    We do. It's run / managed via the behaviour management part of SIMS. I don't know much more than that, but if you PM me I can put you in touch with the teacher (who also happens to be an IT teacher!) who is coordinating it.

    Most places will have a policy of not allowing anything untested (by their PAT tester / outsource company) at all. Others will say it's ok for items up to 12months old (....and then theres others that will just turn a blind eye alltogether!)

    So when you say it won't open, what does it do? Litterally nothing (no hour glass, no error message etc) or is there a message displayed?

    [doh]! Hmm. And you've definately loaded on the Launch Manager (under Tools and Utilities)? If it's anything software related it's likely to be that.

    SIMS and Vista

    What version of SIMS are you using? I was curious, so went away to install it on my office PC (which i've just reimaged recently - Vista Business etc!). Went in without any problem at all! Actually, I say no problem at all, I still can't open System Manager which is quite annoying (but overcomable for me as I have two other computers next to me!)

    1 - Very little. If anything, then possibly the trainee is still learning - maybe on an NVQ course etc. Junior might be the same level of person who gets taken on full time 2 - Depends. It's all about ability really. You might have the natural ability of someone who's had to knuckle down and learn it from scratch for years. 3 - Kind of the same as above. Generally, if you can do your work everyday without having to ask for direction or guidence, that's pretty much the telling point.

    Is the Vista client a member of the domain? Is the user logging on a user which has permission to access S: ?

    There would have probably been some third party software controlling the function keys. We've had that with some Samsungs we've had recently. It might also be worth logging on as local administrator and then trying the function key and seeing if it works then? (We've also had it where function keys couldn't be used until someone logged on etc!)

    Is the file correctly associated with Excel?

    I'm not sure I'd want to virtualise the CA, but i'm not too experienced on virtualisation (unfortunately), so maybe others will say there is nothing wrong with it. As long as the FSMO roles are assigned to active servers you shouldn't have a problem. Having the CA on the DC shouldn't cause an issue - it's just one of those pieces of advice that sometimes (often) get ignored in the real world.

    I'm sure it's something simple being overlooked (if the kids leave me alone over lunch time I might be able to think!) Are there any errors in the event log about replication or dns?

    If you need the data ASAP Spiceworks is probably the easiest as there is no client-side configuration needed. Quite amazing the way it works. A side note (not as ar$ey as it probably sounds!) would be that a properly managed network should be restricted to allow only authorised application installs. Normally a 'Network Manager' (or similar person) would be responsible for keeping license records.... I.E the IT team should be able to accurately say what is running on their network without having to go out and scan.

    What's your LP? Moodle? If its running locally try restarting IIS Services on the server it's installed on. We occasionally get HTTP 500 errors (for no reason that we can find) and only a restart of IIS cures it.

    It's likely that US schools operate the same restrictions as us (maybe even tighter in some instances!)

    It's not that bad... If I was wanting to transmit heavily confidential data I wouldn't rely on it alone, but as a simple prevention for most people it's fine?

    Click on the Office Button at the top of the page. Click Save as. On the Save as Pop-up window, click 'Tools' then scroll down to General options (on the bottom right) and choose a password. Choose a password for opening a document. Choose a password for modifying a document.

    We have license (which I can't think the name of at the min) which allows films to be shown in an education enviroment - however, even this only applies when the film is being shown for some educational purpose! ....so you can imagine how unpopular I was when I pointed out to the staff that end of term videos should not be screened as they are for entertainment, not education! (Luckily the SMT at the time backed me up!)

    It sounds like you need VLC player in your life! We've been using it for the last couple of years - never looked back

    Create a new OU and place the 6th form pc's in there. Then create a new group policy with the new IE proxy settings and link it to that OU.
