I'm trying to get my hands on an LCD for a laptop that a wonderful science teacher has crushed. I can't be the only one to ever suffer this problem, so i was wondering if you guys have any experience of reliable suppliers that may be able to source me a spare. Or, if you guys have a dead Compal CL51 (Acer travelmate 290, RM nbook4000) lieing around with a decent screen i have a home for it. Cheers, Matt

Okay, yet another of these "i've seen something useful but can't find it again" requests from me. Somewhere recently there was a thread discussing how to fill in usernames from firstname/surname within active directory automatically (or vice-versa), recommended solutions were an update script or a piece of software that forces it when new users are created (through schema change maybe). Wonding if anyone remembers and can point me in the right direction. TIA Matt

I second both Paul's recommendations Panasonic cameras are avaliable for just over £100 each, sometimes you can even find them buy-one-get-one. Milestone Xprotect licences work out at around £100/camera. A demo version is avaliable for download at http://www.milestonesys.com So, for 20 cameras as per your largest quote, you'll be looking at around (software) 100 * 20 = 2k (cameras) 120 * 20 = 2.4k server for storage (big disks) = 1k approx. Overall around 5-6K if you do it yourself. Admittedly you may wish to buy some more expensive cameras for external use, but the BL-C10's are fine for classroom/corridor. The major advantage of ip cameras is if you want to check on a classroom from your desk, you can just chuck the camera IP in your browser and nose around from there. Matt

Aye, they need to use dropdown boxes to populate fields such as transitions on images. Also, positioning of elements as a drag and drop affair, perhaps from within the preview, would be cool. Matt

Damn that's impressive. Just downloaded it and had a go, took a little while to grasp but it looks good. The creation interface could do with a littlework to make it more teacher friendly however. I'll be keeping my eye on this one.

When creating your flash file, you need to change the Window Mode. Go to publish settings, HTML tab, and change window mode to transparent windowless. Equally place wmode=transparent within the tag in you html for your flash object. Matt Edit: Just seen your flash virtual tour (the floorplan one, not the photos.) How did you do that? Please tell me you used a tool i can download. I want something like that effect but don't have the time to create it by myself.

This is quite topical, considering i set one up on a CC3 network yesterday. I would recommend PDFCreator as has already been suggested. Use the version 0.91msi (0.92 offers little extra for the added hastle of creating a new msi) and deploy that to workstations. It works out of the box and doesn't force itself as the default printer. Well recommended (and saves £2k over buying acrobat for all machines, which it did look like the teachers were going to push for at one point) Edit: Just a note about the server version which has been suggested. That could be installed, however it is difficult to get the pdf's to save in the correct place. The save to dialogue box does not appear on user machines, so you have to configure autosave on the server. You could save to a shared area, or pupil home dir's if they are all on one server. If you have load balanced your users over multiple servers, i would go for msi deployment, otherwise server version is suitable. Matt.

We are running our site on Bluesphere's Create at the moment. (http://www.trintiy-school.org.uk) As a product it is a decent solution to the task, any bugs which are found are generally sorted in a reasonable time frame. If you are not that confident at creating a site using open source solutions you could do much worse from the commercial market. However, it is not much more advanced that many open source projects, and if you have the time and skills to modify one of these i would recommend that you do so.(And host it on site) Matt

Hi guys, i've been searching all morning but i still can't find it. I'm sure a little while back i found a thread about using an intranet site to store password reset reminders, much like hotmail etc. It's something I'd like to investigate while things are a little quiet here.
