Thanks for the replies. I suppose the biggest benefit then is the fact that you can include applications and updates in the GOLDEN IMAGE and save time when deploying in the future.

Morning Guys, I'm sure there is a perfectly reasonable reason for Build and Capture over straight up building from scratch with a Task Sequence and the base "install.wim" but I'm not sure what it is! From my understanding is that purpose of B&C is to create an image that you can use in future deployment Task Sequences anyway! Why use a "golden image" over a straight up Deployment from Scratch?

Why is it the f***ing second you make a thread like this you find the answer yourself... Adding my username explicitly under the "Admin Users" for the Configuration Manager console seemed to do the trick. Unsure why having "Domain Admins" in there didn't work though. Is this usual behaviour?

Evening All, Starting out with SCCM 2012 SP1 today and I've already hit a stumbling block! Today I Set up SQL Server and installed SCCM 2012 SP1 on a separate server. All in all it looks to be working ok. When logged on as Administrator everything seems to be fine and Config Manager works fine. However when I try and access the Configuration Manager as a domain admin I get the, apparently common, "The user account running the Configuration Manager console has insufficient permissions to read information from the Configuration Manager site database. The account must belong to a security role in Configuration Manager. The account must also have the Windows Server Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) Remote Activation permission for the computer running the Configuration Manager site server and the SMS Provider." Message. Can't figure out for the life of me where the issue is as it appears Domain Admins have access to all the same parts as the Administrator does. Long shot here as I've probably done something stupid but just putting this out there in the hope someone can say something that will cause an Eureka moment!

One of the pains we have is that when one of the major updates comes out we have to manually go round everyones computer and logon as an admin user and update SIMS manually. How are other people getting around this issue at other schools short of making all ends users local admins on workstations? We tend to lose half a morning the day after an update just going round manually updating workstations and I was hoping for some advice on a better weay to do it!

Morning Guys, What's the best way for kicking people out of SIMS and making sure no one is conected to the database when it comes to running patches and upgrades?

Nice to know you have a bit of control over what is installed and when. Thanks for the heads up everyone. Ash - That's good news! I'm happy to stick with SOLUS2 as long as possible to be honest so cheers for the update on the roadmap.

It's my understanding that SOLUS 2 is being retired in the Autumn and all schools will be forced to use Solus 3. What's the general opinion with SOLUS 3? I'm not a big lover of 3rd party tools for deploying apps over the network and would much rather the tried and tested MSI route but capita seem to insist of doing things their own way. So what is the general opinion with SOLUS 3? My biggest concern is that I'd like to be able to turn off automatic updates. I tend to wait a few weeks before installing an upgrade. Is this possible with SOLUS 3?

We have already virtualised about 20 servers. For the 3 hosts we're going to be purchasing Data Centre Licenses so that should cover us for those. It was just the 17 Enterprise Servers. I wasn't sure how to license those seeing as I have been getting mixed messages from our suppliers. The other thing I've been getting mixed messages over is the fact we're halfway through our agreement so different rules may apply?

So if I have 17 Physical Servers with Windows Enterprise on I only need 17 Standard Licenses? And not 34 like I was quoted?

So 2x Standard = 1 Ent? Or am I being mugged off?

Evening All, Just getting round to doing some Microsoft licensing for the first time. We're in our second year of our EES agreement and it's to do with our Server Licensing. We have 17 Physical Servers. I've got a few quotes on this. Our existing company is quoting 17x Server Enterprise at something like ~80 quid per unit. Another company is quoting 34x Server Standard at something like ~30 quid per unit. According to the second supplier, Server Enterprise licensing is now a thing of the past and if you want to be covered you can now do so by buying 2x Standard Licenses. Which actually works out cheaper. This is good for us as it's obviously cheaper. But I'm not convinced. Licensing seems a very complicated area so wanted some advice from the fine people on here if possible. Hope someone is in the know...

I know it was mentioned already but he's the latest update from SupportNet. This is what? Patch number 4?

It is better. But no where near as good as before. Still getting massive spikes on the server.

Just downloaded the patch and applied it using SOLUS. Only took about 30 seconds but managed to apply it with no issues. Started SIMS and managed to log in without needing to upgrade the client which is always a bonus. Seemed to load up the front page a lot quicker but that could be down to kicking everyone else off it before running the patch. Won't know until tomorrow but am hopeful.

Maybe you get different things shown depending on what you selected when signing up.

Just rang up support to request the patch and they are saying they will look into deploying it... Has anyone actually downloaded, installed and tested the new release?

Is there an easy way to do this at all?!?! Want to create a new single logon script instead of using the 20 we have at the moment. Want to map drives depending on what groups they are members of. Is there an easy way to do this?!?! Hope you can help!

Morning Guys, Bit of a strange one. Logon scripts are failing to run randomly at the moment. Running them manually once the user has logged on works fine however they won't load at logon. Error is "Could Not Execute Following Script \\*****\logon.bat. No application is associated with with the specified file for this operation". Any ideas? Only changes we've made recently are raising functional domain level to 2008r2 and moving a few shares around but shares work fine when running script manually. It seems to be random for who gets mapped and who doesn't.

Excellent. For as long as I can remember it's been set up like this where I work but I never really understood why. Now the old boss is gone and we need to move to a new box sometime soon I saw no reason why we couldn't stick it on one piece of kit. However not really being involved in SIMS before I wanted to ask what other people did first in case there was a reason for it I missed.

As it stands we have our Database and Document Server on a separate box to our SIMS Server. At the moment both the box that holds our SQL Server and the box that holds our SIMS Server are nearing End Of Life so I was wondering moving forward if it's best to keep them separate or to move them to the same new server? I've heard contradicting advise on what best practice is regarding SIMS so what do you do?

I've not been paying attention to this at all so apologies for the ignorance. The lines seem to have become very blurred between them in regards to MS Marketing. From my understanding... Office 2013 is just the next in the line of the standard desktop versions of Office like 2007, 2010 etc. Office 365 is basically the MS equivalent of Google Docs? If yes then would you only go with one? 2013 vs 365? Or would you get both because they work together well? I also understand the option is there to host your documents on the cloud for use in 365... does this mean an end to the spiralling mess that we call a library drive? Or are the documents sync'd between the cloud and your library drivers \ home areas etc? Is it a case of Office 365 for working from home and 2013 for working at work? Or is there more to it than that? Again sorry for what sounds like really basic questions but it's not something I've really been keeping upto date with at all.
