I want to test the basic SIMS installation procedure, without the constraints of the data / child protection issues that arise from attaching a "real" database

aall the SIMSinst.exe and stuff is up to date. but the blank DB is from 2004. and has the old sysadm users in it. and the simsconfiguration.exe is out of date as well. I'm going to ask the LA for the latest CD. I can't wait for the lecture from, "oh no don't touch the simS server"

at our school, when i started all the "admin" staff (i mean the lovely ladies in the office) were domain admins, along with all of the it teachers and a few other random teachers. the admin staff were because apparently "that is the only way sims and fms will work" the it teachers were because they were it teachers. which was great because all staff were sharing a redirected start menu, and the it teachers quite often decided to uninstall software from computers, removing the shortcuts from everyones start menu. conficker infections were rife as all these domain admin accounts automatically had access to the C$ and admin$ shares on all the machines and could create schedulded tasks. new folders would randomly appear and existing ones disapear from the shared area. loads of other problems, I go on,

all you do to deploy the printers is use the print management console (windows server 2003 r2 or later) to add the printer to the GPO. remember to add pushprinterconnections.exe to the scripts part of the gpo or the xp clients won't pick up the printers.

i think the blank DB and simsconfiguration.exe are out of date. anyone know of anyway to trick solus into downloading them? solus won't work on the new server because its looking for stuff in the database i think? (SOLUS is only for managed sites. etc) on the old server there are no updates to download included no infrastructure updates? anyway to reset it? can the db and simsconfiguration be downloaded via solus?

sounds like proxy server to me. what proxy server is it? is it isa? did it boot up before the DC's?

agreed. same as managed vs vanilla. different strokes for different folks.

I've just done a fresh SIMS.net server install and selected create blank database? Does anyone know what the default username and password is to login? I'd rather not drop the existing school DB from the live sims server right now.

like i said, tbh I think my time is worth more than chasing some £2 memory sticks,

tbh we came to the conclusion it was a marketing scam to get loads of teachers names and email address's

never received ours, cba chasing. I gave contacting them, time wise its cheaper to just buy the sticks.!!!!

ok thanks for letting us know. I swapped a lot of our print queues over half term, it'll be interesting to see whether we have this problem. i tested a few from the workstations and they seemed ok.

very debatable have you actually stressed tested both with identical heavy workloads?

nah i got a plan! i'll test it first and then tell you what it is!

i really don't want to use folder redirection, cause if you lose your network connection the machine hangs anytime you try to show the desktop,

vm the whole lot. my hosts run at 3% CPU all day every day. well maybe not at 7:40 more like 10% then.

just remembered the photoshop thing won't be a problem anyway. the kids have their own VM file server. so i reduced the parition sizes. the problem was that the drive was over a TB

i killed the G4 and got a G6. so I got the 2 G5's and the G6' in the vmware cluster with HA and VMotion now. CPU usage on the ESX boxes never goes above 3%. 6 nics for VM traffic, 2 nics for VMkernel/vmotion/vsphere client can't see why you need 26 servers the two G4's are off, might use them,!!!
