I also had a search this morning on the drupal site but not the moodle site and saw reference to a moodle module but couldn't locate one. Suddenly a lot of the SMT are wading in with 57 varieties of VLE for the school despite my having had one (moodle) up and running since February of this year. I do despair sometimes at the disjointed thinking behind all this. Do they equate "free" with "fallen off the back of a lorry"? Forgive me if I'm being ignorant, but it could be that when he creates the ghost boot disk, the drivername in the protocol.ini is blank whatever version of a broadcom nic it is.

This is a problem I had with broadcom nics - "What network card are using. You don't have have a Dell with a Broadcom NIC by any chance? I've just been imaging 15 Stone laptops with broadcom nics, and when it came to creating the boot disk the protocol.ini file was incorrect, in that it had a blank space where the drivername should be, i.e. "[protman] drivername=PROTMAN$ [pktdrv] drivername=PKTDRV$ bindings=nic intvec=0x60 chainvec=0x66 [nic] drivername = [this space was blank]" it should have had B44$, without the brackets, for the Broadcom 440X 10/100. worked fine after that. I've never had this problem before creating a boot disk."

I may not have all the conversation down pat, but the person telling me this definately used the word "recommend", and I believe them, nor have any reason to doubt them.

I was told the following by someone at the North West Education Technology Show last week, "It's unlikely that BECTA will recommend Moodle because it doesn't provide a helpdesk. However, that doesn't mean to say that Moodle can't be used. No single system meets all the criteria." Now I may have got some of the words slightly wrong, but that's the gist of what I was told. I don't know how much input BECTA expects techies to have in the running of VLE's, but the helpdesk idea suggests to me that they don't expect us to have much, if any. Personally, I'd like to see more involvement from teachers. *Edit* I've just noticed this from Mikr Berry in the Members Who Blog section. Serendipity.

can I bump this? A member of SMT came in this afternoon saying he wanted to run "radio" broadcasts (recorded by management, I assume) over the network during morning and afternoon registration, and have pupils pre-record a cast for lunch sessions. He asked me to look into it, and my first thought was podcasting. Any other suggestions? I've searched the posts, and there's a reasonable amount of stuff to be getting on with, but was wondering if anyone had gone any farther than the previous post. Ta.

As I said, my daughter's school is already Foundation. As part of the reorganisation a local RC school is to have it's 6th form closed. They need to close some of these 6th forms in order to make the 6th form college (which has yet to be built) a success, of sorts. The daft thing is that a secondary school with falling rolls has had the requisite £2 million input from a local businessman, so will be rebuilt as an academy, keeping its 6th form. It may be that the council are blustering, but they won't have much of a battle judging by the turnout. I must make it clear that I don't work at this school

I attended a meeting at my daughter's Foundation/GM school a couple of weeks ago. The Council want to close the 6th form, and those of a few other schools to build a larger 6th form college. When I asked about the Foundation status, the council rep said that the government would simply stop the funding for our 6th form.

sorry to read that markcuk. It can't be a pleasant working environment. Whichever school I've worked in the head or one of the deputies has always told me/us that we're staff, and he expects us to be treated accordingly. There are one or two teachers who you suspect may be condescending towards you, but everyone feels the pressure from time to time, just try and make allowances. the techies here don't go into the staff room for tea/coffee etc for 3 very good reasons. Our office is at the other end of the school from the staff room, we're usually working anyway, or, someone would ask you about their computer/laptop etc at home. Otherwise, if somebody's leaving or retiring, we go down for the speech and presentation. You'll get a lot farther as a team.

stat counter works for me. the free version only gives you the last 100 hits of the day, but it does give you the OS, the IP address, the country, first time or returning visitor etc

Has anyone tried this Moodle plugin? It's a CMS plugin which integrates your website into Moodle, if I'm not mistaken.

My youngest daughter wants to go on to study physics and then work for NASA.

One of the things I like about the images is the way the Moon module is a blaze of colour in such a black and white landscape, almost as if someone had joined the two together in Photoshop. Hang on a minute, you don't think..? No, it's not possible, I remember staying up most of the night to watch the first lunar landing. Mind you, the pictures were so bad I could have been watching a haggis on a pile of mashed potato.

On a more serious note, such large reductions in salary would make it more attractive for private companies to take (tupe) our jobs.

I'm going to suggest to SMT that all members of staff do not approach techies in corridors, or "pop in", as they were "just passing" our office (it's at the end of a corridor), but that they can only phone us for help, and everything has to be done remotely. Keep that up for a fortnight.

what freezing/chilling does is to make the disks to contract and create a little more space for movement. it sometimes works, it sometimes doesn't Are there any other tricks or tips like that which would also help ?
