Most apps work great. There are only two things that I can recall not working, Dartfish classroom - due to it's wierd licensing system and Success Maker - due to it's local database oddness. I've attached a doc listing all our sequenced application. Matt Sequenced Apps.doc

Currently having softgrid running most of the software on our network I think I can set a few points straight and hopefully help out anyone with problems. Limbo, your first 2 paragraphs are pretty much correct: On first run softgrid will only download "feature block 1" i.e. enough off the app to launch the interface and commonly used features (configured during install) softgrid will then progressively download more of the app when required, however no features are ever not available to be used. You will often find that most apps are not downloaded 100%. Typically (from my experience) 30-70% of the entire package size is downloaded and cached, not all initially, but over time. The beauty of softgrid is that you only need to manage one software install on every workstation, the softgrid client itself (the client isn't without it's problems, but only having to manage one local installation is a major advantage. Client side logging and error messages are thorough and helpful). Since all the applications run in a virtualised environment on the host, they can be guaranteed to work the same across each machine. Application upgrading is a dream due to in place upgrading. For instance to upgrade firefox to the latest release you open your existing package, perform the upgrade and then save it as a new version. The client checks on launch that the cached version of the app is the latest, and downloads the new one if not. srochford: I feel your pain with CS3, it has been a royal pain in the backside to get working, along with Acrobat 8. They both require a modification to a dll before sequencing but they do both work. Let me know if you're still struggling. If anybody has any problems or questions don't hesitate to ask. I've got a reg fragment that runs on machine startup that will import the "Disable front input detection" setting. Let me know if any of you guys want it (I agree, it was a total pain in the arse!) Matt

Personally i'd get a stack of blade servers and a fiberchannel SAN. With an FC card in each blade and FC switch in the blade chassis. That way each blade can use the SAN for all it's storage needs. It's your preference as to what virtualisation software you use, we currently use a mix of vmware, microsoft virtual server and hyper-v. Vmware is no double the best, but hyper-v is more than competent and comparatively amazing value. Obviously you'd want to cluster the blades using your virtualisation software to provide some fault tolerence. Matt

It's no more of a problem that any keys on a laptop being removable. You've just got to educate the kids not to do it, and get the staff to watch them. I know it's not easy. I spent this whole half term hot gluing blanking plates to fascias. God help the first kid I find doing any vandalism. Matt

As somebody previous states, you can only do save-state - move restore-state at the moment. I've tested this on a 3 node cluster that i've got up and running at the moment. Moving a 2k8 vm from one node to another is pretty good, it only drop's 3 pings during the transition. Matt

The O2 dsl is a rebranded Be LLU connection. (http://www.bethere.co.uk) Be are my provider and I am extremely happy with them. You may with to check that Be provide service to your area before you sign up. Also, i think that O2 have usage caps, you may wish to check that these are suitable. Matt

To solve that: sudo nano /etc/hostconfig and change automount from -auto- to -no- (or equivalent, can't remember off hand if it's no or disabled)

Yes, we're running everything except our 2 DC's virtually at the moment. Although our imminent new domain will be setup entirely virtually. We've got a mix of servers running various platforms, all of differing spec's. 2X HP DL350 G5's running Vmware ESX connected to a san. This is seriously under utilised at the moment. Our main workhorses are a 2 dual core, dual cpu machines with 4-8 gig ram. One running VMware server, the other running microsoft virtual server. My preference is to use VMware server, although we will be moving to Hyper-V (if it evaluates well) for our 2008 rebuild. Spec wise, our current machines really are totally adequate. But that hasn't stopped us buying 7 dual xeon dual core 2.66 blades with 4 gig ram for our 2008 rebuild. Matt p.s. Check the FFS section, i'm about to rant in there about something related to this!

I'm hoping that one of you guys has done this and can save my ass a little. I've created about 7 different login scripts for my mac network but none of them work exactly as they should. I'm trying to create a script that will merely connect 2 network shares (one afp and 1 smb) with the correct user permissions and display them on the desktop. Also need to create a logoff script that will clean up these mounts properly. Using loginhooks I can do all bar get the correct share permissions on afp. Using a launch agent works, but the logout/cleanup script doesn't work. Just wondering if anybody has got a script that i can rip-off. It's got to be a fairly common task, surely. Cheers Matt

Fortunately i should be okay, since most recent gradings have been pre-vetted to some degree by the central HR dept. All current salaries will be honoured for a while anyway, probably until the national payscale for support staff comes in. That's the one that i'm worred about personally. Matt

I haven't experienced that problem myself so i don't know what the solution is. Maybe you could post the system.log from an affected mac for us to look at. I can tell you that buying an OSX server won't hold the problem in any way as it is still the client machines that communicate with your AD servers. Matt

I've been playing too, we're at the point where we're going to setup a 2008 domain and run it alongside our existing for a while. I second Ric's recommendations of the Nova-T500 and vista media centre. The Nova-T500 is an excellent package. Dual tuner low profile card with full and half height blanking plates, ir receiver and remote and only requiring on aerial input is amazing value for about the 50 quid it costs. As much as I hate to admit it as well, vista media centre is better than both MCE2005 and Media Portal on XP. Vista media centre looks so much better than MCE2005, and is skinnable with an addon. Media portal, while I'd love to use it, just was not stable or reliable enough to use as an every day television. Regular crashes, slowness when changing channels and flakey recording forced me back to Vista. Matt

I'd seriously look into the VPN solution, but not using SDSL as they are so expensive. There are many providers these days who will supply an ADSL2+ connection which has similar, if not faster upload speeds( and definately faster download). One provider worth a mention is Be (http://www.bethere.co.uk) who's Pro package costs £22/month and provides 24down / 2.5up. You'll need one or two of these depending on your existing access solution. Matt

Found the answer to this: Since the server were DC's running DNS they were advertising their hostnames via the DNS service, to fix you bind the dns service only to the interfaces you want it to advertise. In DNS Console, go to server properties, interfaces tab and remove unwanted IP addresses. Matt

Hello guys, I'm in deperate need of a solution to my problem. I have a server with 3 lan cards in, each of which has a different IP, only one of these needs to have it's address available by DNS. I've tried a few things: 1. Unticking the box under:Connection Properties -> TCP/IP -> Advanced -> DNS -> Don't register..blah 2. Setting DisableDynamicUpdate=1 under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Adapters But after deleting entries from the DNS server i am still getting the addresses back after an hour. Has anybody found a way to stop adapters registering with dns? Btw, half way through writing this i realised that i'd only deleted records from one dns server and may have been replicating back from the other server, if that's the case i'll let you know. Eeek, burning schools are far to common around these parts! They may be fortunate that it's mainly the sports hall area that has been effected. I can relate to how much work is involved in getting everything set back up though. Matt

Had that this month mate with the 250 new machines we setup over the summer. There's a simple fix for the intels: rename c:\windows\system32\igfxsvc.dll and nothing will show up, you just get the standard windows controls with no side-effects. Just get a script to run at machine startup. Don't know for the nvidias but i'd assume there's a similar fix. Matt
