Yes, we have a self hosted SLG. We couldn't risk our internet connection going down and staff not being able to carry out their registers etc.

Most if not all will probably do the majority of your shopping list. Your probably going to be best inviting vendors in to give you demonstrations of their products to allow you to see what they can / can't do and associated costs. Visiting other neighbouring schools could also be an option. If I am totally honest you will probably need to combine around 5 or 6 of the VLE's on the market today to get the perfect system to suit all of your needs. Take a look at Frog, TALMOS, Moodle etc.

We had Zimbra for our student users but migrated to Live@Edu this year, and the students seem to prefer it. Will also consider Live@Edu or Microsoft 365 for our staff users over the summer.

controlling printing by password
Sylv3r replied to mercer77's topic in Network and Classroom Management
I guess you could also pause the printer and just delete the jobs you don't want printed and unpause - pause when necessary. -
We are going through the process next week of interviewing 3 finance software vendors, CAPITA FMS, Sage and Aggresso. I'll come up with some questions for the interviews, but I would be interested if you have any ideas or have gone through a similar process and already have some questions to hand. Thanks

We use both SLG and emerge here. All staff use SLG to undertake the registers, profiles, assessment etc and we purchased 5 x iPOD touches for our PE staff as an incentive for them to do their registers. We also use them for various other stuff including to allow them to check their e-mails etc as they are not at PC's as much as the rest of the school.

Music are probably our most needy department here and Cubase seems to be the biggest issue. All student data is saved to our SAN and is part of our main school network. The machines aren't that high of spec, but do the job and we use these to interface between or midi keyboards and PC's. Product: US-144MKII | TASCAM

I'm interested what sort of damage you have come across up to now. We are starting to use them across the school and I am a bit concerned with the way we store / transport them about as well as them being dropped on the hard floors in the PE Gyms etc.

How do you keep in contact with your students' parents?
Sylv3r replied to GREED's topic in MIS Systems
e-mail, SIMS Learning Gateway, paper letter, twitter and facebook. -
When we've seen this in the past either a firmware upgrade or try and move the mains power cable as far away from the board as possible - we had a couple of installs where the transformer was actually behind the board which caused spiking.

I'm heading off to edingburgh this weekend for a mates stag do, with a spot of Go Karting, we've done quad biking and paintballing before in the past as well.

Turning off projectors during breaks and lunchtimes...
Sylv3r replied to Little-Miss's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
The problem that we find with this and we have it setup here is that the projectors on freeze or blank screen don't switch off even after no signal. -
Should a school have a Facebook page, the risks and benefits??
Sylv3r replied to roneill631's topic in General Chat
We have an official page with over 1,670 likes. It's used for posting school news, reminders, achievements etc. As people have posted above, I created the page because if I hadn't someone else would have done. It's moderated as best as we can, and although open to abuse up to now we've been OK. Looking at the admin stats, it's actually interesting that the majority of our hits 80% are from people older than 18, so is most likely be ex-students or parents logging on. We haven't really pushed it with students, but we do occasionally mention it in our parents newsletters. I don't really want to post our details on here publically, but I am willing to share the link if people PM me, if your looking for examples. -
Couldn't agree more with this statement.

Turning off projectors during breaks and lunchtimes...
Sylv3r replied to Little-Miss's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
One step at a time for us here.... i'd be happy if they turned the off on a night never mind during the day. We've set them all to autoswitch off, but if the staff use the no show or freeze option it seems to be overridden. More often than not, during a half term break when I do a walk around the school I can enter a classroom and hear the fans of the projector running generally on the Thursday or Friday after being left on from the following week. -
[sims] Hardware requirements/recommendations for Solus3
Sylv3r replied to Mcshammer_dj's topic in MIS Systems
We installed it onto our SIMS Server, which I would imagine is overspecced and not essential for SOLUS. Other than copying the files to the local hard drives of the machines, I can't see it needing to be that memory intensive or requiring too much power to install. -
Sorry I meant send me a PM with your e-mail.
-
Send me a PM and i'll send you one of our templates. I don't see why you can't use the same template for the whole school but it will be difficult to manage. We use a template for each year group here as the covering letter which we include is always different.

Is this the CAPITA hosted SLG I take it? Our locally hosted SLG works fine with the latest Smoothwall updates installed.

I originally installed it on our our SIMS server as I thought I had read somewhere that you could schedule it to perform a send / receive every 'x' minutes although this didn't seem to work for us, so I have since installed it on two additional workstations. Our Exams Officer and Assistant Head i/c of Exams so they can manually run it if needs be to check / send any files. All use the examsin / examsout folder on a mapped drive.

I don't think Schoolcomms currently does this, but is certainly something it will do in the next month or two.

It's just a normal Sky+ box and you'll need some additional hardware to get the recordings or a TV tuner should do the job. Something a bit like this: How do I copy recordings from a Sky+ box? | TV and Tech UK
