  1. How about Spice Works It gone go off and pick up hardware information. I've tried it on our network however it looks like NEC have not put their serial number in the serial number section, so when i query a machine i get a complete different number shame reall becuase we could have gone from no asset management to a great deal! I've got some other utils at work for this, I'll check them out Monday to see if there any good! Robert
  2. Didn't know where to publish this! Just had Dot ICT in for a week and tbh they were very good! Shaky start with them not picking the server up, but once it was picked up they get me up to date with it and even brought it back early! I've been working with them all week and the guys were really good, they've done the August update and SQL migration for us! So far it still appears to be working. Any requests I've had for settings to be changed on work stations was done, they had some good ideas (even though they weren't too keen on Ranger) I've heard some stories about them but I've found working with them was the best way, I answered all their questions and they did all the requested tasks! There coming back in a weeks time to work with the network manager, so next week I shall mostly be testing SIMS out with Ranger and hopefully deploying it! Robert
  3. Sorry I don't think i'm doing it right :? I ran the file and it just opened and closed, didn't as for anything. Here's a copy of the batch @echo off if "%1" == "" goto :usage SubInAcl /FILE "%WINDIR%\SIMS.INI" /GRANT=%1=F SubInAcl /KEYREG HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes /GRANT=%1 SubInAcl /KEYREG HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID /GRANT=%1 SubInAcl /KEYREG HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface /GRANT=%1 SubInAcl /KEYREG HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\TypeLib /GRANT=%1 if "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%" == "" goto :skip_simsapps SubInAcl /FILE "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\SIMS Applications\*.*" /GRANT=%1=F SubInAcl /FILE "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\SIMS Applications" /GRANT=%1=F SubInAcl /SUBDIRECTORIES "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\SIMS Applications\*.*" /GRANT=%1=F SubInAcl /SUBDIRECTORIES "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\SIMS Applications" /GRANT=%1=F goto :after_profile_warning :skip_simsapps echo. echo ** WARNING: The Environment Variable for All Users Profiles is not set on this pc, echo ** cannot grant permissions for the SIMS Applications Program Folder. echo. :after_profile_warning if "%ProgramFiles%" == "" goto :skip_simsdir SubInAcl /FILE "%ProgramFiles%\SIMS\*.*" /GRANT=%1=F SubInAcl /FILE "%ProgramFiles%\SIMS" /GRANT=%1=F SubInAcl /SUBDIRECTORIES "%ProgramFiles%\SIMS\*.*" /GRANT=%1=F SubInAcl /SUBDIRECTORIES "%ProgramFiles%\SIMS" /GRANT=%1=F goto :after_simsdir_warning :skip_simsdir echo. echo ** WARNING: The Environment Variable for the Program Files Folder is not set on this pc, echo ** cannot grant permissions to the SIMS Application Folder. echo. :after_simsdir_warning goto :end :usage echo. echo "Usage simsperm [domain]\ or simsperm [domain]\" echo. :end
  4. Hey guys! Currently got dot ict install SIMS for us, one thing they mentioned was making users Power Users on workstations where SIMS is installed. They run a program that, runs a couple of bat files to set permissions on files/folders/registry on the local PC. This then allows Powers Users to modifiy these. A few of you have mentioned that all is needed is to run simsperm.bat now this is probably a really easy question but what do i need to modify in this file for it to successfully work for a specific group? Robert
  5. I've got myself a Mini Cooper S, its nice a quick but can a right PITA on speed humps. I have to slow it right down. It went into BMW for a couplpe of bits over the weekend and I requested a 3 series saloon diesel for my dad to try as he's due a new car. They gave me a 325 coupe lol. It was a nice car, my mini felt quicker but it did sounds nice! It was nice to get my mini back this morning. BMW's seem to have a really long clutch, i had an X3 it was great for Ikea but the clutch just got annoying Robert
  6. The two networks are seperate, just connecting to our room for net access. Cheers Tony I'll give you a call Tuesday if thats ok? Robert
  7. Cheers guys, I shall add this to my calendar reminder about the batch file. We had an idea to give permission to the SIMS folders but didn't think about the registry entry! Does anyone else have any helpful comments/suggestions lol I'm trying to fully prepare myself! Robert
  8. Howdy all! As of September Bromcom is going and we are moving to SIMS for our registration/attendance needs! DOT ICT have been 'consulting' SMT and the Bursar with regards to the best procedure, I explain what is happening and would welcome any comments and advise! Personally I have not had hardly any dealings with DOT ICT so I shall approach their work practices and attitude with an open mind! During August DOT ICT will take our Admin server off site to rebuild and bring back to add as a member Server to the curriculum domain (Currently we only work on the curric domain DOT ICT and the Bursar control sorry work on the Admin domain) Once the server is rebuilt DOT ICT will come in add the server as member to the curric domain and add all Admin PC's to it! During this process they are installing a new managed switched as well. The next phase is for them to come in and install SIMS on teachers PC (and supposedly show us how to install SIMS) Come September in theory all PC's and Servers should be up and running! Our Bursar has decided that the Server will stay in the Admin section of the building, where she will manage back-ups and all issues relating to SIMS (Currently we have about 15 users, this will jump to about 100) Also we are running Ranger on all Curric PC's, it has been advised that this not be installed on any Admin machines. Secondly DOT ICT recommend we make all teachers Power Users for the local machine as well, just wondering does anyone run SIMS and Ranger and also do we really need to make them Power Users? Regards Robert
  9. We get a problem with those 'Smart' Shortcuts! We had it with most of the Macromdia Suit. We re-created the shortcuts from the executable itself. Also we decided that the Contribute wasn't required by teachers or students, and they were only using to get round Ranger Remote Control internet blocks Robert
  10. We use Ranger to redirect our start menu's however were are getting a problem where the start menu/button freezes. This happened on our old NT4 domain (now 2003) both running Ranger. We've googled a lot and tried several different solutions but none have worked. When I log in I get the local start menu and this problem does not exist. PS. Sorry to high jack this thread, but a teacher was asking about this today and this thread reminded me of this! Robert
  11. Is Virgin available within your area? If so have you tried approaching them as it could be a good PR exercise for them! A launch night where parents are invited and it will allow Virgin to flog their services to these parents. Or this could take place with any broadband supplier! Robert
  12. For all those people who are using EMBC as there broadband supplier, do any of you report sites to be blocked either via phone or e-mail? I I'm asking because recently we've had a lot of kids discovering new proxy sites and I appear to be e-mailing them daily with 2 or 3 sites to be blocked. The good thing is these are usally blocked within 10mins to an hr! Robert
  13. We had Ofsted here Wednesday/Thursday. We just passed and for all our hard effort we had Pizza and drinks (Well i had orange and lemonade! I had to drive home!) in the staff room on Friday! The funniest part was the build up when the head annouced the school will be staying open till 8pm for teachers to prepare. I had a phone call around 6ish just when the power goes off to all the PC's! lol asking me how could teachers get back on! As I'm at the bottom of the pile in terms of personel I get to hear everything last (Plus our department is the least liked!) my ideas always get passed over! Sorry about the ffs rant! Robert
  14. Just found this on the reg! This on the register! (nice sub heading 'school of BOFH'!) Robert
  15. What about plugging the hard disk into another machine to restore the damaged file? Robert
