  1. had an email notification from our NM that our update failed on Friday afternoon/evening. he didn't give much detail though.
  2. what freezing/chilling does is to make the disks to contract and create a little more space for movement. it sometimes works, it sometimes doesn't
  3. thanks gents. that'll do nicely.
  4. I'm sure there was a thread posted about screen capture software, but I can't find it. Does anyone know of any, preferably free, screen capture software along the lines of camtasia?
  5. We have our first meeting with our School Reorganistaion Manager scheduled for next week, so, having trawled the web for information and found nothing to get my teeth into, I've posted off my email to the Senior School Improvement Officer, covering the educational and ICT aspects of the of the project.
  6. We've been told that we need to have more machines (half a dozen or so) in each room as well as the IT suites. The IT suites are used for other subjects when not in use for ICT. D&T and Art have their own dedicated suites of 30 machines each. I do worry about the reliance on computers. We had one pupil whose account was disabled for a week, and she was told to use pen and paper, but when I saw her in class all she was doing was occasionally trying to log on and being informed that her account was disabled, which is all she'd done for 40 minutes. There was an interesting comment by a schools' examiner a few months back that pupils taking exams didn't have the experience of sitting down and actually writing for 1, 2, or 3 hours. They had the knowledge, but not the stamina.
  7. this may sound like asking for the earth, but could you get her to give you the questions asked, and to precis the survey results, and post them here so that we can all see them (if she doesn't mind)? computers at home has reared its head here as well.
  8. as we're all MS here, it'll come eventually, but not until at least SP1, and all the machines are up to spec.
  9. this was posted a few months back (I can't locate it now) but quite a few people found that using the manufacturers drivers for the wireless nic caused problems. the wireless nic drivers wouldn't load until until windows had loaded. catch 22. it was solved by letting windows configure the wireless card. it may well be that I'm barking up the wrong tree here.
  10. are you/they logging on wirelessly?
  11. which country are you in?
  12. you've got a framework to hang the content on tho' haven't you?
  13. if they know it's faulty and are passing it off as fit for purpose, then they are equaly, if not more, culpable. perhaps they'll return all the monies spent under the sale of faulty goods act
  14. it'll certainly apply to horizons. I think horizon 1 uses flash player 7 and the other two install flash player 8 and so overwrite the older version. if you follow my link and scan down about 3 posts you should see what I'm trying to point you to.
  15. you may find this helpful. it may not apply to just click tho'
  16. Netman, that's a powerful new site, very clean and straightforward. I hope you can find a place for the school illustration from the old site somewhere in the new
  17. @_Bat_: "So yeah, how long did you all spend building your own?" 62 hours. that doesn't include chasing staff for their contributions.

  19. The system I'm using is CMS Made Simple. It doesn't have as many bells and whistles as Joomla/Mambo, but it does the job as far as I'm concerned and doesn't take long to get the basic site up and running. It's php/mysql based, and the templates/stylesheets need configuring to get your site looking how you want it. It can also be revised/updated remotely, which led to me getting a b*ll*cking from my wife while on holiday in Italy, as I had to add some urgent news to the site (I hadn't had time to show anyone else how to use it by then). You can set up users on CMSMS so that they have less access than admin, which means they can change content without upsetting the design. As for what the site is for...it's for current and prospective parents/pupils, and it may also feature a 'Past pupils, where are they now, friends reunited' type section. It's to deliver information about the school (and eventually have a link to the VLE - just waiting for our new server). Not all the pages have information yet, and it's like getting blood out of a stone retrieving information from some heads of depts. for the site. If you hit the drop down menu you'll see what's on offer at the moment, even if there's no information available on the actual page. Education is a competitive business these days, and my view is that the website should look relatively professional and be in keeping with school colours/logos etc. After all, it's an outward facing publication available to anyone in the world with an internet connection.

    Ghost licencing

"With the old Ghost before multicasting .. If we had a BSOD we got the floppy for the PC and stuck it in and it booted and selected the image to Ghost Is this still possible in Ghost 8 and above (without starting a multicast) ?.." Assuming you mean Ghost8 corporate, then it should be possible. you use the Ghost Console (I'll double check that when I get in to work) EDIT: It's called the GhostCast Server, not the Console.

    New computers

while danIT is right that you can save a lot of money ( so long as you do the job for no pay ) by building your own, if a part of one goes wrong, which part is it, and was the part damaged by you? Sometimes it's easy to tell, and sometimes you have to go through quite a process to isolate the fault, then return the part. Most reputable companies these days will offer something like a return to base or better still, next day onsite warranty. We recently bought enough machines to fill a suite, plus a few hot swaps from Stone. There was a fault with one, Stone replaced it. End of story. Contink is right to get all the details nailed down as well. If you don't specify, their rules apply. "We have no extra network sockets in the suite would it be easy to install data cabinet with switch for all computers in suite (not me personally hopefully the electrician)" You can't have enough data points in my view (well, you can, but I hope you get my drift) always allow for extra if you can afford it. Again, get an electrician in to do the job properly if you can afford it. Otherwise, calculate how many hours you think the job would take you, treble it and add 7 hours.
  22. it's looking very thin at the moment, but I'll try later tonight when there's more time. thanks
  23. Lancs is where I live
  24. This the the text of an email I'm thinking of sending to our council. I'm wondering whether I should do this as an individual or through my union? I need to sort out the argument (in my head) before proceeding further. thanks. "I currently work as an ICT Technician at XXX XXX High School and greeted the news of BSF for our school with mixed feelings. There's a lot of talk around the country's schools regarding what is happening to ICT Technicians employed by those schools. Some LEA's seem to be letting the managed services companies take over the running of the schools' ICT provision, and with it, the staff currently employed by the schools. Others are allowing the Local Authority to bid for these services and keeping these staff "in house". Could you please let me know what Council's plans are for the provision of ICT services to schools in the Borough? Will there be a preferred bidder? Will schools be allowed to keep their own ICT Technicians, and what are the implications for funding should should the latter occur?"
  25. March 01? I was out that day. lol I can only stand here like a slack-jawed Kevin scratching my ba...(cont p.94)
