Yes, I should add - they should not be system admins. That's your role on a machine, and isn't necessary for any use cases here including when they're used at home with their own printers etc. While staff can install apps from the Store here, nothing else - it would be a security risk and a licensing headache.

We use a device profile with Always On VPN, so it works the same at home as in school. Same profile for both, and everything connects as it would (albeit slower). The profile is local, but it's not a local account. Redirection is used, but it just works - planning to migrate away from it to an extent so we now redirect Start Menus to a local copy of the folder. As long as your machines have a TPM 2.0 module, you just encrypt using that. No password required, unless it has a fit (sometimes turning it off and on again fixes that). You can have a password too, but little point. You can use Powershell, MDT build process or GP to store the Bitlocker key in the AD object - we use a PS script. They then show in the Bitlocker Recover tab.

Windows Server 2022 not download WSUS updates
3s-gtech replied to Theldron's topic in Windows Server 2022
WUfB is certainly better IME - I stuck with WSUS for a long time but it was labour intensive, unreliable and a massive storage black-hole. I don't miss it, and it was issues like this that finished it (then the database died for a second time). -
In theory. In practice, in MacOS 15, I couldn’t get it to work properly. I had to use Network Share Mounter and some additional profile gubbins (NSM has the profile extensions available, then I built a second profile package and imported it into JAMF) to even begin to get it to work. Even then, it sometimes only works on second logon. Not sure about AD group membership for that though. You’d need to pull that across into JAMF.

We use a decent quality hifi through speakers...
-
Windows Update can do it, we see that happen with new builds. Again though, I've seen that not work properly on Realtek cards (but be fine on other vendors' kit).
-
I agree; I wouldn’t fit a projector now apart from in our main hall. Ofsted won’t care though.

Just found out a friend got a ream of paper instead. Thieving scumbags. Wonder where the switch happened - guessing the warehouse?
-
That's absolute ********.

I mean - I understand you want them to start the years early (we sometimes do depending on the curriculum and being prepared) but what I meant was, you can’t just move them up a school year in SIMS, as the academic year sets that. You can trick it, as mentioned above, or you create an interim timetable where SIMS still sees the students in their normal year groups, but also in their new classes.
-
Don’t promote year groups. You’ll need to do this as a timetable with their current year groups, then re-do it for September with the new ones i don’t believe you can or want to promote them early!

Oh yes, unless you want Windows to be filled with airplanes, could care less, light beer and orange heads of state.
-
I replace with genuine. On older Samsungs, these were built into the toner cartridge and would be replaced with the toner - often when they weren't actually worn out. The cost of the cartridges was also outrageous (still is tbf). Actually reduces e-waste.

24H2 has had its issues, but it's what I jumped to here from Windows 10 22H2. Generally been a decent step. Some driver oddness, sorted in MDT. I didn't touch my MDT for it - still using an older version and it's solid. Quite a bit of looking through GP and retiring old policies, customising new ones etc to do.
-
Have a look at The same thing applies. You may find that the terms of the software state it shouldn't be used on a school PC. There are also tax, benefit, and school IT policy restrictions on this. Our answer here is 'no'. https://www.aqa.org.uk/information-for-examiners-and-moderators/tools-and-pc-requirements

Indeed, it's not a recommendation. I think I have one like that, and it's due for a new cab.
-
That’s the side-gig - the pocket money little earner. Not sure the Realtek ones are much good at that either!
-
We use the smaller desktop ones. 700VA (our switches are hungry!) With these, you can put them in the cab (or on top with care) close to the wall to reduce the torque pulling the cab down.
-
You had one job, wifi card. One job.
-
I've experienced similar. It's as if to get their products into OEMs they've undercut them on price, and done that by making something that barely works. Last real issues I had with them were back in Lenvo E series netbook things, which were slow anyway but the wifi was awful.
-
When ours are used without the fans on (despite the signs saying not to) and windows open they absolutely stink - ozone gives a chlorine-like smell, and you can smell the toner dust too. The guidance above is what you need. No-one should be working in the same small room as MFDs that are working all day IMO.

Planning out migration from Vmware to Hyper V
3s-gtech replied to m0bov's topic in Windows Server 2022
Honestly, I would migrate the DCs. I've done ESXi to Hyper-V, and I converted the VMs with various tools (which worked really well, though I then had to convert them to v2 VMs). I didn't do this with DCs though - those I just built fresh on Hyper-V and then moved over the roles. There's too many things that can go wrong or complicate this. -
MDT / WDS - ADK update for Windows 11 ??
3s-gtech replied to timbo343's topic in How do you do....it?
There may well be. As I don’t capture I haven’t encountered an issue with 24H2 that way. Do you strip anything from the build? -
You just have a dedicated virtual host that is absolutely not a server! No sir. Also, stick the case badges from a desktop over the model code on the case.
-
This is where a VM on a box comes in. You can still call yourself serverless if you want - when you absolutely must have a local instance, build the VM, use it, then archive it/switch it off. Ideal job for a microserver or similar - the licensing is another matter.
