I partly disagree to some of the suggestions so far... Go in open-minded, but if something is clearly not right, and you know a better way then make sure people know you're not afraid to make changes (just be prepared to qualify them if/when asked - and make sure teaching and learning as at the centre of all decisions!) If the previous NM left on bad terms I'd be tempted to check out basics security at least and change passwords on admin accounts, switches, etc etc

Have you tried running setup as administraor (as in right click, run as admin)? I've never come across a problem installing it before.

Thanks to everyone who replied. Very interesting to see what others are doing! Unfortunately our current old school is so tight on space there isn't even a cleaning cupboard with available space in it to put a laptop! It sounds like this wouldn't be a totally "out-there" thing to look in to though. Cheers

I suppose this depends per the individual in the scenario. Most of the time I have three people below me available for that kind of reactive support - in theory I'm meant to be hands-off (although I've taken it upon myself to just go with the busy times until the summer!)

Joedude - many schools DO prevent the use of CD/DVD/USB and have much more reliable filters in place - if your school doesn't have that added security you probably feel very fortunate and very clever... Unfortunately for you, there'll come a time when you look at your GCSE results print out and see just how far inappropriate use of ICT managed to get you.... When your grades can't even get you an entry-level job in IT (or anything else) you'll be kicking yourself. Your enthusiasm for IT could be put to much better use - you can get your Flash + Java game fix at home!

Hi All, Here's a quick one for you... How many School-Based IT Support Staff / Managers work from home? Is it something anyone has ever done / does sometimes / does often? I ask, as I have found it increasingly difficult to actually get any real work done! I have web design, policy re-writes, vision-writing and quotes coming out of my ears but get interupted with password changes and sales calls while my other staff are out on calls etc (I know.... partly my fault for not inforcing FITS / ITIL!) I came home at 4pm today and actually got more done in an hour than I did all day! I could easily configure my office phone to forward to my home phone, I can TS in to work and then use internal VNC tools if needed, I have email.... so the only thing to get over is the fact that those less familiar with IT might just assume I'm staying at home to top up a tan! I'd be interested to hear people's opinions (not just based on if I should - more along the lines of if "we" should?!)

Do you know which server runs as the GC? If you do (I'd hope you do in a network enviroment!) then just check it's working. If you need to find out: Log on to Exchange Server Open System Manager Expand the tree to Administrative Groups > First Administrative Group > Servers > The name of the server your on. Right click on that server name, go to Directory Access and you will a list of servers. In the "type" column you'll see one or more is listed as a GC. For Exchange to function it needs constant access to the GC - it can survive without DC access for a while but not GC

And that the Global Catalogue server is contactable from it...

I would base my figure on a number of things - travel costs (if any), litterally how hard the works going to be, and the fact that you need to be paid more than your current hourly rate to compensate for working during a day's leave! (It's only fair). I've done one-off full days (technically a bit more than a "day" as I worked until about 7pm then!) for £500 - that was a pretty weird request - kind of network constultancy / redesign. I'd say definately 250-500 for the day. You'll probably still come in cheaper than them going to someone else.
