  1. Arthur, thanks for the reply and suggestion, I'm using IOS 12 and 12.4, based on your suggestion it does make sense, so i can just 1. export the config. 2. make necessary changes 3. import the config 4. in the conf-t apply the rule using write mem 5. test the connectivity. please correct me if I'm wrong but that does make sense and easy after all by using filezilla (for tFTP).
  2. thanks for all of your reply guys, so for the long ACL list, is there any better way in doing this ? rather than copy paste the whole lot ?
  3. Hi All, I’d like to know what is the best practice of editing and managing CISCO switch and router access control list (ACL)? I’m now connecting using the blue console cable into the device and then use putty to connect to the console COM1. 1. I enable logging then “show run” 2. Keeps pressing the keyboard to go ahead the “- - more- - “ delimiter 3. Open Notepad then edit the log to remove the “- - more - - “ keyword 4. Make necessary changes 5. Quickly Select 15 lines then Copy paste into the conf-t prompt (to reduce the input buffer limit and avoid timeout) 6. Make sure that there is no spacing or copy paste error in the step above then “write mem”. I wonder if there is a smarter or safest way in doing this to manage large scale network because copy pasting hundreds of line and verifying it one by one through putty and pressing the keyboard is too cumbersome. Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, AWT
  4. ok, now the problem is solved after i use the WDSAdmin account login which is also member of DOMAIN\Administrators.
  5. Hi All, I'm having problem with adding the WDS node, inside the MMC of the WDS server i have selected "Local" but then it failed to add itself with "Logon failure: unknown username or bad password." error message. I've solved the problem in starting the WDS service by following the steps below: In Active Directory: 1) Log into a Domain Controller and launch Active Directory Users and Computers 2) Enable "Advanced Features" from the View menu 3) Find the server object for the WDS server and in Properties select the Security tab 4) Verify that the SELF group has the following permissions: a) Create All Child Objects b) Delete All Child Objects c) Validated write to DNS host name d) Validated write to service principal name e) Read Personal Information f) Write Personal Information or full control (to simplify the access). in my event viewer there is no error message at all. any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  6. thanks man, i don't have it. the assumption here is that the number of the OEM Windows instance online at the same time is equal or lesser than the number of COA (OEM stickers). that's what I understand so far thus the OEM CD-Key will also be compatible with the BIOS on its respective PC/Laptop.
  7. Thanks for the reply Ric, i guess by getting the Windows Server 2008 Datacenter Edition simplifies everything :-o)
  8. Hi All, Can anyone share your experience here or at least provide some advice before i begin company wide deployment of WDS into my workstations. I've got brand new HP desktop which comes with OEM Windows 7 Pro Media, does this means i can create base and capture image with the Windows 7 OEM image for this deployment ? eg: Dell/HP Windows 7 Pro OEM will be deployed on HP/Dell laptop/desktop because i couldn't get the bare metal workstation without OS install on it. my understanding is that the OEM image will be licensed already on the physical machine and also from compatibility point of view, the DVD which comes with the HP/Dell is already tested with them, therefore I'm thinking that getting one single license of Windows 7 Enterprise might be useless since this image is not being used by anyone else on the server. If anyone can clarify this matter with the supporting document then it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, AWT
  9. yes i understand that, but in this case i was just wondering what is the option in case the datacenter license is not viable at the moment.
  10. example I've purchased Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter edition which gives me 1x Physical license and 4x Virtual license so in total i can deploy 5 VM of this OS on VMware ESXi ?
  11. Hi All, Suppose i got the Windows Server serial numbers with both type of serial (Physical and virtual) and the server is using VMware ESXi, can i deploy a VM using the physical serial number as well ? the number of running Windows instance is still the same as the serial number though. can anyone confirms this if possible ? Thanks.
  12. @Psymon, thanks for the clarification, with the datacenter edition i can deploy / create as many Windows Server OS from 2000 - 2008 R2 any edition :-) and yes, thanks to all for the suggestion in using VDA as it seems that is the official way to go now.
  13. and yet I'm confused of how and which license i can get for the WindowsXP VM.
