So, we only use TMG for our web logging and publishing MS stuff now, which it's fine for. The 2008 R2 issues were to do with the flood mitigation, site-to-site vpns and malware blocking not working (well, working initially, then freaking the server) if the ISA's internal interface wasn't the first ip on the internal subnet (eg: x.x.x1 for most people) - apparently this was due to changes in the R2 IP stack. Due to this we never build them on R2, if they can't get that right, what else is wrong....? As long as you don't want it do to any traffic routing, it's fine. I imagine most schools environments wouldn't hit the issues we did. BUT, rebuilding an ISA isn't that much work. I did it in an afternoon a couple of weekends ago: export all certs and private keys, copy out static routes, backup isa config rebuild OS and install ISA to same patch level import everything you backed up. ISA/TMG appears to need this fairly regularly IMHO. As an aside, Myself and the @Ric_ 's manager were at a Exchange 2010 migration course at MS reading when it came out - and got some time with the head of UK development. After chatting hyper-v and other things for a while, he brought up TMG. and was subjected to 20mins of my rants on the subject. three weeks later they announced the product was being dropped....whoops :-/

Have to say, @Ric_ and I work in a software development house, and we still get shocked by how wrong some people get their terminology. So there's not much chance for most teachers Having said that though, would some of those 'parts of a computer' posters knocked up to include IWBs, Projectors, etc be a help? if you can make people learn by osmosis it's more likely to stick...

You're increasing the chance of a single disk failure by 3, but as the array is resilient to a single drive failure you're decreasing the chance of losing the data by a third. DFSR on two standard servers is a *much* better idea

Not a DFSR set you're backing up is it? you have to be a bit careful with what you actually select for them. On topic: it has it's quirks, but then again I'm yet to find a backup product that doesn't. It's better than their other absolute pile: netbackup.

Errrrr, McWhut? On Topic: The thing to consider is Wireless as a means to an ends. When we did ours at my last place, it was as part of a multi stage push to improve the IT situation. so with BYOD and school netbooks, teacher laptops, etc there was no way a wired network could compete. So yeah, if anyone's doing it to be cool then they're being foolish. I'd would hope there's no edugeekers taking that path though

I'd speak to the company that set it up and ask if there's any reason for not using the vmxnet3 card type - if not, ensure the vmware tools are up to date and change the network adapters for VMXNET3 ones. are their other vms on the host showing similar symptoms? might be worth checking their isn't a speed/duplex mismatch between the host and the switch also - or that one isn't hardcoded to a slower speed. But also as ergo said, trying it without the backup running is also worthwhile.

You'd be surprised, the exchange services have a higher priority than ping responses, so they can blat everything else out of the picture. Anyway, I'd agree it looks like a network config issue - the CPUs could still do with a life to recommended levels anyway. You've two nics on different vlans it appears - which is on your network, and how are the nics setup in windows?

as before, the exchange store will use all the RAM it can, don't necessarily take that as an issue. CPU could be an issue though, MS recommend 4x processor cores for a virtual MBX role, and the same for CAS and Transport. as you're running combined you may not need 8, but have you got the capacity to increase on what you've got there?

The microserver can still act the same as a NAS if you install FreeNAS, open media server, or similar. Basically it'll be the same as having the QNAP...just cheaper.

Personally I've found synologys to be meh, I really like the Qnap range though. That said, a bit of elbow grease and a HP microserver could get you a nice little system, like @Ric_ has just done
