If you've multiple devices with configs that may change, Rancid is a good idea: Shrubbery Networks, Inc. - RANCID will backup/monitor various device configs, and send a mail when diffs are made.

IMHO, URL based filtering isn't good enough anymore. Content changes so fast online, and there's so many pokey corners of the internet, that keeping up with that is close to impossible. I did a fairly rigorous test of various filters at my last school (bear in mind this was ~5 years ago) and ended up going with smoothwall. However anything without a dynamic analysis portion was way too easily defeatable. Yeah, a dynamic filter takes a bit longer to configure and get your head round how it categories stuff - but the benefits are humongous.

One geographical location? How about hp p4500s or similar, which does enclosure level mirroring. Connected via fibre to three physical servers which then sit behind a pair of hardware loadbalancer? Boom, multi path resiliency and load balancing

Depends what they mean, there's really a lot of grey there. I'd imagine it's TLS they're looking for, but it may also be you're failing SPF verification or similar. Unless they're after a key exchange for PGP? really, without knowing their goalposts you're swinging blind I'm afraid...

Totally disagree. We've just had one of our client support guys buy some shonky SSDs for his demo laptops. The speed he was getting out of them is no different to the HDDs in there before. Replaced with Crucial M4s, and they now fly.

The next BETT show will be next January, however there will be an EduGeek conference this year there's no hard details yet. I'd suggest visiting local schools if they're happy to let you do so, and see what people in a similar situation are doing. Apart from that, thinking about what you want to achieve is the best place to start. Do you want BYOD? - wireless and filtering are probably the first place to start VDI, etc? - Server side investment is important I think really an audit of your current state (including back end hardware, switching) and evaluating the weak points is your jumping off point. I know your head and business manager are probably gonna want toys, but without the infrastructure to support them you'll be setting yourself up to fail. Just my 50pence worth ;-)

Well each systems options will be different, the manual doesn't seem to mention a client limit: ftp://ftp.dlink.co.uk/dir_products/dir-615/DIR-615_Manual.pdf But maybe you could limit the DHCP pool to 5, with a short lease time, and statically assign any physically linked machined out of that range? it's not pretty, but it might work enough
