As far as the Apple kit goes, you don't necessarily need a Mac (although Apple Configurator does work very well)... I set ours up by hand initially, which just meant adding them to our Meraki MDM account (they have Android support coming soon, to be fair). Using the Meraki MDM you can put codes in you get from Apple VPP and it'll push the app out to the iPads automatically when you hit save. I'm a keen Android user at home, but realistically, the quality of Apps for education aren't as good on Android (yet!!) and overall "enterprise" management seems a bit lacking for deployments like ours... that isn't to say iOS doesn't have it's problems in our environment, like not being able to totally lock out the Settings app, but it's better than Google's offering at the moment. I don't know if it applies to you, but be wary of proxy servers with these devices, Android has a very quirky proxy implementation that doesn't work very well (on my SGS2 at least), whereas I haven't had any issues with our Forefront TMG proxy and our iPads.

You might be better off sticking with Google Play gift cards, which you should be able to find a supplier for somewhere so staff aren't spending their own money... Can't answer the others, we ended up going with iPads because there seems to be more "enterprise" support for them from Apple.

I had this problem and eventually gave up trying to do it. When I wanted to change them to Win7 Enterprise and image them I ended up splitting the first partition into two and making the second into a bootable Windows install, then when I was done I just deleted that partition and extended the original under the new Windows install. To get it onto the rest of the NC110s we had I ended up using Windows Deployment Services with PXE boot.

Have you got age restrictions on the password? Anything common between the two, that isn't common for others?

An SSD is literally the best upgrade you can do to any modern computer, I got one recently and it's amazing. I can get booted into Windows 8 and load the entire Office 2010 suite in about 25 seconds... the slowest points are the BIOS and my password entry!

That's my plan, generally our staff are fairly accommodating, but there'll be a couple who complain. I've been using the W8 RTM for a few days now, must admit the metro stuff isn't really that intrusive in daily usage, I only see it about once or twice a day.

Anyone got any ideas how we can remotely manage something like Classic Shell, through GPO or otherwise? I have a bunch of machines to image this week and I'm seriously contemplating Windows 8. We're a school that loves throwing the latest and greatest around if possible...

I don't seem to have any method of "purchasing" A2 plans in our Office365 Portal (was upgraded from Live@Edu this weekend), do you have to do anything in particular? All I can see is the Exchange Plan 1 on the licensing pages in the portal, nothing about A2, A3 or A4.

Hey, I've not touched UPNs before, so I have a bit of a problem. I'm deploying ADFS so we can introduce SSO with Office365, of course our internal domain doesn't match our school.xyz.sch.uk domain, though. Is adding a UPN suffix in AD and just changing all our staff user's UPN suffixes to this going to break anything in particular? I'm just playing in VMs at the moment, but I don't want to come to do this at school and find it breaks everything Thanks

What are the costs of CC4 over a vanilla network? We're a small primary and with the (relatively) new EES agreements MS bought in, we can do a lot of things we couldn't do before due to our budget. We're able to get all sorts of high end Enterprise software cheap as chips, I really don't see the point of the overhead of RM CC nowadays.

Can you not just set it to hidden, or is it automatically created as viewable? Doesn't let you remove the ability to change the passcode, as far as I remember? I'll take a look.

I'm looking into deploying some iPads (as much as I love them, urgh, not great in a school IMO...) and was wondering how you guys did a couple of things... 1. Is there a way for the iPads to automatically download an app if it's purchased on another iPad? 2. How do you stop children adding passcodes and fiddling with the settings? I have Meraki MDM setup on a couple of iPads, which works nicely but doesn't give us tight enough control really... we also don't have a Mac server. Thanks!

I know it's not necessarily a solution to your problem, but a lot of these issues go away if you ditch profiles and go with folder redirection.

Oh, I just totally forgot that we disable WDS' replies in it's Properties when we're not using it...

1. Connect to the wireless LAN and export the profile using: netsh wlan export profile folder="PATH_TO_FOLDER" name=PROFILENAME 2. Store the profile in %WINDIR%\Setup\Scripts\wireless.xml 3. Write this into SetupComplete.cmd and store it in the same folder as above: netsh wlan add profile filename="c:\Windows\Setup\Scripts\wireless.xml" SetupComplete.cmd is executed after system setup in a sysprep'd image.

Folder redirection on Windows 7 here, seems so much simpler than messing with profiles all the time! Make sure you're using Access Based Enumeration too.
