Guys, Sorry to hijack but in a similar position... In terms of rebuilding SCCM from scratch on a new box if I use the same site code as the old server can I get the clients back by simply doing a push install of the SCCM client to overwrite the old one?

Woah wait what? So if I'm licensed for SCCM and Enterprise CALs under EES... are you saying we have access to SQL Standard through this? EDIT: I presume I'm not allowed to go and stick for example, SIMS or MBAM on this SQL Std install, it's exclusively for SCCM?

You need to turn off time synchronisation on your Hyper-V virtual machines (this stops your VMs syncing to the Hyper-V host time) and then point them all to your "primary" DC. On your primary DC use the following to set a preferred time server for updates: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc794937(v=ws.10).aspx. You should then tell all your client devices and servers to get their time from the DC using Group Policies. Be aware though, most LAs that provide broadband will block outbound NTP for security reasons, so you may need to contact them and find out if they run any.

That wildcard could be installed on any of your servers that are using HTTPS... be careful. If you're doing any wizardry or authentication through firewalls such as Sophos or Forefront you'll need to change the certificates on those too!

I had no problems doing in-place upgrades on our two domain controllers (+DNS, DHCP, file server, UniFi controller) from 2008R2. Obviously you can't do this on Exchange/SCCM/SQL boxes, which needs a swing migration... and is a mega pain in the ass for us SCCM users, so I've been putting it off for the past year.

You need to supervise your devices in Apple Configurator to stop the password prompts if I remember rightly.

You can disable this via GPO in Administrative Templates > System > Logon. Logon times for us are around the 1 minute mark on Windows 8 from cold boot to desktop, running i3 with 4GB RAM and a HDD.

Smoothie was vastly too expensive for us, ended up getting Sophos UTM at a third of the price (suppliers also had a bit more wiggle room) and I wouldn't go back to anything else. Perhaps not as good at Content Filtering, but it does a decent enough job considering it does a boat load of other stuff extremely well.

Yes, everyone's data is still on their clients since they were cached offline. I think this is going to be the only way around it...

Just tried it on a test user on a virtual machine (create account with roaming profile/folder redirections, login as user, make some files and make sure they sync, turn VM off, delete profile shares, VM back on, using cached stuff, VM back off, remake shares blank as new, VM back on) and lost all data for that account Need to find a way to do this...

Hi All, We recently had our first major server failure at school where, to cut a long story short, a RAID array ended up failed and took some backups out with it. Now, we didn't really lose too much information aside from our staff's roaming user profiles. Now at the moment all staff are still working fine since their profiles were entirely cached offline on their Win7/8/8.1 clients, but I need to fix the server side ASAP. Does anyone have any ideas on what to do in this situation? I fear if I remake all the user profile shares again then the Windows clients will freak out when they see empty folders and think they should clear their local caches too. I'm tempted to get a logon script to map a new drive and go around manually copying everyone's data to a new share and just seeing what happens, but was looking to you guys for any advice... (Yes, I've reworked our backup solution and now have DFS enabled across two servers for all our shares!)

Just to chime in... I'd say take the time to learn it. As others have said the cost is ridiculously low for education and actually once it's setup and running properly it's got a ton of useful features. We're only a primary school with around 40-50 Windows clients but I've found it's brilliant, particularly since I work off site most of the time. I'm working on getting totally automated rebuilds setup for staff at the moment, and they love the Software Catalogue functionality. The assetting and auditing that's built in has made it worth it's while already, since we were audited not long ago.

You need to use Intel RST (Rapid Storage Technology) software, which you can find here: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProdId=2101. Remember things for Windows 8.1 will work on Server 2012R2. I'm not sure why your RAID isn't showing up in your software, to me it doesn't look as if you've set it up in the BIOS as an Intel on board RAID. You can do this with non-SSL websites for sure, and it is just a case of using virtualhosts as you outlined... but (and I may be wrong!) adding SSL using just one IP address gets a little more complex and involves extra setup. I can't remember the name of the configs now though, sorry

If your users aren't admin and you have other sufficient restrictions in place, there's no reason why you can't leave command prompt wide open. It hinders more than it helps, particularly when trying to diagnose problems on the user's end.

Do you use HP or Dell machines? You could deploy a BIOS configuration to them remotely to require a password on BIOS boot menu or to remove PXE as first boot option. Otherwise can you not disable WDS when not in use? Alternatively, if you're using SCCM you can easily set a password on the task sequence...

SCCM... a bit overkill for our school but it's been incredibly useful for remote support and client monitoring.
