Hi all, We have some visually impared students at our school and the councils VIP adviser has visited the school and asked me to look into providing software on all classroom teacher PCs (the ones running IWBs) so that the student can view the teachers screen from their dedicated laptop. She suggested VNC Viewer and some other schools use this, however I have concerns as these PCs are also used for viewing SIMS and if a student managed to get into VNC over the network and view peoples desktops this won't be very good! Any advice appreciated!

Successmaker has been the bane of my life since I have been working in Secondary Education. The program has stopped working sighting error code 2 as the issue. All RM can say is "it must be your shortcuts". Well i've spent 3 hours on it logged in as admin. Anyone able to help?

My school is in the odd position where each classroom has its own desktop PC and teaching staff, SLT and Admin staff with a specific need are issued a laptop. In my last school which was a primary we went in this direction only because we had SMART IWBs coming in and there was a laptop for teachers scheme up and running at the time. I got the laptops in on budget hehe..

no one in my school likes our Fronter VLE... Though some of the time I find that they aren't using it correctly

When I first started at my current place I told myself that I was going to smile and be pleasent but never anyones friend. I won't add them to Facebook or be seen to be too pally with them. I do go on staff nights out though. I send out weekly updates on a friday explaining key issues, e.g. email being slow and what steps are taken to be done about it. I also say how many jobs are still open and what the response times are looking like. There is a strict rule, no call = no support at all times, there are no exceptions. Its worked out fine and everyone knows where they stand. I have a lot of calls in as my school has expanded and I am still flying solo! lol

Phew, during the summer holidays I had the site updated to the current WSUS updates as no one had deployed these before I started at my new school. Of course this week I have been stung by this issue and we got a call yesterday to say OFSTED are turning up on Tuesday, so I hope this works as I have only Monday to fix it!!!

FE colleges tend to pay no more than your local secondary school, due to incorperation away from LA control a lot of colleges are now trying to rebalance their books especially as schools are now taking students into new POST16 arrangements which offer some of the same courses as FE colleges and the failiure of the learning and skills councils rebuilding scheme. HE used to be where the money was but this has now been hit by the credit crunch. I used to work at a University and was made reduandant at the end of 2009 and ended up taking a pay cut and having to move to get another job. That said I do like the school.

DBAN Autonuke is very handy for securley wiping hard drives and also testing laptop hard drives which have failed due to being dropped by the user! If the machine isn't letting you format or nuke the disk, go into BIOS and the MBR protection might be called virus protection. Turn that off and try again

When I was at the University, we did originally use cages. I think they were a throw back from the days when RAM and CPUs were worth good money on their own and were easily removed and obviously not noticed until the next ICT session. I remember removing the last remaining cage and being given a bag of 140 keys, and of course the one which opened the cage was the last one! We then went over to having master keyed padlocks and looped the mouse and keyboard cables round these to stop theft. My current school, we have Dell 320s which do open quite easily, I did consider using master keyed padlocks though I have used zipties succesfully (as most pupils never turn up with a pen let alone a pair of scissors!) Only one cut off so far and they left their scissors behind!!

Some of the new BSF builds seem to have them sitewide. Often used to play the sound effect of a bell etc to indicate the change of lessons. Also good when used by the reception to tell someone their visitor is here or the caretakers warning you that the door is about to be locked!

Thats very true. We are spoilt rotten with the new school I work at as we have all the architects diagrams etc and even photos of the build stage. But yes, documentation is often a second consideration.
