I followed these guides and didn't have any issues. One thing to bear in mind is making sure you AAD Connect client is up to date as older versions don't work with the conversion. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory/hybrid/how-to-connect-pta-quick-start https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory/hybrid/plan-migrate-adfs-pass-through-authentication

Just to add to this in case someone has a similar issue in previous versions of Windows 10 it wouldn't do a space check on the system volume before trying to install. We had some clients that kept on failing midway through installation and reverting back to the old version and tracked it down to the fact it was down to low disk space.

Sorry to resurrect an old topic but I'm curious if the people who decided to go with LTSB had any feedback on if it worked out well for them or if they needed to go full fat Windows instead for whatever reason.

[sims] Deploying SIMS - Is it still best practice to use SOLUS?
Sam_Brown posted a topic in MIS Systems
I got out of IT a few years back but ironically one of our clients is a school and have been asked to package up SIMS for them. I've not touched anything to do with SIMS in about 3 years so is it still best practice to deploy SIMS via SOLUS? All I've been given is the SIMSApplicationSetup.exe so unless things have changed I'm assuming If there is a relatively easy way to package SIMS up then I'm happy to do so providing it's a fairly straight forward process but if best practice is to still use SOLUS then more than happy to push back and say in this case it's not suitable for packaging up. Cheers in advance, -

RM CC4 User disappearing
Sam_Brown replied to Simon_Sion's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Been out of schools for years. is CC4 still quite popular? I remember managing it back about 6 years ago and surprised to still see a few topics on it pop up. Have they not replaced it with something new? -
For number 1 you should be able to create a new UPN to reflect the domain used in O365. Quick guide below to show you how to do this. Give it a test with one user before changing it for everyone https://docs.ukfast.co.uk/operatingsystems/windows/windowsadministration/addupnsuffix.html For number 2 ideally you want your username to match the primary e-mail address in O365. This will make life a lot easier when configuring outlook etc as I believe if it requests username and password to connect it will default to the primary e-mail address and not the username.

Of course. Interested in what you end up thinking about Bit Defender. Looks really good from what I've seen but not sure worth the hassle moving from Sophos when it's already rolled up and set up :/
-
Ah ok I was worried there was something big about Sophos that I'd missed over the recent weeks. Cheers for the link. I've already used it recently. To be honest doesn't seem much in it in terms of detection rates and as we're already with Sophos so was curious if there was some major flaw I was missing that would be worth looking at. What do you use out of curiositty?

What's happened with Sophos? Not heard anything bad and latest Gartner research still suggests they are a market leader. We're looking to potentially re-new with Sophos so if there's any reason not to that I'm unaware of then would obviously love to know!

Hi All, Had a request where admin team want to easily be able to update wallpaper on devices around the school. At the moment just pointing normal GPO setting to a file on a share accessible by admin team. The wall paper applied fine first time but when one of the admin team updates the wallpaper (keeping the same name just the image changes) the wall papers on client devices don't get updated. I assume that Windows sees the name is the same and doesn't bother to check it? But is there a better way to do this?! Also has anyone found a way to be able to change the lock screen or logon screen background at all? Seems there isn't an easy way to do this via GPO at the moment but again been requested...

Funnily enough, I've been doing this the last couple of days myself. We've currently been using Sophos Cloud Control which Gartner have cited as a market leader but we're interested in seeing what else is out there. Currently doing a review with Symantec, Sophos and Bit Defender. No issues with Sophos over the years and since moving to their cloud offering very easy to manage and maintain endpoints. Be interested to see what everyone else comes back with.

10k for the first time since 2015 yesterday. Not my fastest and a fair bit of walking at the beginning but really loosened up around 5k in and finished strongly so which I'm always happy with. Signed up on daily mile where reddit have a challenge going. Insane to see so many people already on 100 or 200 miles for the year and we're barely a month in! I'm with you guys on preferring colder weather. Was nice and drizzly yesterday but much more preferable to the times when sun is beating down on you.

Thanks for this. Helped me out tonight.

Pearson onscreen platform installation woes
Sam_Brown replied to IT_Man_Dan's topic in Educational Software
I never relied on the auto discover. Found it flakey. We just had a generic "exams" account that we logged on to all the computers and configured it first time manually so when the students used it was already set. If we had to change the location of the invigilator machines then we just created a new account "exams2" and did the same thing. Right ball ache was ended up being less time consuming then troubleshooting the software. Question - How many exams do you generally have running at a time? We just had the invigilator console installed on the server with the exams admin console and just let the invigilators connect to that. Makes life a lot easier. -
Pearson onscreen platform installation woes
Sam_Brown replied to IT_Man_Dan's topic in Educational Software
We've had this issue before. We ended up having to create a new user and run the exam as that user so we had the option to point to a new Invigilator machine. There might be a way to change this from within the existing user but never done this before. -
Have a tasimo at home as I got it on special offer and enough capsules to last me a lifteime but find that it only makes small drinks. Have a french press at work and prefer that as it's easier to use if you're making 3 or 4 cups at once.

[ms office - 2016] Packaging up "Office 365" for deployment?
Sam_Brown posted a topic in Office Software
Hi All, In the process of moving to O365 and currently building new rooms so looking for the best way to package up "Office 365". Seeing a lot of contradictory articles out there. Some suggesting just packaging up Office 2016 as you would for a normal install and others suggesting needing to create a custom "Click to Run" install. Dates vary on the articles so wondering what the best practice was these days. Also any gotchas to be wary of for making sure users can just log into windows and have "Office 365" activated based on their domain logon (will be setting up ADFS and setting the correct UPN for their account). -
Come on guys... it's only been 5 years!

Viewing Students Passwords Without Changing Them
Sam_Brown replied to Brad_Sarge's topic in How do you do....it?
You can't see what their passwords are unfortunately as they are encrypted with a non reversible function by default. Believe there are some options around allowing passwords to be stored in a reversible encrypted state but this is definitely not best practice and would create a massive security risk. What I would do is just give myself permissions to access their mail box and add it as an additional mailbox on outlook. Nice and simple and the students would have no idea you had done it. -
This is my current job. Looking with someone with good technical skills and ideally someone with experience of managing a windows 10 deployment and migration to Office 365. School is currently a single academy trust but plans are for this to grow in the future so this is a roll with some good future prospects. Any queries feel free to PM me. Secondary Vacancies

Ah ha. Well one less doubt for why it's a good idea to use LTSB then!
