I would seriously consider your decision to host externally. If you host it externaly you're going to find it difficult to control the back-end of Moodle, perform upgrades, set up ldap authentication an easily/quickly make theme modifications and upload resources.

If you've been using XP in an tech admin role for a while then it will be the easiest of all the MCP exams for you. Good luck

I'm not sure this is correct. ....but I also don't fully unerstand the question either, and wonder if it OP is correct in saying there are 4GC's on site! It sounds quite overkill for a school enviroment. I'm also thinking that if there have been historically 4GC's they will probably already be listed in Exchange anyway?

Thanks to everyone who took the time to reply to this (and the detail many of you have gone in to). It's fantastic information I can take forward. For those who don't know (I did summarise in a previous post), I will be undertaking a quasi-consultant role within a new build project which is following BSF standards, but more importantly - not following BSF ICT! Our ICT procurement route is as yet undecided, although we may well follow a framework model taken by a neighbouring LA in which would work develop and ICT partnership with a well known provider (I won’t name them just yet, but it’s safe to say it’s one I’d never turn to usually, but early discussions have promised a massive amount of freedom and collaboration possibilities) One of the first things I’ll be doing is developing the ICT vision – which perhaps unusually, I am being asked to draft and then tweak following consultation. After that it will be working on the ICT brief and asking similar questions to the ones I did in this thread with Heads of Department, Students and the wider community. If anyone else has anything to offer (anything at all now that the thread is in Blue Skies!) then feel free.

My post wasnt really due to load actually. I'm sure it would cope fine along those lines. The main reasons I wouldn't be keen are that SIMS would ideally be on a completely secure system, isn't (in my experience) as reliable as Exchange and requires frequent updates, shutdown/resets etc. From your projections I'm guessing this is a very small school? If that was the case I'd seriously consider 2 servers instead of one. However, others on here are very hot on virtualisation (which I have no where near enough knowledge on - but looks promising). It might be that 1 server and 2 virtual servers is a compromise?

If you go to Whois.net and type in your domain name it will tell you who owns it. If it is schoolname.localauthority.sch.uk then it will most likely be the local authority provider that registered it for you and the people who need to register a sub domain and sort out the public IP addressing for you.

Who ownes your school domain name? If it's your broadband provider (YGFL did you say?) then you'd get in touch with them and ask them to create a subdomain (mail.domainname.com). They would also need to give you a public IP address linked to the domain which then links to the private IP address of your Exchange server

Hi Leco, Is OWA already working within the network (i.e. can you log on to a station and browse to http://servername/exchange and login?) and simply asking how to access outside? Or, do you not use OWA inside either, and want to know how to set it up from scratch?

MS Licensing, especially in schools, is something which people often go different routes on. The main advantage to doing the schools agreement is the fact that (as long as you to the desktop cal + core cal) you have continual upgrade rights to move to new versions of office and windows as soon as they come available. It's also potentially much easiler to manage than seperate OEM licenses. A non-schools agreement solution might be fine for year 1 2 or 3, but when the time comes to want to upgrade to a new version of office and then a new version of windows, you might well find you're due to pay much more than what you would have by subscribing.

There's supposedly an x32 version for testing/training, but agree about deployment - I think it's entirely suitable to ensure it's on x64 only. Having read a lot of info and watched a couple of vids this product looks fantastic! So much more on offer than 2007 (speaking as a 2003 user/cert!). Proper unified messaging and by the sounds of it, far easiler licensing - particulaly for schools!

I'm not sure how much use / interest this one would get from others.... but I'd definately use it - so thought i'd list it! How about an EduGeek iPhone app? The app could either be free or paid for (I actually think, despite already "supporting" i'd pay for the app if it was feature-rich enough!). I came up with this the other night when I spent an hour or so on EduGeek using both the iPhone layout and the normal www (out of the two I actualy prefer the www one and wish the info bar to switch to iPhone mode would go away!) I'd like to see the following features: Loosly based on the Facebook App Home screen to show list of recent messages like the www site. Facility to press/click on threads and view discussions etc. Show online users, facility to PM and view profile etc Search posts Create threads Create blogs

I wish I'd caught this sooner... If i've understood correctly you have nothing to worry about. The only slightly messy part is that you have created a new user which may have also created a second (new) mailbox... but you can reply back if that is a problem. If you have litterally just deleted the user in AD and the mailbox shows up in System Manager you have 30days to correct it before it's removed. Simply create a new user (if you do this via AD on the Exchange box don't allow it to auto create a mailbox), then go in to system manager, find the mailbox, right-click and choose reconnect. You may well win the race... I've just looked over the min spec at Exchange 2010 System Requirements - sadly my home computer won't be up to it (unless I can lay my hands on the x32 version somehow!)

If you have a PC running an OEM version of XP then you won't be able to simply change the key to a volume license key. You will need to perform an OS upgrade using a volume license disk provided as part of your agreement (I'm assuming Schools Agreement?) If you don't have original media but still have an active contract you should be able to log on to the Microsoft Volume Licensing website (http://licensing.microsoft.com) and download iso versions of disk for you to use etc. If you are new to the role there you will need to obtain the Microsoft Enrollement number and Account Number (I think those are the two... i could be wrong) to gain access to the MSVLS site and access your agreement.... or speak with the person who is already registered on the site and ask them to create a username for you. Hi Fatp, Your likely scenario is that you'll be involved in TUPE. If you give that a search on here there are loads of posts. A lot of posts are quite negative about the TUPE process, but some speak warmly of it - essentially it gives some people much more scope and routes for progression. If you were TUPE'd you would have the same working conditions and pay etc, you'd just be working for Redstone!
