I think it's to do with the re-licensing for SIMS .net. LA's usually bulk buy SIMS licenses direct from Capita for LA supported schools, but when a school becomes an Academy, the license is not transferable from the LA and the school has to purchase a SIMS license directly from Capita I believe.

As the title suggests, I'm looking at a replacement Nvidia GPU to replace my GTX 280. I'm looking for one that will last a good amount of time and will have no issues running DayZ, ARMA3, Battlefield 3/4 etc. No budget but ideally, I'd say no more the £150? Could be worth applying the classic re-index patch against the SIMS database. Also, what size is your SIMS.ldf file? Sometimes I've seen performance issues in schools where the SIMS database has slipped into full recovery mode and an upgrade has put it into full mode and the log file has just grown and grown. Also, have you thought about archiving previous attendance marks? We've done this in a few schools where there have been performance issues in Attendance and it's made a noticeable difference.

This error is showing up in event viewer every 15 seconds: I assume it's because the SIMSScheduledTaskUser is missing from System Manager. Not too familiar with this user, so does anyone know what permissions this user should have, and is the password for the account usually a default one? Odd though as no SIMS scheduled tasks are trying to run at the moment.

Just gone onto SupportNet to get a copy of Capita's (outdated) minimum system requirements guide to find it's no longer a sticky item! I can't seem to locate it by search either! Any ideas where it's gone? Is this a sign that it's being updated?! If anyone knows the Document ID, please let me know.

No ETA for the DayZ stand alone yet. As Rocket always says, "It will be done when it's done.". However looking at the new video logs and the quality of the in-game footage, it's looking well on the way (I'd take a wild stab and say 2-3 months time?). Plus they are using the Minecraft model and will release an early build of the game at a low price which you can buy and then update as the game develops, or you can wait and pay more for the polished version further down the line. However, the DayZ mod is seriously awesome and is still constantly being worked on by the community so don't think it will just come to a stop (however don't forget that it is still 'Alpha' so bugs happen). IMHO, it's well worth buying ARMA2 to play the mod. (If you get ARMA2 via Steam, you can now download the mod via Steam too). Also, ARMA2 is a great game in it's own right so if you do buy it, be sure to play it as you'll be effectively getting two great games!

The volume of DOTA2 copies? A friend gifted me a copy of DOTA2 which I installed and played it once. After that, Valve have given me three lots of 7 copies of DOTA2 to gift to friends. No idea why, but from what I've read, I'm not the only one. Annoyingly, almost everyone on my friends list has it now so I'm left with 18 copies in my gift library.

You nailed it!!! I'm sure ARMA2 will run on Windows 8, and I bet the new stand alone will also be supported! Either way, hopefully it will run a treat on my new machine (ETA, Friday!!!)

Google Music allows the storage of 20,000 tracks for free. It's quite good too as it will try and match what your uploading to what they already have saving you some bandwidth. You can then play them from a browaser, smartphone or any other device with an internet connection. It also allows the downloading of your library if you loose your local copies. If it's all on an external drive, make use of your sites high speed connection?

I've uploaded almost all of my music to Google Music now. Even though I have an iPad with it all on, it's nice to know I can stream it from any device with a browser and internet connection. Plus, it's another form of backup. I have very few documents that I would need constant access to so a full personal Cloud solution for me is not needed. I do have a Dropbox account that I use for some files (like my KeePass database or odd photos), but I mainly use it to upload large documents and download them to my iPad. I have a vast amount of photos (about 16,000?) and they, along with my music and films/TV collection are all stored on a ReadyNAS drive. It has 2 X 1TB raided drives in it so I always have a copy in case on drive fails. Again, no real need for me to have constant access to my photos or films, however I do keep thinking that it would not be a bad idea to upload my photos somewhere. I could always open up access to my NAS across the internet but I doubt I'll ever need to.

Interesting to Know steam is happy on Windows 8 considering how anti-Windows 8 Valve actually are. If it did not work, that would be the decider for me.

My new rig will be complete by next weekend but I'm in two minds regarding sticking with Windows 7, or upgrading to Windows 8. From what I hear, Windows 8 is better in most ways around performance, memory/CPU usage and disk writing, but the crappy Metro interface puts me right off! If you were in my position, what OS would you go for?
