We do it as part of the image I'm afraid. Haven't really looked into any other way of doing it, and as a my wife says, I shouldn't be doing this as I'm on holiday.

Thanks for those replies. I wrote to my MP last year asking him to sign the EDM regarding OpenSource, which he was only too glad to do. However, he's also a local councillor who enthusiastically supports BSF. I'm looking for evidence/arguments to put before him and point out what Managed Services might mean for our LEA schools. If anyone else can offer evidence or thoughts on this I'd be very grateful.

Does anyone have any experience of the type of software "managed" schools have to run? Is opensource being thrown out in favour of proprietorial software, or are the companies cool about this?

Our LA ICT support team were taken over/tupe'd last year, and as they provide SIMS services and manage the servers/networks for all of the primary schools in our LEA (a few primaries have clubbed together to employ their own techies), the primary sector, has in all but name, become a service managed by a private company. How much consultation there has been, I don't know. The team also provides SIMS support for at least 12 out of our 14 secondary schools. This is a service we used to "buy in" when they were a LA ICT team, and as I'm not a party to these types of contract tenders, I have no idea if prices are rising, or if there is competition. I do know that the level of SIMS support they provide is of a very high standard.

I think you mean take back into public ownership, Witch. I used to live in Sheffield in the late '70's and '80's, where public transport was subsidised. Buses were frequent, with major routes running 24 hour services, clean and usually no more than two years old. They also had conductors on board, which meant that once all passengers were aboard the bus could move along, rather than wait for the driver to collect the fares. The conductor generally ensured there was less trouble on board. And then came the free for all, with anything up to 80 buses per hour on the High Street, just in one direction. Some of these vehicles were a danger to life and limb. You have to ask yourself the question, what is public transport for? Is it there to make a profit for the owners, or is it a very good means of getting as many people as possible to work as cheaply, and efficiently, as possible?

@localzuk: can I recommend you have a look at BECTA's FITS (Framework for ICT Technical Support) Guidelines?

This is a direct cut 'n' paste from the BECTA guidelines - "More advanced systems, often called virtual learning environments (VLEs) These offer more sophisticated tools such as learner support (course information, tutor support, live mentors, peer support), learner tools (such as tools to create web pages), management and tracking of learneractivity, and more highly developed assessment tools. Managed learning environments (MLEs) These are comprehensive systems where the VLE and the school management information systems (MIS) and other programs (such as finance or staffing systems) can share data and exchange information. It is intended that all schools will ultimately have access to an MLE." Hopefully, this will give a basic idea of the difference VLE and MLE.

some of us don't have a budget. Each faculty comes to us with their individual IT needs, we source the most cost effective/reliable product, and they pay the bill.

Now we are on the subject... why? I tested my website in three browsers... I think it's because (for those of us who work in LEA schools) we come under the local government umbrella, and like other publicly funded bodies, we have to provide things like, and this is stretching the comparison, the equivalent of wheelchair access.

Yeah, spend a load of money putting someone through their MCSE then 6 months later they are off to a higher paying job in industry. School is left with a custom system that nobody else can manage. > ..er..your school pays for training? on a serious note, schools are going to have a problem as techies try to get funded training before BSF hits, and then jump. so don't spend any money on them. keep them in penury. encourage them to have large families, after all, they won't have a pension when they retire so they'll need someone to support them. after a while just the electric sound of the whip crackling through the air will be enough to restore order. no need for actual violence. mental cruelty is so much more satisfying, don't you think?
