  1. A Cluster of Geeks
  2. Yep - that sounds like the same meeting. Get him to contact me regarding both and he can go in with the bids from the Durham schools to help drive the costs down for everybody. We have Smoothwall and probably will purchase Impero - if he wants to call over sometime to see our Smoothwall setup he's more than welcome.
  3. I invited a representative from Impero to our Durham Network Managers meeting today. Demo of the product looked good and he mentioned an average of £5 per machine. We are hopefully looking to but a bid together a if a few Durham schools are interested to bring the cost down. Annual support is generally 30% of the capital purchase.
  4. Not looked around for solutions yet - to do exactly what we need we may need to put something together inhouse.
  5. We have Skype running with very minor tweaks although this may just be for authenticated users. I'll try and remember to check.
  6. I dropped in a lot of buzz words - just to make it sound good and give us a counter argument if we have parents / staff against it. --------- As a school we can’t hide from the fact that sites such as FaceBook are available to our students on the internet, if used responsibly these are fantastic tools to use to assist with communication channels and further increasing the public image of the school nationally and worldwide. Allowing us to link to content hosted on our school site bringing more visitors on a daily basis to view the content we wish to share. We currently get a lot of hits to our school website via Facebook of new and repeat visitors. Students will use sites such as FaceBook whether as a school we choose to promote it or not, if we are shown to utilise sites such as FaceBook I believe it will show to our students that it is not just a toy or gimmick and that professionally this has its benefits. This also reminds students that these pages are public and include people who may not necessarily be in their friendship network, encouraging them to look at issues around permissions and sharing personal information. Students will not read the schools newsletter or actively search the schools website for information, but they will generally use FaceBook several times per week if not daily and the schools information will be served to them via their FaceBook home page. Providing an official St. Bede’s School page allows us to post and moderate the messages we want to give via St. Bede’s School. There is an unofficial St. Bede’s page that has been setup by a former student that we are unable to remove that may contain material that we do wish to be associated with ourselves. Advertising the official page on our website allows us to distance ourselves from the above mentioned site. At the moment we are one of a few schools who utilise the tools such as FaceBook or Twitter, but I see it being a growing trend that more schools will follow suit especially further into the 21st Century. Fantastic form of communication with: Present Students Former Students Parents Outside World
  7. We have facebook and we have found a succefful tool for communication with all stake holders. We have nearly 2,000 members on our page. I put a document together as to the pro's and con's - I'll try and dig it out.
  8. 1450 students, 140 staff 1 x Network Manager 1 x ICT Technician
  9. For those with an iphone you can get the following science app free for the next week or so. They look like they are bringing more subjects out in the future. rAPPidRevise
  10. For those with an iphone you can get the following science app free for the next week or so. They look like they are bringing more subjects out in the future. rAPPidRevise
  11. Which is the older version? Do you have a release number? I'll check my HD's to see if I still have it.
  12. Good stuff cheers.
  13. Another great year for Edugeek at BETT. Congratulations to all of you sticking it out for the 4 days and even longer for those of you at LWF beforehand. Great to catch up with a lot of people from the site and hopefully the next time we cross will be at the next Edugeek conference (that is if theres one taking place this year). Thanks again!
  14. I wan't to cause some mischief Is it possible using a Smoothwall box when some types a webpage it forwards to an alternative address? E.g. Sunderland | Home > Newcastle United | Home Cheers Andrew
  15. Students write homework in their paper planner. But hoping to find a better 'IT' replacement soon.
  16. AUP Informant — Paul Beesley
  17. I slipstreamed the SP3 into our builds so when the PC's boot into Windows XP they are SP3 ready and just awaiting packages. Saves a little extra time when rebuilding the computers. Good luck trying to crack the Lexia problem. Lexia ran on our SP2 machines fine and continues to run on SP3 now.
  18. We don't use it but Impero offers the securus keyword logging as well as a lot more. Not sure of costs Impero - Complete Lab Management Solution
  19. We don't use the Edugeek package, but we will move our live site to a test box next week to test the upgrade first. Don't really want it to break our template or any of the addons we use on our live site.
  20. If you do a search on the site theirs quite a few to choose from - a free one from a member on here I seem to remember. The above two recommendations generally seem to be the most popular free helpdesk's members recommend.
  21. I don't think it will help especially if you have tried to run as a clean machine but here you go. I don't have the Durham LA package but one I created myself. Have you tried a manual install? The other option could be do you use a proxy? After the splash screen I think it dials out to the lexia website. 22. I'm from Durham and have a CC3 network. And i've never had a problem with Lexia. Drop me a PM with your e-mail and I'll happily share a package .ini file. Although I don't think this will show anything out of the ordinary. What error are you receiving exactly? Anything in the event viewer etc?
  23. Yeah, it appears to be incomplete and rushed unfortunately. It had a great opportunity to be a useful tool for all visitors.
  24. Yours looks nothing like you - I don't remember you having Ginger hair!
