I've been "outsourced" a number of time, outsourcing is another way of saying you're going to get screwed. Nothing good will come of this. We need to nip this in the bud NOW! The problem is this, as we're not teachers, we're considered 2nd class citizens... ok I can live with that (a little), but why does no-one ever say "lets outsource the admin staff, or the lab techs"? I'll tell you why... because we're not as appreciated as lab techs or admin staff or caretaker, because we're the new kids on the block, and because we are seen to spend a lot of money. I can't stand to be sold off to the lowest bidder again, I think I'm going to hide on a desert island!

Remotely Shutdown/Restart PC's at night
StewartKnight replied to flyinghaggis's topic in How do you do....it?
I like the computer to be on overnight, because Sophos does a scan at 2am. I use "shadow volume" now, so that all files are "backed up", and if the occasional document is still open, it'll get backed up the next evening anyway! -
I tried the LDAP, but it wasn't happy!

I have the GP set so that only teachers have access to oneorzero, bookmarked as a favourite. Then they have a department logon. Save a lot of hassle that way.
-
your poor brother! is he having to use CMIS Mark!!!
-
I use one or zero. It's a doddle! for quick setup, give each "department" a logon, and individuals logons for more "demanding" users!

When are you installing Windows Vista and running it?
StewartKnight replied to wesleyw's topic in Windows Vista
Ha! Can I have your spare licences! As for Vista, the question is "whats the point", except I'm paying for it with the CAL!!! GRRRRRRR -
More freeware than you can shake a stick at :)

If you read on, the post says that the pictures still don't come through!!! -
True enough Tony, but it's not relevant in most schools!

Never, Never buy viglen, we had them here when I first came. Very poor quality, and overpriced, plus the h/ds kept failing. I replaced the whole network with Dells!
-
that would only be advantageous is the FSMO with 80% wasn't the fileserver, otherwise, you could get an IP, but not on the domain or your files! Seems like overkill to me, you'd have to have 3 servers at least!

someone posted RPKiller on this site. I use that for blocking individual rooms or computers

wanted round table people !!!
StewartKnight replied to russdev's topic in General EduGeek News/Announcements
as a Knight, I am entitled to be on a round table! -
but how do you stop them playing the games in lessons Quackers?

On my DVD recorder, you can "finalise" the disc, and it becomes playable in pratically all DVD players. I'm sure yours would be the same!

I know I commited the cardinal sin, but it's a machine only I have access to, and then, if I can get the bloody thing to work, I'll change the settings. I've got to the point where it should be asking me to create a toplevel administrator, but it's not, the page is blank. Any ideas Geoff?

the solution to my problem was: when I altered the config.php, I gave "root" access to the db, AND i typed in the root password. I had to leave the p/wrd blank! Now of course, I have different problems

I'm trying to set up a Moodle box. I've edited the config.php to relect the correct detail, but when I goto to the web page, I get this error: "Error: Database connection failed. It is possible that the database is overloaded or otherwise not running properly. The site administrator should also check that the database details have been correctly specified in config.php" Can anyone help please! EDIT: I've sussed this problem, but be prepared for more!!!

we use it here, & I think it's well worth the money (but we only have 100 computers)
-
I'm using One or Zero, absolute doddle to set up on Fedora Core!
-
I've been having problems with Dell also. I ordered 6 laptops in October. Since then I've made numerous phone calls, and still not got anywhere!
-
I'm using RPKiller. You can select which machines you want, and it denies access to I.E. You can't even bypass it using "my computer"!

Laptops for teachers is still in place, even for PE teachers, as for the chaplain, well, God knows!! Our LEA has a next day 3 year warantee on them, but guess what.... batteries not included! There is no real scheme for upgrades, but tell the teachers to "back up" their files onto the network. Then zap the laptops with the recovery discs. That should get rid of the porn/spyware/viruses!

I use rpkiller to turn the internet off, saves so much hassle!
