I have to say, running a single VM on a host seems a mite redundant. If it's for future deployments, then fine. if it's just for backup purposes, maybe a traditional software backup solution would be better? Restoring a whole VM to get one file back that someone has deleted accidently might get wearing after a while. I think what somabc is suggesting is having 2 vm hosts, to allow transition of VMs. having two servers with shared storage means you can mitigate hardware failure risk, and improve uptime. If not, then you'd make them both DCs, split DHCP range 70/30 between them, and probably keep the AV seperate from the wsus and print server. maybe also look at DFS-R for file storage replication.

What about trying the videolan offering? VideoLAN - VLMC, open source video editor Pretty simple, and free - so the price is right ;-)

We use it across 14 offices worldwide, and are slowly replacing the various PBX systems with SBAs and asterisk boxes. Love it, conferencing, presence, IM and telephony all being so flexible has been amazing. and much cheaper than comparable systems...

Or indeed Enterprise, as the thread title. We've not been able to see any value above a laptop. So we're looking at more expensive, less useful and far less powerful devices? awesome. Bear in mind, we're in the City of London, right in amongst all the bankers, headgefunds, etc that all usually jump in on new flashy toys. And we've yet to see a single one used in any kind of business situation, other than maybe reading email. And most people would rather use a smartphone it seems. So, until there's a reason to get one other than 'apps' (ooooh, software ) then I'm staying well clear.

I think you're opening yourself up to hurt if you do this. What if someone uses a swearword? or "disschoolsuxlol" (you'd think parents would know better...but there you go) I don't think its an option that provides any benefit - and it will just increase complexity/issues for you down the line. Maybe suggest keepass or lastpass if they have trouble remembering these things? a little quick user guide maybe?

Check your expected throughput before buying a MSA2000! Ours COULD NOT COPE with the load, I had to immediately replace the controllers with 2312's cause everything was grinding to a halt.

Well hang on, if that's your thoughts, why are you looking at virtualisation? Why did you buy a blade centre and not virtualise on it? The question isn't what you need now - it's how you can reduce future costs through new tech, or give better value to the staff and students. If you went thin client everywhere you could conceivably remove desktop replacement costs. A virtualised blade centre could have increased redundancy, reducing downtime and also having a upgrade route cheaper than new servers each time. A larger outlay on a decent SAN, etc will last longer than an equivilant low spec model - a higher performance point initally will mean it'll be much longer before you hit a performance issue. You're 4 years in with no performance hit BECAUSE your inital spec was high level. not in spite of it. To be honest, I feel if you're not pushing things forward then why bother at all? Do you NEED XP, etc. Windows 98 worked....
