They've been governor for quite a while, although I've only ever exchanged brief conversations in the past. The email was what i'd call "efficiant". It was lengthly, they'd obviously put time and effort in to it, but there was a lot of critique! After posting this last night I prepared an equally lengthly reply explaining or answering their points/questions, but also thanking them for showing Governor support etc! (Although I'm chickening out partly and letting the Head cast their eye over my reply before I hit send! Im not altogether sure the Head will be pleased at the direct contact in all honesty!)

I've been trying (and constantly failing) to stop checking work emails at night! Everytime I check, there seems to be something I didn't really want to see! Tonight my iPhone goes "ping" at about 8.30pm, and I have several pages of email from a Governor. I decide to switch to my PC so I can read it more easily, and find that several items on our current AUP (which incidentally has Governor approval for a re-write, so they know I'm working on revsions!) has been queried! I'm not sure whether to be happy that a link governor is interested enough to query parts of it, or unhappy that they're picking at the scraps of a (almost) defunct document!

Hi All, I wonder if anyone out there can advise me! I consider myself to be "quite good" when it comes to Microsoft Licensing, but this one has got me a bit confused and I can't find an answer! We have a Microsoft Schools Agreement for 300 desktop CALs and about 9 servers. I've been sucessfully testing Terminal Services so that our staff (and maybe Students) could log on via TSWeb or the actual remote desktop application. Everything works fine and I'm in the position to move forward with the project. However, I need to make sure we're licensed! When you install TS you get asked for per device or per user licensing.... From reading I've assumed that user licensing would be the best (as users will be logging on out of school etc?) My questions are: 1) Is my theory on licensing per user the correct one? 2) Do I already have a collection of TS licenses as part of the Schools Agreement (i.e. maybe covered in the desktop CAL?) 3) An indication of any licensing costs would be good! Cheers!

I can add a +10 for Stone. I've used them at my secondary school for the last 2-3 years. All stations very high quality, 5yr on-site next business day warranty (which we've not used a great deal of, but when it has been needed it's been excellent) I've used them in a couple of our Primary Schools too. How do you do your licensing? Are you part of the Microsoft Schools Agreement, or Select, or just manage original OEM licenses?

I'm sure lots of people will jump at it, but I'm still not sure the OP needs it. It sounds scary, but really honestly isn't! A good read-up on Google and Technet (and probably on here too) and they'll be good to go! We did our network a couple of years ago now and the actual process itself isn't a huge one at all - less than a day from start to finish (obviously this might depend on number of servers and location etc) I'd say probably one more for Exchange if it's a single server etc

Is this a single 2000 domain that you want to upgrade to 2003? Are you sure you really need to go to the expense of a contractor? I'm sure you'll be able to get someone to do it for you, but you really don't need to - google the process and ensure you have decent backups (just in case)

Yeah, we have different OU's for staff and students where these settings are saved. In the Group Policy console, expand the User Configuration, Windows Settings, and Folder Redirection nodes. All of the places you can redirect will be under there.

Lol, glad I was able to help by over-answering! On the \\server\username share we allow "everybody" full access, not other permissions than that on the share. On the security permissions we have Administrators Full, Supervisors (which is our own low-admin group) Full, and that specific username (07jbloggs) also Full.

Slightly different than all above... Server > E$ > Users > Staff > Useraname Server > E$ > Users > Students > Intake Year > Username E$ is a partition entirely for user areas which runs disk quota on it. All individual user areas shared so accessible via \\server\username Then, (technically not what you asked, but still kind of file structure), we have Folder redirection in place which redirects: Desktop: \\server\desktops\staff and \\server\desktops\students My Documents (and all sub folders like my pics etc): \\server\%username% App Data: \\server\%username%\AppData Start Menu: \\server\desktops\staff ands \\server\desktops\students (we used to operate seperate menus, but figured as we want the same shortcuts as available on the desktop we might as well just maintain the one area!

Oh the other app I use is OpenSSH for wireless file transfer - a must for pretty much anything, but mainly ringtones for me! (....my current one is the theme tune to the IT Crowd! Makes me smile everytime someone rings!)

Quite an old post, but as no one has replied I thought I would! Winterboard is a must, and the others I make regular use out of are Facebook, Cycorder and Shazam. The other top app I have on there but don't find much use for is MxTube - very quick and high quality! What ones do you have?

Hey Superfletch! I bet it's a primary isn't it! Do you know what the SMS software is as well as the AV? If it's a school with more than one server I'd question the logic at having this software on the SIMS server in any case? It probably comes down to the age old problem (down here especially)... the HT wants something done, doesn't understand the technical issues (and/or doesn't care about them) and expects the order to be done as that's what he's been told works!

That's kind of what I was getting at above. The downside of Word 2007 passwording is the fact there are multiple programs out there (if someone searched hard enough) that would bypass or reset passwords so that they could gain access

I've never played with it on 2008, but i've just been playing with it this afternoon on 2003. It might be that the user you wish to log on isn't a member of the Remote Desktop local group on the server with remote desktop installed. That got me confused for a while!

Out of interest, what LP is it, and who's hosting it?

I'd missed the external bit when making my previous posts! It's technically still possible to get LDAP authentication via an external site, but you would have to have a very good relationship with the hosting company! If it's an LEA hosted site (i.e. by your schools ISP) then it might well be still possible with some Firewall changes at both ends to allow that kind of traffic. I'm not sure I'd want to go down that avenue myself.

If your talking about a locally hosted LP like Moodle, then it's possible yes. Use LDAP and Windows Authentication via IIS (if you go down the MS route instead of Linux - if it's Linux I can't help - can't use it!!)

If they're accessing externally (via their home computer etc) then they'll have to log in and authenticate somehow. In school you can get around it as you know they're accessing via station and know they're logged on as themselves. Outside the only way of authenticating would be via typing a username and password of via VPN etc (which obviously would still require some for of login!)

In my place we're conducting a survey with pupils thoughts on it (as it's reasonably new to us) At the moment it's looking like the general feeling is that the system benefits the ones who are normally disruptive! (The thinking being that teachers don't always award merits to the ones that work well constantly as they'd be doing it every lesson, and only issue merrits to the pupils who are usually less well behaved etc)

I'd assume IT Practitioner? (That's what my previous Techs have done)
