It is wrong, but I liken our plight to the female suffragette fighting for emancipation in England, or the coloureds of America in the '50's and '60's, and later their soul mates in apartheid South Africa, striving for equality. @Mark: I think you mean well, but my thoughts are that a sub-site will lead to an ironing "ghetto", where we can be hidden away for fear of causing embarassment. In fact, I'm getting all steamed up about this. strike while the iron is hot, I say...and this is where it all dribbles away as I run out of steam. I don't want to leave you board, but creased with mirth. You may say that we shouldn't hang our dirty washing out for all to see, though you're probably thinking that now is a good time to strip the wallpaper from the back bedroom. have to agree with Tony on most of that. We very rarely use our tumble drier. in summer I'll pop them in for 5 minutes or so, just to take the harshness out of towels which have hung in the sun (well, this is Rochdale) too long. And please, don't use fabric conditioner with towels either, they may feel soft but they lose up to 23% of their ability to absorb moisture. Fact. Unlike Tony, I do hang my shirts out on the line because I like the smell of freshness that no conditioner can give. Though I do like to bring them in and iron them while damp. They probably won't look as crisp as Tony's shirts, but it's a compromise I'm happy to make. Is there an ironing wiki?

I'm currently with PurpleCloud, who for £20 a year provide you with 4 msql databases and a host (geddit?) of preinstalled software ready to activate, such as Moodle/Mambo/Joomla. They've had some problems recently with moving to a new server, but things seem to be running smoothly now. I use them to try out various cms systems. If you need to know more, just let me know.

I think RM and the QCA are getting together to produce an embossed certificate, 100% recycled from old 25 metre swimming certificates that were found in the back of a cupboard a while ago. results were due out last Friday. Picked up ours first thing monday morning, and they didn't seem so bad, with most pupils reaching their predicted levels. ok, due to pressures on our head of ICT, and other ICT staff not being cooperative, we only ran the test for a group of 26 pupils, 22 of whom showed up on the day, but that's another story. haven't had a chance to read the summaries. how did the rest of you get on?

The developers of K9, BlueCoat are offering parents this free program that blacklists undesirable internet sites to help protect children on the web. It's American, but then again they did give us Robert Crumb and shark fin cars.

I couldn't get things (setting up a new mysql database for a start) to work with the gui, so re-installed the LAMP server again, did it command line, and voila! There's a database somewhere in there and I've got to access it. the LAMP server's not on any network at the moment (another reason for using the gui) so I'm wondering about just connecting peer to peer and learning how to do things remotely for the time being. I'm assuming that it all works similarly to any webhost which provides a database in that you log in to a control panel (would that be ipconfig?) and go on from there. another problem, of sorts, is that the server sits on the desk, just to the right of me, and it's just so easy to go over to it and work on it.

@Overworked: you might want to view this thread from the second page onwards. you're possibly a bit farther on than I am but you might find some useful stuff there.

@Webman: when I type in the first code you give I get "syntax error near unexpected token 'newline'" @ Joedetic: I hate to be a pain but when you say, "go to catalogues" where is that? came across this, as you do, while surfing this morning. apologies if this has already been mentioned. "Strictly speaking, obligations relating to provisions about benefits for old age, invalidity or survivors in employees' occupational pension schemes do not transfer under TUPE. However, the provisions of the Pensions Act 2004 sections 257 and 258 do apply to transfers taking place after 6 April 2005. In effect, this means that provisions equivalent to the TUPE regulations apply to pension rights from that date. In essence, if the previous employer provided a pension scheme then the new employer has to provide some form of pension arrangement for employees who were eligible for, or members of the old employer's scheme. It will not have to be the same as the arrangement provided by the previous employer but will have to be of a certain minimum standard specified under the Pensions Act."

I was impressed with the ease of installing the Dapper LAMP server. I didn't time it, but reckon it took around 20 minutes. but as far as linux is concerned I've still got on my water wings and rubber ring. apart from some basic ms-dos some years ago I'm afraid i've done everything via a gui. When I get round to sorting out a staff intranet i'm going to use W2K3 server and the free Sharepoint as that's got a room/resource booking add-on as well as a help desk. Though I hope to use the Dapper server for the school website and pupil intranet.

I don't know if you've got the full picture webman. I'm trying to set up a LAMP server using Dapper, I've limited time, and I'm happier working with a gui front end, hence ubuntu. In trying to transfer the files for the school's website into /var/www (it is the place to put these files, isn't it?) I get a popup telling me I haven't permission to do this. I assume, in command line, that the sudo bit of code is to move me up to the level of admin. My problem is how to do this through ubuntu. How do I log on as admin? Next job is to figure out how to set up a database. thanks for the time and patience.
