  1. God only knows... but you do know SQL2000 is no longer supported? What's holding you back from upgrading?
  2. Reallt they should have waited for the R2 version of SQL - 2008 is dead already!
  3. Imagine the millions of pounds that would be saved in consolidation if schools would move on from this seperate networks nonsense which predates the 90's Take our overpaid LEA consultants with very little knowledge in what they deal with - on one hand they're telling schools to get "SIMS into the classroom" but under no circumstances should they put "admin" machines into classrooms or at any point join these networks to facilitate the overall objective. Just how do they expect school to go about this? We collapsed our network a few years ago - you are only paid to run one network afterall
  4. Im quite interested in this Trapeze solution mentioned earlier? We have a WX4400 controller which is many years old now and no longer supported - anyone know the likelihood of being able to replace this with something more modern without having to update all 100+ of our 3com AP2750 AP's?
  5. So because of these few numpties who have no idea what to do in the event of throttle pedal failure, how long until the European nanny state imposes some sort of ugly kill switch on the dashboards of our nice cars? Yes I know motorcycles have had these buttons since forever, but if it wasn't for their disgraceful riding behaviour they probably wouldn't need them.
  6. Well, the request forms have been sent out. Could anyone tell me what I *should* be asking for? For the past 3 years I've been given 10k to spend purely on IT "repairs" - this is for the upkeep of ~500 computers/laptops, 10ish servers, ~45 printers and all the infrastructure inbetween. Although I do tend to spend it on more wide-benefiting items such as infrastructure (as opposed to the abundance of broken laptop keyboards we've had this year) I make departments pay for cosumables such as projector bulbs and toner. Money for "new" computers/laptops/volume licensing comes from another pot of money that will stay pretty much unchanged We've also just had a sixth form built, bringing our total computer/laptop count to 700 now. So, would I be being a b*stard to ask for a bit more this year? Or am I asking too much? Especially given the current climate. To be honest 10k just about sees us through til February time but I end up postponing some in the 2nd part of the year incase of contingency. If anything major goes that I don't have in spares then I'd have to go to the bursar with my begging bowl. Just trying to guage what everyone else asks for really. Cheers
  7. It's just the switch throttling traffic to the management interface of the switch, nothing to worry about. If you ping a pc from a pc on the same switch that will give a better indication and should be <1ms if the PC isn't levering its network connection.
  8. Could I just ask what money that might be? We know a local primary that needs "some work" doing lets say, and any government money would be a godsend to them
  9. At the end of the day, Capita *have* to select one set of infrastructure to base their product. I am by no means an M$ fanboy but it makes sense - Capita have the support and backing of Microsoft with a reasonable turnaround time for problems, and the same with us humble users - if we have problems there are so many resources out there for MSSQL, all for free. If it was down to a lot of "technicians" we would all still be running SIMS on NT4 and SQLv6. And then Capita would be getting blamed for being irresponsible and allowing schools to run insecure and unsupported platforms They can't win. Re the comment about the OS upgrades - it's not just MSSQL that's the villain here - the latest version of MySQL only runs on Windows 2000 and Windows NT upwards - no support for Windows95 or earlier then?
  10. well, I made some progress, not as much as I would have liked though Figured out I needed to run the auth_ldap_sync_users.php and enrol_ldap_sync.php scripts on the server - d'oh however at first they weren't picking up the users (complained about not being able to find users in the tree despite it displaying the full distinguished name in the script output) so instead of using "cn" for the userid atribute in moodle I changed this to distinguisedNames - bingo, picks up all the staff and students now. I've only tried it with Teachers so far but when I logon to moodle now it does actually have that teacher assigned to that course, that's about as far as I got. Although I did notice when logged in as a teacher for that course, and clicking on the course, it still asks me "do I want to enroll on this course?". I'm documenting all this together with a standard setup guide for IIS7.5/SQL express 2008 for those users who have Microsoft imposed on them, i'll be posting it on the wiki once it's done. There is very limited documentation for those of us using anything other than Apache/MySQL
  11. Why are they costing millions of pounds in upgrades? 99% of schools should be able to get away with using SQL express. As for the actual upgrade - it's a piece of p*ss and anyone who needs to pay any extra to have this work done should, quite frankly, not be in charge of their servers etc... MSSQL is a database platform that is backed and well supported by MS - it would be madness to use any other free platform for something as critical as school MIS's
  12. Hmm, I had a memory leak problem on a 4400 a few weeks back which caused access points to drop, but upgrading to the latest version (7.x something) sorted that. You say you've had a replacement controller, so it's possibly not that that's causing it. How many ports does the 2200 have? You could try using another port and see how you get on with that. What about the patch lead that connects the controller to the switch? I've had dodgy cables cause similiar "dropped interfaces" before. How about your HP switch? Do you have a different switch you can try? If all that fails, hook a serial upto your WX console and capture the buffered logs - this may provide further clues.
  13. What software version is your WX running? Also do you use Wireless Switch Manager? (3WXM)
  14. Good point yes..I believe they are jailbroken - how would this make their wireless behave this way? I don't think it's malicious or anything..
  15. Here's a strange one. Both my technicians have an iPhone3g which is hooked upto the campus wireless. However it appears these phones are causing a DoS on any access point they associate with (rapid association/deassociation - after a few of these the AP shuts off for a few minutes, disconnecting anyone who may have been on it and preventing new connections). It only appears to affect these 2 iPhones that have the WPA2 key. Other iPhones that may be on site don't seem to be causing issues however I would to fix this before we roll out open wireless to kids! (as presumably some will have iPhones) Has anyone ever seen anything like this? As far as I know these iPhones are running the latest software and our wireless system (3com managed) is all upto date
  16. Oh well Murray is out - no suprise there Makes me laugh how the media hypes him up loads only for, as usual, to be let down at the final hurdle. Go Murray
  17. I'm no expert but if you run cat5 between 2 buildings don't you have to "earth" it or something (eg the same way telephone lines from the exchange to your house are "earthed")
  18. You pays yer money and you take the risk...caveaut emptor and all that... Netgear have always been lassez-fair about these things, not that Im saying HP or Cisco are paranoid about their market positions or anything Hopefully any switches you test the upgrade on would show this sort of thing up
  19. You can pick up "generic" modules for your netgear switches from the likes of hardware.com. Agilent AGM731F's are £50, whereas the "real deal" prosafe ones are about £150. I have these agilent ones all over the shop and they work fine, saved a packet too.
  20. Whilst the cooking method looks like fun, if this were to ever happen I would like to try and get HP to fix it first. Could you direct us as to how you got HP to sort this out even for out of warranty 2015's?
  21. Hmmm, I have read about the ldap sync script. However as I understand it I dont need this if I am checking groups/memberships each time the person logs onto moodle!? Thanks for the ideas anyway guys, plenty of fodder here to have a good crack at it this weekend, free from distractions
  22. I agree - that is a sickening amount of money to be p*ssing up against a wall. It's almost as sickening as giving money to the Taliban
  23. Oops_my_bad

    Toners!

Each month I print off a "hall of shame" top 10 tree burners report in papercut and put it on the staffroom notice board. Sit back and watch the fall out - usual comments along the lines of "no way did I print that much" etc... sorry luv, papercut don't lie Similar situation here - ironically the user in question claims to be a bit of an eco-warrior - you know the sort "did you drive all those 20 miles into work today" and the stupid "think before you print" on the bottom of his emails
  24. Thanks ckuntz, I have followed your advise which is consistent with what everyone else is saying, however my enrollment still fails. If you wouldn't mind, could you cast an eye over my configs? 25. Capita support all the time, and only when the excellent solution search fails me.
