Just to add, I think I managed to find out the problem. I made a new GPO and OU for the user in question but this time I didn't set the same proxy address for all protocols, instead I set it manually for all of them except Gopher... this time IE8 and IE9 picked it up. It seems they dropped Gopher support after IE7 or something and setting it using GPOs breaks the entire setting.

I'm trying to apply them using a GPO, yeah. I'll give that a go tomorrow too, it's just odd that it won't do it the "official" way. EDIT: I've just installed 2008R2 and W7 in virtual machines on a test domain and proxy settings aren't being pushed out even on that... I must be doing something stupid here

OK, I made a new OU, created and linked a GPO with our proxy settings in and dropped the user in the new OU. All Windows restrictions were taken off (so we know it's not the old GPO being applied) but the proxy settings from the new GPO were not applied. At this point I can only imagine it is the ADM files, but this is happening on both IE8 and IE9, I'm editing the GPOs on my Windows 7 admin machine at the moment... and we do have a 2008R2 DC. I was thinking of just creating a logon script to set the proxy if this carries on, but I don't really want to reenable registry editing.

There used to be some proxy settings set in the Default Domain policy from back before I got here, but I removed those months ago and these Windows 7 machines have a fresh OS on, so I can't see that being the problem. We're running a mix 2003R2/2008R2 XP/W7 network here. I'm using new GPOs for Windows 7 clients (selected using WMI filters, also confirmed working with GP Results). EDIT: Just found something else. I reenabled the ability to edit proxy information and that isn't even taking effect on the computer... odd.

Hey, I've just been given an issue that I just can't work out! I have some Windows 7 clients on our domain and they aren't applying their proxy settings properly. I push proxy settings out via GPO and I can confirm using GP Results that they're applying on the problem PCs and there isn't anything in the Event Logs... but I can tell just by trying to browse the internet that there are *no* proxy settings set. The users are Standard Users using mandatory profiles (which haven't got any proxy information in them). Any ideas? Thanks

We use Casio XJ-A130s in 4/5 of our classrooms... proven to be very good so far in terms of maintenance... it hasn't really been long enough for us to gauge what state they'll be in later though. The Mitsubishi projectors we used before lasted a good 5 years without a "deep clean", when it did come to deep cleans, they didn't help so we wrote them all off, it was cheaper to replace a projector than to have them refurbished.

I'd agree here also. Do all you can technically to conform to e-Safety and cover yourself, but physically, it's not your job to sit in an IT lab constantly to supervise children. Inform the relevant staff that they shouldn't be in there unsupervised, but draw the line there, if something gets broken, not your fault.

So long as your filters are in place and you can prove you've done the best you can in terms of filtering content, logging what's going on and then documenting anything strange in the log audits, there shouldn't be a problem... There's plenty of stuff our county's filter doesn't catch but our's does, as far as I'm concerned we're pretty safe to let kids use the internet relatively unsupervised, but our kids are primary rather than secondary so they seem less inclined to get around any filters in place.

Usually spend about £500 on staff laptops, seeing as our staff generally look after their laptops and tell me when literally anything goes wrong with them. I got one for £750ish though so I could spec it up to test lab VMs. We're an all Dell place in terms of laptops/workstations apart my laptop (ThinkPads ftw ) and networking gear. Must admit, when our LA gave us a Toshiba laptop to trial I was put right off, their build quality certainly didn't feel as good as they used to be.

Hey, We currently have Netgear managed switches with PoE and I'm looking to install Ubiquiti UniFi access points in our school (replacing our WAG102 APs that seem to be slowly dying...). I have a couple of questions though... 1. Does anyone know if the 3x pack comes with x3 wall mounting brackets? Looking at the product page it looks like it comes with x3 APs, x1 ceiling mount and x1 wall mount. 2. Just to make sure I've not missed anything... I'm intending to power these APs with PoE, am I right in thinking if I install one of these between our switch and the UniFi AP, it'll accept our switch's PoE? Many thanks!

It may not be what you're after, but I just keep them on a wireless connection and do all our maintenance work on them over Christmas and Summer. Build a new image with updates etc, roll it out automatically to them all over a wired connection and bung 'em back in the trolly. You could deploy them automatically using something like Fog or WDS.

Not sure how bad the fact that I'm testing a Win98 version of that same program under Windows 7 today is.

How about Hyper-V in terms of virtualization? I'm not at a large school by any means but it certainly does the job for us!

iTALC has a Logon feature, I'm sure I've used it to logon our batch of 25 netbooks a few times... IIRC it asks for the domain, username and password. They're running XP though so I wouldn't know if it'll work on 7 for you.

I bought my MacBook from the official Apple refurb store and the only thing that set it apart from a brand new one was the fact it wasn't in a shiny white box, it came in a brown one with Apple Refurb written on it. The battery had 0 cycles on it @ 100% health, the case had absolutely no scuffs or scratches etc.

Think ours was done in about 3 - 4 days.

I haven't had the stability problems others have had, but I also installed it with no problems on Thursday TMG on 2008R2 under Hyper-V here.

Ah, handing off clients when overloaded could be an issue... that's partly the reason I wanted to move to something like this.

Thanks for the offer Geoff, I might try and get a demo unit from someone at some point so I can put it to the test in our own environment. Does anyone have any idea when the pro range is going to be released? Also does anyone know of any decent Ubiquity suppliers? We generally go straight to Dell or Insight UK for a lot of our gear...

You could run the MACs through a filter to determine which manufacturer they're from... if you see a load of Apple devices and you don't own any Macs you know to follow that port to it's physical location and take it from there... for example.

My Kindle had no issues with spaces in the SSID.

Hi, I'm currently looking for a wireless solution to replace our current one with. We're only a small school but I'm looking towards the future in terms of scalability as we take on more and more wireless clients. Right now we have x5 Netgear WAP102 APs and are looking to replace them with a managed solution. I was looking at Ubiquity products but was wondering if anyone has had any experience with them? Ruckus kit is far too expensive for our budget. Also, do the Ubiquity APs run off standard PoE? Currently we're powering our APs through our switch's built in PoE. Many thanks
