I'm either going mad, or something isn't quite working properly. I have a 2008 server in my firewall DMZ with a public ip. I had iis7 working and accessible on the servers public ip and hostname. I've installed apache 2.2 onto this server and no amount of configuration of listen or servername will get it to respond to a remote machine. It will respond when the ip or hostname is accessed locally. I have Allow from all on the documentroot, and nothing shows in access.log. Anybody got any clues? Matt

I've had it working in the past but i'm rusty with any instrucitons as it was likely 18 months ago. You need to get a working samba/winbind implementation(the hardest part) and then moodle plugs into that. I'll try and have a look for any notes that i've still got from my setup. Edit: Just realised that you don't need winbind, I only used it because I needed it for something else. What error are you getting when compiling php with ldap? Matt

I'm going from my experience with WDS on 2008 here. But you can change the PXE bootfile between one that requires an f12 keypress and one that doesn't. Check the server setting under client/pxe settings and see. The 2k8 file names are pxeboot.com (required f12 press) and pxeboot.n12 (no f12) Matt

Cheers for the input guys. We're currently using ghost so it can't be anything to do with multicast filtering. We're looking to use WDS so that we can pre-stage all our clients and future machine building is entirely automated. Matt

I've been having an utter nightmare with setting up wds(2008) to deploy vista this week. I've made good progress though and have one final hurdle; getting multicast working. I can create the multicast session fine, and wds will sit waiting for clients. I cannot however see any multicast sessions when I boot winPE. I am booting winPE 2.1 images (boot.wim from vista sp1 and 2k8 disks) Just wondering if anybody has any ideas or suggestions. Matt.

Right, trying to create a new XP sysprep image. Have installed XP SP2 from VLK disk and updated to sp3 via windows update. I have the sp3 version of sysprep (5.1.2600.5512) and run sysprep -activated -mini -reseal -shutdown. If i redeploy the image to the same machine it will not ask for activation, but if i deploy it to any identically specced machine i am required to reactivate with a message "hardware has significantly changed". I thought the point of -activated was to not require reactivation. Anybody got any ideas. Tia Matt

The exchange server is a member server which will query AD but does not have it installed. Raising the domain functional level modifies the active directory schema and thus only affects domain controller. So to answer your question, no, exchange will not be affected by raising your domain functional level. Matt

Is the print server on the same domain as the client machines. I know there is a security policy that can restrict adding printers to domain only. I'll look it up if you need me too. Matt

I don't understand the saving there. We've just bought a batch of pc's Core 2 duo @ 2.2, 2 gig ram and 19" monitors at £375 per pc. For 6 that's just over 2k. Matt

You will need to do that on each client. (and probably the server too). You may also need to ensure that "require SMB signing" on your windows file servers is set to disabled. matt

Create a folder on your softgrid drive (probably Q: ) called something like MSOff07.001 and install everything to there. If you realise the sequence is broke and need to create another then increment 001. Fairly simple really. Matt

It's not a problem at all for us. You just need to think about a naming structure when you start, and then stick to it. (Plus the 8.3 isn't strictly necessary, it's a "just in case" measure for some dodgy bits of software.) Matt

My apologies, you have been doing your homework, unlike me. I didn't realise citrix presentation server worked that way, though it was similar to TS, hence recommended remote app. We're running 4.2, licenced through SA as there are a few more things that software assurance allows us to use. Matt

I'm a big advicate of Softgrid. It works a charm in our environment. Just to throw another soultion in the works there is also Server 2008 remote app. I'm not entirely sure of the licensing but since it is terminal services based i'd assume you just need TS licences, which are pretty cheap. Matt

Our server room is protected by an Argonite suppression system which I have been assured won't kill us if we're trapped in there when it goes off. I'm really not inclined to test that theory though! Matt

We got a similar error when setting up our only 10.5 mac. We'd forgotten to set the time zone correctly. Such a stupid thing to overlook I know, maybe it's the same for you? Matt

Yes that is a list of all our softgrid applications. Remember though that in softgrid terms an "application" is a shortcut installed during setup, so installing a program with 3 shortucts (the program, help and a support url for isntance) would create 3 applications, which are all part of one "package". We have 95 packages on our server at the moment, taking up 17 gig. These are all immediately available to any curriculum workstation (permissions and licensing permitting). We've had softgrid installed since around october, and all these packages have been sequenced between then and christmas. It really doesn't take too long once you get the hang of it. To create an sequenced application is not vastly different to repackaging an msi. You must install the Softgrid Sequencer on a clean workstation, we use a MS Virtual PC instance with undo disks enabled, for portability and ease of recovery of the sequencer machine. Launch the sequencer, and input the package/application details. The sequencer will then watch what files are copied when you install the program to the local machine. Once installed, you notify the sequencer where the program was installed and it will copy these to the virtual filesystem. You then configure what is downloaded in feature block 1, which shortcuts you want to be available and what file type associations you want. Save the file to the content share on the softgrid server and then import the package to the softgrid server management console. Here you can configure concurrent licensing of the application, what users/groups have permissions to run it, which of the available file type associations you want softgrid to map on the local machine and where you want the application shortcuts to appear for users. The softgrid client refreshes this information on login/machine startup. If i've missed anything let me know. Matt
