my hair.

Still no luck and the above didn't help unfortunately. Also if it helps when I try and manually assign it to a site in Control Panel I get "Configuration Manager did not find a site to manage this client". Bah.

lol what's wrong with this one though? Maybe because it just sounds like me! But I don't get why people in IT are normally so happy to work longer hours than contracted, without pay and little to no gratitude?!?! I don't get why people who want to get out on time should be looked down on!

Morning Guys, We have a Laser Cutter Spirit GE. For the last few years it's been used by a Windows XP x86 box but unfortunately that has finally died! We've replaced the workstation with a Windows 7 x64 however are having issues installing the printer and getting the computer to talk to it. I have some x64 drivers for it and have installed them. The printer object is using the COM1 Serial Port. A "USB PRINTER" device is also showing on the Device and Printers. According the to installation guides I need to change the printer object to use USB001 Virtual USB Device Port which will connect the Printer Object to the "USB PRINTER" however I don't have the option of using a USB001 Virtual USB Port. Any ideas on how I can create one and if anyone else has ever had a similar situation? Thanks in advance,

I was just curious about the actual PXE boot... will a 32 bit machine be able to pxe boot using the "smsboot\x64\wdsnbp.com" file or will I need to edit the dhcp option to "smsboot\x86\wdsnbp.com" whenever I plan on building a 32 bit machine?

Quick question... even though the path has "x64" will it still work with 32 bit clients? Or do I need to change the option depending on whether the client I'm deploying to is 64 or 32 bit?

Option 066 needs to be set to the IP of the SCCM Server Option 067 needs to be set to "smsboot\x64\wdsnbp.com" Also go to Administration > Site Configuration > Servesr and Site System Roles and go into the Distribution Point properties. Make sure the PXE options have been set up and enabled.

Ok... just performed a rebuild. Configuration Manager is showing up under Control Panel however it only has 6 tabs and is missing the "Configurations" tab. Under General it doesn't have any sort of information regarding the site code, certificate or management point! There errors I have are as follows... "unable to read SMS client cert from environment" Not restoring SMS client cert" "Non Fatal error 0x80070057" in sending task sequence execution message to MP" Failed to install SMS Client 0x80004005 "401 Authentication failure on request with anonymous access" "Failed to open \microsoft\sms\mobile client\registry ket" The client did not get checked for RWH OpLock Type? Any ideas?

Evening All, Two issues I've been having and hoping for some sort of help! 1) I can deploy Windows 7 using SCCM. It will install the drivers. Join the domain and also install the Config Manager Client however once the computer has finished building, despite the fact it has the client installed it's not showing up in SCCM as having the client installed and it can't communicate with the server. Is there something extra I need to do during the TS to enable it to connect and talk to the SCCM Server? 2) I have created an Office 2010 Application and placed in in the TS at the end to be installed however it never happens! Is there some sort of special way I need to add applications to enable them to be installed during OSD? I'm sure these questions are fairly basic but I'm having a bit of trouble with them. Hope someone can help!
