@maark @mullet_man. Was the AD domain a single domain across schools or was it a different in each school?

As its a year on, just out of curiosity how did it all go? are you fully in house?

Hi all I have been having intermittent problems with my Exchange 2010 server which is on Server 2008 R2. The Exchange server will suddenly refuse Outlook 2010 connections from some users. On the Outlook client it comes up saying that The connection to the Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action. Outlook then pops up a box headed Microsoft Exchange, under the Microsoft Exchange Server, the schools webmail address is listed which is incorrect and the mailbox does have the correct AD login in the box. A reboot of the Exchange server usually cures this. However its happened a couple of times in a short space of time, its happening today after the server rebooted overnight following an auto-update via WSUS. I have gone though the error logs and I can't find anything obvious, although it is a bit strange that users are getting a prompt listing the exchange server as the webmail address. I am currently trying to persuade the school to go towards Cloud based email.

This was done nearly 10 years ago in Bristol with Asus EE books and T Mobile dongles from memory. It only seemed to last a couple of years. We have given out old refurbished laptops to students in care but not provided internet access.

The only other thing I would chuck out there is; if RMs CC customer base is falling with Network Managers removing CC due to cost and manageability. Will they have enough money coming in to be able to develop this product into Windows 10 and beyond? They could one day decide that this isn't profitable and discontinue it or the development and support suffers due to lack of uptake.

Our server room is within our office so it has some roller doors but no lock. The main door is locked. My old school you had to go into the basement though one door and then the next door had signs on it. Mostly to stop contractors simply walking in out of curiosity.

We seem to be ok in my school with regards to hardware theft. In my previous school we did put zip ties though the holes. In other places I have worked, we had a box of keyed alike padlocks and we padlocked every pc. I'd advise doing that in your case, the snips just get cut with scissors. Also enforce a policy of no pupils in a classroom without supervision.

I agree. I uploaded it to a network share, used the UNC path for example \\appserver\microsoft visual studio\install.bat and used impero to execute the install.bat script. 26 out of 30 PCs installed. The other ones just stopped and didn't install. I run the ones that failed locally a couple of times and this then worked. I'm now just waiting for the teachers to test the software before the controlled assessments start.....

We have the local PCSO's office on our site. One PCSO is attached to the school, the others work in the community but have the use of the office due to closures of local police stations.

I think it is probably a pre requisite missing. I made sure all of the PCs in the room had updated windows and ran it again. The majority installed the software so that's the only conclusion I can come to. Are you running Windows 7 or have you made the move to 10 yet?

They call you before the site manager? I would be swapping that around. Usually its; Site Manager, Caretakers and then the Headteacher. Hopefully you're getting a call out allowance. My current place, we still have a residential site manager so he deals with it first.

both places I have worked, have a phone line dedicated to the fire and burglar alarm. They contact a monitoring station who in turn call out the Caretakers. We have also had a GSM link which could be set to phone a duty mobile phone. As Network Manager I would probably be passing this issue to a Premises Manager but recommend a physical phone line away from other systems.

One of my last places. We would open up their email and email the rest of the IT Team. "Tea on me for the week!"

We only do 6th form cards. The 6th form librarian takes the pictures during the induction day before the students join and then takes the others when they start on the first few days. I then extract from SIMS with Salamander and print the cards. As one of the others said. We too have expiry dates on the cards otherwise they can't use them for discounts. Bus passes for us as were in the city centre the are common reasons for having cards. Our 6th form centre is across the road from the main site.

The same here. But some purchases have slipped though the net. A lot of time is spent on trying to get cheap gadgets to work!

Hi all, Ok this worked on machines which I had downloaded offline files onto. But I tried to install VS Community on to machines which I haven't installed it before and although I get the getting things ready screen coming up, it closes and nothing happens. The bat file I am using is below; "\\sccmdeploymentserver\source$\Microsoft Visual Studio 2017\vs_community.exe" --add Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.CoreEditor --add Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.ManagedDesktop --add Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.NativeDesktop --add Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.Universal --add Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.Python --includeRecommended --passive --norestart

Thanks Arthur. Python will install if I run the install as a separate script. If I try to run the install script with the python line added. It doesn't run. If you've got one script which installs python and the rest of the stuff, please let me have it - thanks

Hey, This is an interesting thread. Can anyone let me know how the created their json file and how did they install VS community using the command line? I have tried using a json file a student kindly created, but the install keeps failing saying it cannot find the json file. But it keeps looking for the file on the C:\program files location when the json file is on a network share as the program files\vbstudio folder hasn't been created. I am happy to start from scratch using any instructions.
