I wouldn't use RAID 5 for a host - the read write speed is far worse than 10. Enjoy the lovely performance and redundancy, capacity is cheap. Defaults are fine - I usually try to put the host itself onto independent storage too.

Depends what you regard as exercise. You can walk and eat, but if you want to go for a run you’ll have to compromise (either bolting something afterwards, having some sort of meal replacement or not eating at that time). Or exercise before/after work.

Yes, it’s a separate DB in SQL Server. As is SOLUS and (possibly) Discover. That way, you can disable access to that DB and give your server some breathing room. Worth checking your licensing checklists to make sure - I’ve scratched SQL off our future OVS now
-
You should be able to run it adequately on SQL Express, which will reduce the licensing costs even if it ends up being a similar load on the server. You won't want the SIMS DB running though so detach that if you haven't already.

Student Appdata folder - redirect or not?
3s-gtech replied to mdrabble's topic in How do you do....it?
Adobe CC Premiere Rush seems to store chunks of important stuff in the AppData. The whole suite goes berserk if you redirect it though! Generally, as above - don’t redirect. -
Dilbert comic strip dropped by US media over creator's racist tirade https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-64775250 Who’d have thought the creator of such a clever comic could be so stupid, as well as holding such blinkered views? Wonder where on Earth that came from. Expect to not see much from his creations from now on!

Look what I found - Anyone else still using one?
3s-gtech replied to Dos_Box's topic in General Chat
I bought one in the sale, and with a PS4 gamepad it worked really well. Has to be wired network to be worthwhile. Haven’t tried mine for a long time, but it’s still set up! -
Smoothwall proxy crashing

The proxy service, or the whole box, not responding? Can you get to the web interface? What hardware is it on? -
[sims] HELP!!!!! SIMS/FMS/DISCOVER migration.... fail!
3s-gtech replied to Koldov's topic in MIS Systems
Last time I did anything big with our on-site SIMS server, I ensured that ai had two things in place: It was a VM I had snapshots When I updated it from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2 it removed .NET, so broke. I reverted to the snapshot while I worked this out, then tried again. Reduced my stress levels massively. -
Don’t agree there, sorry. Often our install teams will put the mounts up in the first place, so there is competence required to do that properly. If a mount is built with a degree of technical competence, it will be sufficient - same with any install of kit in the school. Projector mounts aren’t going to be load tested in situ, so you have to use judgment. A piece of 3mm plate bolted up will not fail if done properly. Obviously, no bodges or cable tie nightmares.

When we first rolled out Windows 10, we’d be maxing out our connection often (100Mbit then). I installed a PFSense firewall to give me a better idea what was happening - it was hundreds of heavy calls to Akamai hosting telemetry, app updates etc. I thought I’d crushed all of that out of the image, obviously not. I actually bandwidth limited most of the CDNs they used, which sorted it. Never gave issues after that. Since going back through our policies, WSUS config and two versions of Windows 10 I was able to turn those limits back off, but we also have 1Gbit now.

That is absolutely fantastic. To update the innards with a Raspberry Pi would be perfection.

There's obvious ones, like TVs and phones, where the tech has shrunk but the UI has grown. No bad thing really. CPUs and graphics coolers have always been interesting; balancing heat, performance and noise levels. The old slotted and early socketed CPUs didn't suck a lot of juice - 20-25W was typical. GPUs at that time were limited by port power and bus capabilities, so didn't need to be as power hungry (especially when displaying at 800x600)! Still, Nvidia did create the FX5800 Ultra and who can forget the GeForce 480 (Fermi). Those suckers were hot! My contribution to the gist of the thread would be: laptops! Netbooks etc have really died off (perhaps thankfully so), but Ultrabooks etc don't seem to be around now. Kind of miss the innovative mini convertible/tablet/laptops of the 2000s like the HP TC1100.

Andrew Tate and school filtering
3s-gtech replied to sigma's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Showed as 'Celebrity' on our Smoothwall, as the ******** ******* category wasn't working. -
I experienced this many years back with a (very well known at the time) product that offered PDFs protected with third-party software that had to be installed. I wasn’t asked beforehand, it was bought, and I was dumped on. I tried to get it to work, but something there simply didn’t want to work with the way I had the PCs set up (I think it needed much slacker permissions for staff, and it needed Adobe Acrobat which was full of holes back then). I asked the developer, who shrugged and said that too many schools had stolen the PDFs. Fair. It got laid up and unused, the staff member installed it at home instead with our permission. It’s been policy since (written into our AUP).

On the disk Properties / Shadow Copy tab.
-
I had this recently with the database drive on my old Exchange server. Shadow copies wasn’t enabled, but checking the VSS settings for that drive showed a single recovery snapshot. I deleted that via the command line and I could then defrag and shrink the volume.

Pearson onscreen platform installation woes
3s-gtech replied to IT_Man_Dan's topic in Educational Software
The plain-Jane MSI installed without switches or transforms from the application server share - can't properly test it at present because the invigilator PC isn't logged on (exams officer for that!) so fingers crossed. -
Pearson onscreen platform installation woes
3s-gtech replied to IT_Man_Dan's topic in Educational Software
Just been asked to install this in a suite - we already have it, but it feels like even more of a throwback now. Why on Earth are they still using it?! Trying to get my head around unattended installation of it - I'm not doing it manually on 33 PCs. Times have moved on too much for that ****. -
SIMS server becomes unresponsive. Fine for a while after reboot.
3s-gtech replied to TwistedHelixis's topic in MIS Systems
SQL Server is supposed to hoover up RAM as it loads the DB into it. If you don't have a memory cap for the instance, it will take what it can get and potentially impact the server itself. Perhaps your SIMS DB has swollen and is now pushing the server's limits? -
I'd just started this job! Oh thread from the past, why didn't you warn me!
-
I don't think so - that sort of targeting only works on GPPs. You may be able to use WMI to target the GPOs though.
-
AOVPN or even an Azure setup can make this so much easier. The only potential cost with AOVPN is a server or VM to run it.

I destroy my finger tips all the time (welding, grinding etc) so had to disable TouchID on my phone as it never worked properly! [emoji28]

Mine was on audit mode already, by luck more than judgment!
