Nope, XP. But after checking out the website, it has a windows version. Originally I wasn't going to bother with converting to DVD because of mixed results with other tools. Will give this a chance, though.

Sorry, I meant to explain that, too. The method I've been trying to follow involves creating the playlist file, but you have to edit the file locations so that they're relative paths. The current version of VLC doesn't let you do that.

How would you go about creating a CD/DVD that will automatically play a folder of videos? I've had a go with portable VLC, but it's having issues with relative paths when I want to pass it the video folder. There's a method that uses VLC Portable, but it references and older version. Unfortunately I can't find any archives that store the version (prior to June 2008 work for definite), so I'm out of luck so far. Does anyone else have an alternative method?

Some of the staff here are using Skype in order to communicate with another school in Kenya (I think, I really should pay more attention...) and are happy with the result. As for internal communications, I'm keen on implementing Openfire and Spark. Especially as only certain classrooms have a telephone - it should make getting hold of people a lot easier.

Exactly. Block shifting saves a hell of a lot of time if you need to slow down rapidly, and then start off again. If you have plenty of distance, then sequential changing is fine. I use engine braking to slow the car if I'm coming up to a stop.

Quoting myself here, but I got curious. I wanted to work out the relative sizes of atomic bodies. For example: If you took a Hydrogen atom, and expanded it so that its diameter was 100metres, i.e. the size of a football bitch, the proton at the centre would be just 1mm across. The rest is pretty much just empty space.

Smaller than a single electron is a bit of an exaggeration! But yeah we're currently composed of mostly nothing whatsoever. The distances between the components inside an atom are pretty vast, relatively speaking. It's not a stretch to think that they may possibly have been a lot closer at some point.

IMO it's all nonsense. Intelligent design is advocated by the same people who think Jesus rode to work on the back of a triceratops. With regard to Religion, it was created to subdue the masses and create positions of power. Before religion you'd have needed a lot of men and weapons to keep a population toeing your line. With religion you tell them that being obedient means you get to spend eternity in a blissful paradise, which would have been a stark contrast to the lives that they would have been living.

As GrumbleDook mentions, check out the performance of the NAS. A lot of devices simply don't offer read/write speeds capable of taking advantage of gigabit networks. It may actually be cheaper to buy/build a fileserver that has the performance that you require.

Thinking back, I once had the opposite problem in my old Clio. Was driving home after going to the cinema, and my accelerator cable snapped. I was going up an incline at the time, so my foot went flat to the floor and I lost power. Luckily I had sense to pull to the curb and put my hazards on. Bloody French rubbish.

Just curious as to what jobs various people here do in the holiday periods. I do the portable appliance testing, network audits and a general tidy up, maintenance and doing any major jobs, like new IT suites etc.

Looking at some of those comments makes you realise just how stupid some people are. Example: 70mph. I don't think some people realise how long it takes to get to 70. My car isn't slow, but it still takes ten seconds to get to sixty. His Yaris probably wasn't doing 70 until after a good twenty seconds. If you can't figure out how to reduce power to the wheels in that timeframe then you shouldn't be on the road.

Or buy the album to be delivered, then pirate a copy in the meantime.

How do you go about rolling this out to all machines in a domain? With IE6 no longer supported by a number of major players, plus the security issues that continually crop up, I'd like to see how users get on with Chrome. The trouble is, Chrome by default installs itself to the application data folder in the user profile. Any way to install it to Program Files?

Well I've been playing about in Sketchup, and this is my progress so far. I've designed an exploded version of the table I intend to build. It'll be a bunch of 34mm (2"x2") square planed timber for the frame, plus a load of 5mm mdf for the sides and spacers, etc. The LCD screen will sit on a 2mm sheet of perspex, and I'll have a 6mm sheet for FTIR above. LEDs will be held in place in a wooden frame, with 14 along the long side and 10 on the short. 30mm intervals I'm planning on using at the moment. This is pretty exciting! multitouch2.zip

Cheers for that. I'm looking through ProcessMonitor's (filemon and regmon were retired, and processmon is the lovechild) log, and I'm sure I've found the offending dll, but there's no indication of what it was doing to cause the crash. Grrrr.

Having an issue with Corel Draw X4. Opening the file dialog (open/import/save) results in the application crashing unless you run it as the local machine administrator (be it via log on, or Run As...). Here's the strange thing: It crashes under my account also, despite me being a member of the local admin group. My Documents is mapped to a network share, which leads me to believe that's where it's having the trouble. Is there a tool available that will let me track an application's calls to the filesystem (successful and failed) so that I can work out where it's tripping up?

Teaching web programming may be a good route. They can still learn the fundamentals (recursion, selection etc) but they'll also see immediate results. It's easy enough then to create subfolders within the web directory the server uses, and set up folder permissions so that they can only access their own folder via the filesystem.

Strange how Spiceworks isn't picking everything up. It works pretty well here...
