Hey, We're looking at moving to MS EndPoint security (trying to get away from McAfee ) but I'm pretty confused as to what we actually need. Basically I'm looking to license our Server and Workstation OSs (we don't need any Exchange AV etc.) but from looking at the Microsoft site it seems we'd need to look into System Center Configuration Manager and such or am I getting the wrong impression? Has anyone had any experiences with these and know more about licensing it? I'm not looking for any fancy centralised management (although would be a bonus if it was cheap enough I suppose). Thanks

VirtualBox does it.

I find it's easier just to stick both on one disk and then redirect My Documents etc over to folders on a second disk. It's just the fact programs take up twice as much space then!

Basically, are benefits like the Home Use Program free for the school to "Activate"? We don't want to be slapped with more charges after managing to finally get all our licensing sorted!! Thanks

We stick to fruit So far we only have Apple, Banana and Cherry.

I managed to get the RC running pretty smoothly on a Samsung Q1, 800MHz and 1GB RAM if I remember right.

You nearly got us bang on! ~50 PCs Two servers, one Server 2003 R2 for the curriculum and a seperate linux box for filtering 3 backbone switches Unmanaged Wireless solution We haven't had a 'proper' IT solution before so I'm slowly implementing one, right now we're sorting out netbooks for a class running Windows 7... giving me an excuse to finally get a secondary domain controller on Server 2008 R2 (which I may virtualise), will be moving the admin network to a domain and getting rid of any ancient PCs left over!! Although I don't see the need for a SAN anytime soon

Hey, We are looking into getting a school-wide license agreement and was wondering where people could recommend we get quotes from? We are looking into deploying Windows 7 and Office 2007/2010 as new PCs are being put into place so was looking at the Schools Agreement. Thanks

I haven't been able to get at the switches yet, but I ran Wireshark and when it happens I'm getting results from two different computers, with the broadcast address as the destination. The protocol is NBNS and the Info says "Name query NB M41N.ATH.CX<00>" Any ideas?

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I rebooted them both after managing to get to them and everything seems to be working fine now apart from the pings... When I ping -t the offending switch I can see it slowly rise to nearly 800ms and then back down to around 9ms over about 6 seconds (even did this when I was plugged directly into port 1 on the switch... weird).

Hello, Recently I cannot seem to ping ~ half of our computers (yes they are on! ), which also brings with it the fact they cannot print or access the internet. Now when I'm pinging one of our switches I'm not getting consistent results, one set of pings will give me a 10ms response, while another set will give me upwards of ~400ms whilst pinging another switch will always give me ~4 - 10ms ping every time. Made even harder by the fact that when these were installed the guys didn't bother to label any of the ports Any suggestions?

Nevermind! Forgot to take out one of the default time rules I was playing with!! Blonde moment!

Hey, Could someone with a bit more experience with Dansguardian help us out with allowing a list of sites during specific times? We would like all websites in to be allowed during 12 - 1:35pm Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu and Fri, and Fridays 2 - 4pm but banned all other times ideally. Thanks

D-Link and Linksys do a few IP Cameras that could be the kinda thing you're looking for, most of them just need ethernet/wireless connectivity and power. We have a couple of older D-Link DCS-5300G which can upload pictures when it detects motion via FTP or e-mail. IP camera, wireless internet camera and other network camera solutions from D-Link for example.

Unfortunatly this is how the county set it up before I was there and we have just stuck with it, they setup rules to allow all local traffic so I guess for now it should be ok. Thanks for that one

Hello, I'm still learning a lot about school networks so here goes I'm looking at putting in a proxy server running Dansguardian on but where abouts in the network should it go? It's only a small school so we have ISA server running on the domain controller at the moment and it won't receive loads of traffic for hours on end. Should it just sit on the network somewhere with two connections or sit inbetween ISA and the local network or even something else? Thanks

Hello, We have domain users on Mandatory Profiles set up as Power Users (or whichever one it is that cannot install applications) but I have recently found Google Chrome does not respect this, the children can download and run the installer and then it it installs with no problems... but because of the mandatory profiles the shortcuts to "Internet" break on the desktop and in the Start menu. Any help on stopping this? Right now I have just blocked google.com/chrome and dl.google.com but I am pretty sure other installers will act the same way. Thanks