  14. Hi All, What is the most legal way of virtualizing Windows XP SP3 nowadays ? I've got Windows Server 2008 Datacenter Edition which entitles me of having unlimited VM of all version of Windows. here's my list of supporting facts http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/licensing-datacenter.aspx 1) How can I use of Windows Server 2008 Datacenter Edition for virtualization in non-microsoft platforms such as Xen or Vmware ESXi? >> http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/licensing-faq.aspx Q. Do the virtualization licensing rights of Windows Server 2008 apply when used with non-Microsoft software virtualization technologies? A. Yes. The use rights apply regardless of the virtualization product being used. However, any non-Microsoft software virtualization technologies are not supported by Microsoft. For more information about support policies, please refer to the following Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) articles: • Article 897613: Microsoft Virtual Server support policy • Article 897614: Windows Server System software not supported within a Microsoft Virtual Server environment • Article 897615: Support policy for Microsoft software running in non-Microsoft hardware virtualization software 3)How can I activate licenses of virtual machines? >> Input product key, active it through KMS or Internet(base on you license type) 4)If I use Windows Server 2008 Datacenter Edition, then all versions of Windows Server 2008(web,standard,enterprise) are installable on virtual machines? >> http://msmvps.com/blogs/virtualreality/archive/2009/04/01/hyper-v-licensing-explained.aspx 5)If I use Windows Server 2008 Datacenter Edition, then Windows Server 2003 is installable on virtual machines without additional license? >> http://blogs.technet.com/mattmcspirit/archive/2008/11/13/licensing-windows-server-in-a-virtual-environment.aspx 6)Is it possible to create unlimited virtual machines use Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Edition? >> See the above.
  15. very great :-) it seems i can just buy one open License OS and then deploy the image into the OEM licensed machine.
  16. To All, I'm about to deploy new Windows 7 Professional OS into my new HP Desktop 6000 SFF ( Win 7 Professional OEM license included) my question is that for the base image, Is it ok to get just one Windows 7 Professional with 3 years Open Value ? The image is created from a volume install/key and this is then imaged on to 100 identical machines which all hold their own OEM licenses, So my assumption is that as long as i can show the OEM key for each machine, then it is all legal. Any suggestion and reference to the Microsoft Official Documentation will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, AWT
  17. thanks for your reply Ric, unfortunately no, we don't have it that is why I'm now in the process of getting MS Open License for the WDS purpose.
  18. thanks man, this is just what i need. have a great day.
  19. thanks for the reply mate, so on top of the existing OEM license i still need to get the volume license :-o ? hm... sounds like the OEM license on the desktop is useless since i need to get another full version of OS license.
  20. Hi All, I've got brand new HP Desktop computers and laptop which comes with OEM Windows 7 Professional, I'm interested in implementing WDS for deploying the custom images that has been customized with my office needs. Can I safely assume that I customize one desktop and then take snapshot as master image then deploy it using WDS ? or do i have to get another license of Windows 7 to do this ? FYI: My Domain controller is Windows Server 2008 R2 and it can server as the WDS server.
  21. Finally, The following trick actually works for me 1. Backup the following regkey: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\EventSystem\ 2. Erase the regkey HKLM\Software\Microsoft\EventSystem\{26c409cc-ae86-11d1-b616-00805fc79216} an below 3. Reboot. 4. Verify that things are working by running vssadmin list writers vssadmin list providers. and then in the services.msc list of services snap ins, make sure the following services are Started Automatically: 1. COM+ System Application 2. Distributed Transaction Coordinator 3. Volume Shadow Copy 4. VMware Physical Disk Helper Service Automatically but not started: 1. Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider 2. VMware Snapshot Provider now the backup is all working great hope this thread can be ablessings for everyone out there. Cheers, Albert WT
  22. Thanks for the reply mate, I've downloaded: Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 Administration Tools Pack for x64 editions and it is totally broke down my gpmc.msc and some of my 64 bit domain controller cannot edit or open the GPO object (>_<)" here's the error message: Windows cannot find 'gpedit.msc'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search. http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/9136/gpmc.jpg so some of my domain controller is now become useless. any help would be appreciated.
  23. what about 64 bit domain controllers ? how does one use GPMC equivalent then ? any idea please ?
  24. albertwt
