Hi all, at my previous place we used MAC address based VLANs with Cisco VMPS. Basically you entered the MAC address of a device into the desired VLAN and wheverever you plugged it in it would find itself, this is also good for security as only the devices you approve can be put onto the network, this is also good if you want to flood wire a building and add devices remotley etc. My current place has been configured with port based VLANs, so each switch as above has ports mapped for various device VLANS, wireless APs, workstations, servers etc. When I get some time I'd like to do the CCENT qualification at least to be able to replan this setup as I'd like to make changes to mine eventually. We also have our Class A ip address (ones starting 10.xx.xxx.xxx) provided by the LA as we are all part of the council WAN at the end of the day so devices need to be seen within that network.

I took over my school with no documentation whatsoever! I have managed to write a site profile which shows where to find things, what server is for what and where to find equipment etc. I haven't started working the network out yet!

Are the working conditions really that bad?! They get a dormatory and more than likely 3 meals a day

In my school most of the staff and student laptop trolleys have Dell D531 Laptops. Each week I am sending back a hard drive or power supply for one of these back to Dell (thank god for a 5 year warranty) I have used Dell laptops in the past for school and these just don't seem the same quality. Has anyone else had problems with this model?

And this is why I ditched my Old Epson Stylus printer for an HP Laserjet 1010 back in 2004. Best printer i've ever had and just shows how often you really need to print colour. For me twice in 5 years!

My experience is pretty similair to Mike. Started off in a Primary school on work experience and built a new network from sctrach, this is when I learned Server 2003 and AD domins, group policy etc. But I was the only person there as IT Tech so I did everything except manage staff obviously. I then went to work for a University as a Technician for about 18 months and got promoted to a systems admin on the server side for 12 months when the credit crunch came along. I work in a large secondary school now as the sys admin and technician so defacto I am the Network manager but I don't make those strategic decisions as Mike pointed out. I will be getting 1 maybe 2 apprentices soon as I will start learning how to line manage so things may change.

Do you think they might just put all schools on managed service in the name of cost savings? I remember when a lot of catering/cleaning jobs were TUPE'd over to the private sector for this reason.

PCounters quite good, intergrates nicely with AD. If you want to add credit to multiple users, simply create a group in AD and add the specified ammount. Don't forget to remove the users afterwards or they will be getting more print credits everytime you add more users! One thing i've found though is if the XPR Reports database gets to around 600Mb the XPR service doesn't come back on reboot. You need to archive off the PCounter data each year.

lol. In most of the new Skanska schools in Bristol, they have these anti bully/vandalism unisex toliets which are open to the corridor except the cubicles. My school although 3 years old still has the old fashioned single sex closed toliets!

Humm... thats what I was thinking, the problem is the users want to be able to access their files whereever they are, we do have a VPN for all users which is quite succesfull when users login correctly. We decided to redirect all users desktops to the My Documents folder as they keep on saving to the desktop and when their profile breaks they would loose their work (not to mention desktop login times). Problem is now if we turned off offline files when a user logged into a laptop without our network connection they would get an access denied message on login :-(

Hi all, I'm having some problems with offilne files and I need advice on the best way to manage them. 1. Users keep clicking the cancel button when the files start syncronising at log off. This of course causes the CSC folder to fill up. Can the cancel button be disabled? 2. Users keep filling up their home folders and I have one user who has managed to fill 19GBs of data in their home folder. She argues that she needs all the data, I need a way to set the offline cache to only syncronise users data which has been modified since it was last synced. You know the same way an incremental backup works by only backing up what has changed. Thanks J

Its all about communication, as UK101man puts it. If your able to explain things in simple terms which level 1 IT users would understand. Then they will be more understanding. The problem is often when teachers think that its just a case of putting a CD in the drive and its done, you need to expain the steps involved in doing this and then expain that you need to plan these changes just like they would plan for a terms worth of lessons etc..

I suppose you could do a fresh Server 03 build on a new drive and then do an authorative restore of AD on to it. (not that I have ever done this)

I agree with Jamman, this would be a good idea. I have whitnessed two mergers, one University and one College IT system. Network managers became 3rd line support staff, front line techs first/second etc. No one lost their jobs, it just became one big network with more expertise and greater buying power for hardware and licensing etc.

I'd demote that domain controller, promote other domain controllers, change or repartition the servers hard drive and then restore that domain controller from backup to the new drive locations. I have ghosted a domain controller to a bigger hard drive before now and it worked!
