In response to dealing with a revolving door of casual users. What I would do is setup an OU for each year of entry (I know its not always BP to setup a lot of OUs) e.g. 2011 intake and then move all students in the group to the year of original intake. If they are casual students, setup an expiry date for when they are going to leave that should address any security concerns. At the end of that academic years intake lifespan if you like simply either disable all accounts in that OU or delete them. Archive the data for 2 further years. If you have casual staff which aren't on SIMS, put a form system inplace where they fill in the time of their casual employment, if they don't have a termination date only enable the account for the period of that term and make their LM aware to ask for an extension.

We had drive mapping issues with Server2003 in a previous place. What we did is changed the share mappings from \\server01\userfiles$\username to the FQDN like this \\server01.mynetwork.net\userfiles$\username

hehe. I bought my flat with the contents left in situ as I knocked them down quite a bit. Cost me £65 for rubbish disposal of bulky items and I sold the good stuff so that helped with the disposal costs. I needed to get in in a hurry otherwise I might have used freecycle but most of the stuff did smell!

lol yeah, I only get time to see my mentee because I have an ICT Apprentice whos full time. There are 1,453 students in my school!

Nice one. Well I did do speed and 1 2 1 interviewing with the students this year for careers day. Speed interviewing where they ask you questions about your job, career etc and then mock interviews 1 2 1. Was a good experience and a couple of the students who I was introduced to then say hi to me in the corridors since and I am getting to know a few of them now. The caretakers get involved, one of them has bike club where he teaches them to repair bikes and the other plays in the school band. They suggested to me I should do Computer Club and teach them to fix their own PCs but I don't know if i've got the time but I have taught before. As for mentoring; though I didn't volunteer for the academic mentoring there is a YR11 student I get on well with who is my pastoral mentee (best way to describe it) long story i'm not going to post on the forum. People I know outside of school do say I should just be the guy who fixes the computers and it does my head in. I like you guys am starting to enjoy being a part of the school community.

hehe well i'm glad I am not the only 1 who uses the phrase "little darlings". I have to say since I have worked in a Secondary School, I have found my interpersonal skills get used far more than my technical skills. I see myself as a member of the school community and as such I will engage in conversation with pretty much anyone and I am seen as more than just the IT Techie.

Hi all, Since this September, our school has decided to get as many staff as possible to be academic mentors. Basically each member of staff is a 1 2 1 mentor for students who are struggling to get good grades for GCSE's in YR11. The object of the game is for the student to have a 30min meeting per week with the mentor to discuss progress and encourage the student to study harder.. effectively. They also have 1 meeting with the students parents. A lot of staff (especially the caretakers/student supervisors) see themselves as wanting to work more closely with the students than they do at the moment and now have a mentee each. I turned it down initially due to being stupidly busy in school. My question really is, do any of you have students that you mentor or get on well with? I tend to find that all other techies I have met from other schools are scared of teenagers or perhaps scared of potential accusations. Anyone care to share their thoughts/experiences?

All I can say is, this student was lucky. That Fire Extingushier would have killed someone had it landed elsewhere.

Routine? whats that? usually I end up with jobs to do before I even get to the office. If anyones got time to sit in the office, they've got too much time on their hands!

My NetSupport is tied down to pretty much only work on the teacher PC in a set ICT Room so that the teacher can only remotley access PCs in the same room the students are working in. Only I at present have the ability to access computers remotley with admin/teaching PCs presenting the user with a prompt asking for permission to view their screen before a remote access session commences. VNC, GotomyPC.com and TeamViewer are totally and utterly banned. I'm taking no chances!

This is almost as bad as them leaving PCs logged in all the time with SIMS running! I want to stamp this out totally but its always the human element that is the weak point in network security

We keep all photos in a staff only file share though the students keep pics of themselves on their own home drives. There has been talk of putting these images on a secure flickr account, however i'd rather have this data in a protected location that we have control over.

This is why ITIL makes sence to use in a school environment even if it has to be in a modified format to fit the schools ICT setup. I do the same with my software but it is a pain trying to backtrack when you inherited a site without meeting the predecessor or other staff to ask! Software media as a general rule should be kept in a locked cabinet to comply with licensing laws and a spreadsheet kept of what is installed where incase of an audit.

I can't believe a school would do such a thing like this and to such young pupils. In the year I have been working in a secondary school I have come to realise how sensative even the most mature YR11's can be and especially with the subject of death. Had I not known what was going on i'd have been just a shocked. I don't see what point they were trying to prove and by saying that the students were more upset because the teacher was "liked" is rubbish!
