I'm afraid I wasn't joking. OFSTED could very well see this as one ready made assessment of skill levels, so why not use it?

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. The KS3 tests may have been the bane of many a techie, but the planning of how it should be delivered wasn't necessarily cock-eyed. RM's method of downloading the tests to a server and then the actual machines may seem a bit belt and braces, but when I did my exams I wouldn't have liked to go into them with only one pencil and no sharpener (ok, slate and chalk). You have to have backup in these situations. Look at the uproar caused when some examination authority looses/mislays completed exam papers. The exams are there to serve the pupils after all, and for a lot of them it's a stressful time.

This could well be true. OFSTED inspectors could decide that the tests are a good way of assessing pupil development in ICT, so why aren't you using them? Don't uninstall anything yet

you need to partition your hdd into C: and D: drives, then either format the drives as fat32 (or get a boot disk that works with ntfs). copy your i386 folder to your D: drive. you can convert to ntfs later.

It's always a good idea to search the forums first, if you haven't already done so.

Right, after following your advice, I've gone through the setup without a hitch and have now bookmarked the home page. We have NetSupport School Pro here, obviously doesn't have the bells and whistles of NSM, but a useful tool all the same. The one point I would highlight is that SchoolPro (I don't know if it applies to NSM) can be run from a pupil's pen drive, if your security settings aren't correctly set (ahem).

I've a dual core laptop on which I'm trying to install WSS 3 via Virtual PC. Everything seemed to be working well, until I got the following error message, "System.Data.SQLClient.SQLException was thrown....Cannot open Database "WSS_Search_WSS_Server" Is the database created during the install of WSS 3, or do I have to set it up myself, and if so, how?

bought a shirt in the sales a couple of days ago which had the perfect logo for Edugeek at BETT

@ alan-d that worked a treat eventually. tried it at home, pasted above into httpd.conf file, no luck, restarted computer, no luck double-checked, no luck. brought laptop into work this morning, NM manager asks how I got on, preparing excuses as it boots, open browser, click on localhost/moodle expecting zilch and Edugeek be praised! it's a miracle. I'll take the laptop home tonight and see what happens there. @webman, thanks once again for all your behind the scenes work. One of the many unsung heros here on Edugeek.
