  1. I'd guess they were after 2 things; (1) Are you up-to-date with the latest in IT? (2) Can you relate this to education Answer, bleat on about wifi & wimax, enableing teachers to do registrations on PDA's. Virtual learning, and remote access for teachers & pupils to access their work, using their own user accounts on the server, from home.
  2. Have I been living in a cave; whats pop!tech?
  3. you have me at a loss Russ, all I saw was a critical flaw in the MS patch this month! BTW, last month they pulled their montly patches due to "errors", wonder if this was the reason?
  4. 512mb ram, using KDE & Gnome. I didn't enable udma on the h/d, is it not enabled by default?
  5. It said I needed Mandrake, but I tried it & didn't like it. I'm using Fedora at the moment, and that seems to do what I want. What I do find frustrating is, I'm running it on a 2.8 Cel. and it seems so slow compared to windows, especially switching user. Is this Fedora, or all distros?
  6. already have a GP where if I move students to, they have no internet access (remove the proxy in the GP). What I'd like is a DYNAMIC way. It's alright doing it before the lesson, I'd like to do it on the fly... i.e., on a web site I don't like, ban them without them having to logon again. PLUS, ban a room for an hour (can't do this in GP yet) for example.
  7. Lanviewer is OK, but it takes the kids an hour to figure out that they can use Windows Explorer, instead of Internet Explorer!!!!!
  8. filtering isn't an issue, we use Securus which catches everything I want, what I'd like to do is stop the kids using the internet, when I want to stop them!
  9. this job expired over 2 weeks ago....whats the point in posting it????
  10. I'm on with Moodle (which seems simple,as I've already got the correct servers up and running. But the internet access is one that would really be a feather in my cap. Is there a downloadable free system to control squid / t'internet?

    What Next?

I've created a Linux box (miracle of miracles!!) from Fedora, got Apache, MySQL and PHP working up and running. Now I've installed a helpdesk called OneorZero. Not as difficult as I imagined (once I got past my stupidity, and with help from mark_wood). So, what next. What do you use your linux boxes for? Is there a relatively simple project that could benefit the school? How difficult is it to get squid to control internet access in different rooms / computers? Thanks for any suggestions!
  12. I've had the same problem with the little blighters here stopping the Sophos "lightening bolt". The ICT teacher told them, that was the software that logged everything they did, and allowed him to log onto their machine! DOH! Anyway, I spoke with Sophos themselves (very friendly and useful). Apparently it doesn't make any difference if they kill the icon, it's just an indicator. Sophos is still running!
  13. Promethian Smart Boards
  14. Gecko, I did hijackthis, but I didn't need anyone to explain it to me. It didn't solve my problem, but ewido did, and there was no need for me to analyse anything!
  15. I haven't bookmarked the front page. I prefer the scroller thingy on the right in the forums. By all means keep the centre block on the home page, but don't delete the scroller, it's TOO useful!
  16. Don't get me wrong Geoff, if I could use a linux box for the "day to day" I would. I have more than enough computers, but not enough room! So I'm stuck with an XP machine that does "everthing" and a couple of laptops (Thank you "teachers for laptops" for 1 of them) But I do a lot of other stuff too (video editing, music editing.. and stuff), but I wouldn't know where to start with linux (I'll have to cancel giving the conference lecture on Linux for this year) That leaves me with a XP pc. At least I know what I'm doing on that! So spyware is sooo anoying!
  17. Just found this piece of software, and I'm well inpressed. It found more baddies on my computer than the pay to use ones, and 172 the adaware et al couldn't! www.ewido.net I be interested to see what it found on your system Tarquel!
  18. might give squidalyser a bash (so to speak) myself!
  19. I keep all my other films (ahem, I mean data) on 2 seperate drives. It's just the hassle of re-installing all the software I use!
  20. I'm hoping to win that!!!
  21. I've had one from someone called 'Chick' asking if I want to chat....anyone else had that? Now, if we have over 300 members, and everyone sponsored my charity trek £10... think of the lives edugeek could save.. all of them potential ICT technicians!!!!
  22. Wasn't Bisley was it! I had wondered if teachers should be told about edugeek!!
  23. It's my opinion, thats there is more than 1 type of spyware. By that, I mean, there is some that slap you in the face evertime you're on t'internet, and then there is the hiding, doing nothing that you can see or feel stuff. Everything Tarquel has suggested I'd done (and more). But I know that there is stuff lurking that I haven't removed. Everything seems fine, but I know it aint! Are you sure you've kicked spyware butt Tarquel, because you just never know!!!!!!!! 8O
  24. It's funny but all the regular spyware apps (and by regular, I mean free) don't pick it up, but the ones that do a scan, then say $34 to remove it, picks it up (along with 122 others, that the freebies don't) I got rid of the offending one in the end manually, but I'd prefer a remover that picked it up, as who knows what else could be lurking!!! BTW what a pain it was too. Still alls quiet, but I know there are still 121 of these beasties on my system!!!
  25. I've got a nasty little app on my computer (came from downloading some "legit" add-ons for flight simulator (for the father-in=law honest!!)) Task Manager calls it "conceptual desktop" and the task is called gui.exe. Non of the usual suspects gets rid of it (adAware, Spybot Killer, Panda et al) If you're in google and you type in "mr & mrs smith" for example, google freezes, and this pop-up (well, more of a slide up really" try to sell you loads of Mr & Mrs Smith goods! I'm not looking for a list of spyware apps that I havn't used; what I'm after is someone who's seen it and knows about it. Yes I know I could just delete the gui.exe, but where is the fun in that? I want to nuke it once and for all!!
