I can't really comment on Smoothwall (I've only used the free version, which was fantastic, the schools one is just a lil' expensive for a primary school of our size!) but we've found that Squid/Dansguardian works very well and then whatever slips through that gets caught out by MS Forefront's web filtering.

Why not enable a multiplatform app such as Tapatalk?

I'd seriously suggest contacting them, they're decent guys (unlike a lot of huge companies...) that'd probably be more than happy to help you out. I'd say Debian/Ubuntu is the easiest to get the Minecraft server setup and running on, generally for 20 odd users I'd allocate 4GB RAM to be on the safe side, but you could experiment with that. What was also useful back in the day (I'm not sure it really helps now) was mounting a RAM disk under Linux and having the map stored there instead.

Hey guys, So I'm writing a script to backup our Hyper-V VMs and so far it's all working well, the only problem now is I can't get the RD1000 drive to eject on completion... I can do it under Server 2k3r2 with rsm.exe (apparently) but of course this doesn't exist under Server 2k8r2. I've tried eject programs etc around the web and none of them will eject it, the only way is via the button on the front or Computer > Right clicking the drive > Eject, which isn't particularly friendly. Does anyone have any ideas? Preferably I need to be able to eject it from a bat file. This wouldn't normally be a problem, but I need a non-techie member of staff to be able to swap drives over without logging in Many thanks

Agreed. If you still want to go down the router/AP approach, buy something like a WRT54G router that has DD-WRT compatibility, you can tinker with that to your heart's content.

Sounds like my iPad, I can only get Safari working at work on that, when it comes to the App Store or Apps I have to switch to our unproxied backup ADSL line. Bit ridiculous considering both 'droid and iOS are now being targeted at enterprise environments.

Hey, So, we're deploying Windows 7 here and was wondering how other people had their roaming profiles setup for staff? Ideally we want staff laptops to have a roaming profile (cached at home) with folders redirected to our server for backup etc, but how do you people setup your shares and folder structure on the server for this and which folders would you (not) redirect? Pupils aren't such an issue, we just use mandatory profiles with Docs redirected to their home drive. Thanks

You can still have a physical path through ISA, you just need the appropriate amount of NICs on the virtual host and and for the hypervisor's networking to be setup correctly, this way it'd still act and be as secure as the physical box it was once on.

I heard Microsoft's recommendation nowadays was to move away from Mandatory profiles and to use roaming profiles with a ton of GPO settings applied, which you may as well follow if it's a brand new domain, IMO.

I'd say fair enough not wanting to virtualise a terminal server, but why not points 1, 2 and 4? Realistically, are 100 staff members going to be using Terminal services at any one point in time?

Hey, We finally got some money to install a secondary server at a local primary school and it's working great, we have Hyper-V R2 running a couple of 2008R2 VMs and an Ubuntu proxy server chugging away nicely, but I've hit one snag so far... which is backups. Ideally I would like some software that will take a full host backup (VMs included, the host is running 2008R2 Standard) to the Dell RD1000 drive so the onsite staff can just swap the disks over each week, but does anyone know of any fairly cheap backup software to do this? All of the "top" backup solutions can cost £100s - £1000s which we simply don't have. I've looked into using Windows Server Backup but it doesn't support the RD1000 drive. Being able to automatically eject the drive every Friday at a certain time would be a bonus too! I've seen Hyperoo but I'm not sure on how good a product it really is... no one seems to know much about it Many thanks

I guess they would get cached in our proxy server on download but ideally we would have an offline installer for those quick laptop rebuilds we have to do! I've not had any problems with WD or Samsung... Maxtor were always rubbish and Seagate have been rubbish in the past 4 years or so in my experience.

So what happens at the end of the child's time at the particular school? I assume the school hands over ownership of the device to the parents?

I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 under Hyper-V R2 for our pupil's proxy and it works fine out of the box, but you have to use the legacy network adapter when setting up the VM and once in Ubuntu you might need to enable some kernel modules: Installing Ubuntu Server 10.10 on Hyper-V - Virtual PC Guy&#39s WebLog - Site Home - MSDN Blogs It's for 10.10 but it worked on 11.04 for me, the trickier bit was setting up the system to use our ISA proxy! I realise you said Debian, but the process might be fairly similar or you might get away with using Ubuntu seeing as it's based on Debian etc.

Hi, So we have an issue where parts of our GPOs aren't applying because the mandatory profiles have various things set in the registry, a prime example being our proxy settings, where the registry is being applied over the GPO. I've ended up rebuilding one profile to fix this but is there any other (easier) method? Thanks

Hey, I was just wondering how you guys set out your network manuals? I've given myself the task of writing out a manual/reference to how our network is laid out, set up, what's currently going on and how to do something like checking proxy logs or unblocking a website in case I leave. Everytime I start writing it I decide that it's not laid out properly and give up and now I've decided I must do it So, any pointers? Perhaps someone could post up an example or one of their manuals? Sort of off topic I know, but I'm surprised you guys are still carrying on with Mac servers, considering the discontinuation of Xserve... it doesn't seem like Apple is really into the enterprise/educational thing anymore. Although, this is coming from someone who has never even touched OS X Server!

Another one is on Dell monitors, holding Menu and the + button whilst turning the monitor on enters a service menu. Not sure what's different about it other than showing you the panel type etc though...

Second these, we have four installed in our primary school and they've been fantastic so far, but as said they're discontinued for the 'fatter' models.
