When you say "profile" do you mean the pupil's own mental profile, or their network user profile?! If you mean network, what kind of specific things are they wanting to capture? It sound like they've given you a rather broad statement without explaining very well!

Hi All, Interesting question coming... (not sure if this should be here or blue skies techically!) Does anyone out there offer true Unified Communication? If so, how? What software do you run? What hardware do you support? I like the sound of Exchange 2010 and also Communications Server, but would be interested in hearing from anyone with experience of something else?

I can't believe there isn't anything on the market but I've done extensive searches and can't find anything! I've considered a wireless camera (something sold as a "spy cam"!) which would do the job reasonably well. If no one comes back with a link to something similar over the next few days I'll buy it / make it all work and post the links and info here!

Hi All, Does anyone know of a product on the market which could be described as a cross between a mini-visualiser and a pencam?! Essentially, I'd like to find a way of allowing a teacher to wander around the classroom, suddenly spot a great bit of work and point his pencam at the pupil's work so that it will display back on his computer/ interactive whiteboard! If anyone has seen the gadget they use on Countdown for zooming in to words in the dictionary, thats the kind of thing I'd like!

It's venturing a little bit off-topic, but does that card record from Sky? I have been playing with Windows 7 Media Centre and want to buy a tuner card that I could hook up to Sky (if that's at all possible!?) but know next to nothing about this side of things!

Still delighted with the RC of Win 7 however.... less than impressed with Norton! Well... I didn't spend much time using the build 7000 release as it was a bit clunky and clumsy for me, so was not holding much hope for 7100.... WOW was I wrong. I actually decided to perform an upgrade from Vista Business on my home machine and WHAT A DIFFERENCE! This machine has a new lease of life! No more lagging from application to application, no more typing faster than the computer can process (that's half a brag and half the slowness of my machine!) I can't remember the last time I've been this excited about something IT related!!

I've not used the ones you linked, but i've used these - Extra Value 85Mbps Powerline Homeplug Adapter - Twin Pack - Ebuyer - They are fantastic. You really wouldn't know the difference between CAt5/6 or these. I can sit anywhere in my house that has one of these and get 6 or 7meg comfortably (I only ever get up to 7meg in to my house!)

Do you mean the effects in the Picture Styles group (on the Format Ribbon when clicking on a picture?) You should be able to apply those to any picture regardless of whether it's an inserted jpg, clip art or a screenshot. (Just tested to make sure i'm not lying to you!)

Sods law - I've figured it out! (Took me days to get round to posting a message and resolved it just after posting!) In case anyone reads this in the future and is curious... The issue was that we use Altiris Deployment Solution on one of our networks. The stations affected were running a task via Altris that hadn't quite finished at the point the user shut the PC down. This meant that the tast was still running at the stage of sending a Wake-on-lan signal to the client. It's slightly odd, but the way Altiris seems to work is that if the task doesn't finish, or the client can't communicate with the server, the client agent actually remembers the last server command... So although Wake on LAN had been disabled in BIOS the computers Altris Client software remembered it needed a Wake on LAN event. I'm not sure it's meant to work like this, but suddenly remembered something similar about 4years ago and went to look! Doh!

This has been confusing me for days now... I have a handful of computers that will shut down and power off..... but then turn themselves back on within a few minutes! To confuse me even more, the computers are different makes, have different componants, have different PSU's, and different network cards! There is nothing obvious in event logs. It is definately not wake on lan.... We DO use it here, but for purposes of elimination have disabled it in BIOS on these machines yet the issue still exists! Does anyone have any ideas!?

That might be the recommendation but in reality it works over much more than 5m. I've had about 30m in a hall, probably about the same (maybe a little longer) at home - all worked no problems. The only thing that might be worth adding is that although my case was for a keyboard, it was for odd key presses, not for typing. It might lag a little of a distance like that, but not sure.

What's to hate about it? It provides a use for old equipment, provides a secure enviroment off your network, gives a real-life / hands on perspective for the child and means you don't have to go to the trouble of installing vmware on your classroom pc's and create an image!?

Is this for their ICT course that they need to evidence etc? Could you not set up an old laptop or computer off the network for them to do it on?

As much as I dislike RM and their badged products, I'm curious what "can't be done" on the CC3 system? What is it they are wanting to do?

I've done it before in my days as a technician - built about 17 too. The computers were fine, but it's the niggly things that bug you afterwards. If a componant goes down then you have to spend time and energy diagnosing and gettin in touch with the manafacturer (if you buy 17 identical componants you stand a chance of maybe getting a bad batch - i did on hard drives - really sucked!). I thought long and hard about doing this again one summer for a batch of 45 but decided against it with my new managerial hat on. The fact that I can buy a batch that have been custom built, tested, and come with a 5yr next day on-site business warranty for the same money or even less than what I could build them for was a no-brainer! My advice..... don't do it!

I think you're legally obliged to do it aren't you? I know you're employer has a legal responsibility to allow you the time off (not sure if it's paid time off though!)

The PR side of it is to get old cars off the road and help the enviroment. The realistic side of it is that they need to get the car industry moving again, so they're following the same stimulus that other EU counteries have introduced!

Thanks for taking the time to consider and reply Dos_Box! (But at 05:11 on a Sunday morning?! ) I'd sum your post up as a positive one, but also a fairly clear indication the facility I'm suggesting won't be added to the site any time soon... As the creator/owner of this wonderful place I think I/we have to perhaps accept the "this isn't a route I would ever like to see us go down" comment. Although I standby the comments I've made about the positives the new facility might bring, it clearly doesn't fit with your overall vision for the site, which again is something we should probably respect. Another thought did occur to me last night (I think this is someting someone did touch on earlier, or perhaps it was in the other thread). Maybe if there are a decent number of us who did still want the facility, perhaps we could just make use of the existing "groups" facility and manually manage the admin / group membership ourselves? To link in with the comments above, I think I would prefer for you to comment on that before anything was created though. If it's the concept itself (in any technical form) that you disagree with then it would be inappropriate for us to use your site against your wishes.

I guess this would be open to discussion / vote too. Personally, I'd say yes as they fall in to my completely made up category of "company or school worker"! I know some other members might want to extend my original suggestion to exclude LA workers too, and use the feature as a more full-on + secure "Behind the red door" kind of section, but that’s something completely different to what I was suggesting (and something I wouldn't take part in myself). I happen to know at least one (and I suspect more!) of my LA exist on here. We've actually posted on each other’s threads before and know who each other are. As this is a public medium it's down to individuals to choose how to represent themselves, but my choice is to represent myself in the same way I would at work. At work if I have something negative to say I will say it (as long as it is still constructive in some way), and that's what I do here. Andrew_C's "not in front of the children" approach summarises my idea quite well. I have no problem with anyone reading the general content of my posts, but sometimes (if the facility was there) I might like to include more specific explanations, localised information or even geographical offers of help etc.

Now there's a thought.... Even as a current supporter/donator I'd quite happily part with more ££'s if it was a way of having the facility. Of course, on the other hand, if it was only ever used by 2% of the total EduGeek population it would probably defeat the object! Maybe we should find out 1) If it is theoretically/technically possible and 2) just how many people would be willing to pay?
