We had Oliver 3 and then 4 running on our school servers. It had some problems and then Softlink offered out a free upgrade to version 5 for all version 4 users. The server it was on had a faulty motherboard with an expired warranty so as soon as they offered hosted services I persuaded our school to subscribe. Never looked back :-D

Hi all, At our school ICT like to do pod casting, sound recordings etc. We have a newish ICT suite with HP Elite 8000 Desktops with Realtek HD Audio chips intergrated to the motherboards with multi function front ports, e.g. the ones which you can insert either a microphone or another set of headphones. Well anyway the Realtek software takes away the windows volume settings for microphones and forces the user to choose which device they have plugged in and also forces them to calibrate the microphone before they can start using any recording software within windows. This is becoming a night mare, no teacher expects a class to sit there for 10 minutes and calibrate recording devices. The operating system is XP Service Pack 3. I know in the past you can just get the .inf files etc and point device manager to these for the drivers. If anyone has these or any suggestions that would be great, also if anyone has a vbs script to reset windows sound levels on login for all users via gpo that would be even better. Thanks, J

I loved Dabs. Our account manager once got me a HP laserjet 4000 series 3 days before Christmas when it was out of stock on their website. Seriously that is good service!

I don't find policies a problem if their clean and everyone understand what they do and doesn't touch them without a plan! The problem is when you have a spiderweb of policies without documentation.

I'm in the same boat, stuck with desktops syncing to a folder on the users home drive, offline folders enabled with log off times exorbinate! I have found a microsoft hotfix which deploys as an MSI that clears off all roaming profiles. I have only just started testing this and be warned you need to ensure a successfull sync is done before installing it on a laptop. What I want to do is just ask users to make a VPN connection to the school when working remotley and find a way to remove roaming and offline profiles with only desktop shortcuts being copied on logon and logoff. Any ideas welcome :-)

I've had AVG for about 10 years on my home PC and not had a problem yet, would love to roll it out in school.

Hey, I had an email from Softlink offering to host Oliver with Softlink and they would do all the upgrades etc (we are on 4 but they will move us to 5 as part of the migration) This seems like a good idea to me as I wouldn't have to worry about backing this up or running a dedicated server onsite. Anyone else considered this or have any thoughts?

Temping is a good way in though it is a shame the school isn't keeping you on. I know Cotham and John Cabot schools were advertising recently for IT Techs

Yea cards are soo much less hastle than keys, we have both here oddly as the card system wasn't considered realiable enough so some doors are card, some key, some both! Arrghh. Anyway does anyone know a FM system which will do both cashless catering and door control on one system? would love to ditch one server and have as many things intergrated as possible.

In a previous job we used to have a access to data form which was part of our AUP. If someone wants access to another persons data, be it because they are off sick or an investigation. They will fill out a form stating the nature of the request, this has to be signed by a member of Senior management (who then takes responsibility not you) for this and then you sign as the facilitator. This is a point I have made to my school, the head is ultimatley responsible for data security, they delegate that to IT Administrators, but the administrator is only there to act for them and they take responsibility as they have asked for it to be done and a log is kept. Its the same for unblocking websites, SLT are there to lead, let them do just that.

I had all this fun last month. I had to basically, create a group in AD for LDAP to import papercut users. Add the staff and students to the group. Tell papercut to import users via the security group, imported all users. Extracted all users using papercuts CSV export. cut the spreadsheet down to 4 columns I think it was, user-name, first name, surname and card id. Extract the card id's from SIMS. Download a script which converts .CSV to .TSV formats, run the script, import the tsv file back into papercut telling it to overwrite all existing users etc and hey presto after that pollava one working and provisioned papercut system complete with card ID's. :-D

Not a bad ole idea, I did think of that myself. My only concern is they will still come back and haunt you with any problems. Did anyone bring anything back to you?

Hi all, I have inherited a setup of Dartfish 4.5 which has a license server service installed on the file server and presumably 1 of the dongles is for said software. I have installed Dartfish client on a teachers laptop, it searches for the license server, but fails to find it. However on a PC that was setup before my time, it installs and works fine. I am guessing that Dartfish needs to look at the server using a port number like Solidworks etc. Can someone tell me how to point the client installs to the license server Thanks!

Yeah, I was also explaining Hex and Binary to them and they seem to have been taught Binary during Physics lessons. I also did enjoy watching the 15yo student who told me he wasn't very good with IT, touch type faster than I could at his age (and probably now). I was impressed!

I had a group of students tell me they had heard there was going to be a shortage of IT Professionals due to schools ICT not being very interesting. They were also telling me they were bored so I said "i'll explain the OSI 7layer model and then you'll wish you hadn't asked!" (hoping to hear them say, we'll change the subject). "Oh no please tell us", they said. To be honest if I had the time I would, however it is the curriculm that is a fault not the teachers or teaching. This is why I am an IT Tech and not a IT Teacher even though the Assistant Head thinks I should train as one!

I can't believe I finally sold my Risc PC which I had saved from my first school IT job. Was in mint condition with the i486 card. However I didn't use it and needed the space.

I'll think twice next time I see those lovely tasty cakes. Never know what the little darlings might have put in them! LOL
