I need a gui so that I can get a decent picture in my mind of how things are laid out. It's just how I work. Managed to get Ubuntu installed and working and can now see where everything goes, however, I don't have permission to put the files in the /var/www. how do I log on as admin?

it's not working for me. I'll search some forums in the meantime.

I managed to get kubuntu installed by running the command sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop (not desktop-kubuntu, as one of the Dapper forums said), and I ran the apt-get update command as well, but the server still boots into command line mode. There seems to be no way of getting into gui mode. Any suggestions?

OK so loads of kids are off on trips, those who have sat or are sitting exams (year 11) are away, so it's quiet. I've downloaded and installed LAMP Server Ubuntu/Debian version Dapper, v.6.06 (I think) on a very old slow machine, but it's all command line and I'm happier with a gui I visited the ubuntu forums and saw a lead saying to run the command "sudo apt-get install desktop-ubuntu" (or whatever flavour of desktop you had) I can't get this to work. At first I assumed that the gui stuff would be on the original cdrom, but it appears not. I tehn downloaded the Kubuntu iso, burnt that and tried with the command again but still no joy, though it runs as a live cd without any problems. Any advice on this?

just an update, and for the interest of anyone who may be in the same situation as myself, I'm currently running Apache2Triad on an XP Pro machine. I'd like to thank Sysman here for his help. No matter what I did I couldn't get any of the systems reccommended, including Apache2Triad, to run on the trial server in school the way they did on my machine at home, so I wiped the server, installed XP Pro and the first app out of the box, which was Apache2Triad. It was easier to configure than I imagined, and that may have been the problem, as in, "No, it can't be that simple. I must have missed a step or something" I managed to get a dump of the database from my webserver but couldn't import it into my new database without error messages. I did a quick install of a fresh copy of CMS Made Simple, replaced the existing style sheets with those from the website and cut'n'pasted the content from the old pages into the new ones. The job was done in 30 minutes or so. I'd like to say that I'll have time to play with Ubuntu (it is gui based by the way isn't it?) in the summer break, but from what I've been told that won't be likely. thanks to all again for your help

I'm currently using this CMS for the school website. I'm in the process of moving the unfinished site from the hosting company I use to a school based machine. The cms itself is quite easy to use, but there are gaps in the help files which can lead to loss of hair. Get in touch if you decide to go down this route. You can create user accounts that only have the access to add, remove or update content without damaging the layout. PurpleCloud moved to a new server recently and they've been having intermittent problems which are hopefully sorted out now.

It depends who you're flying with as well. I don't know of a ban on dvd devices, but most airlines these days, or at least the ones I've travelled on, have back-of-seat lcd screens which show in flight movies nnngrrr films. The flight should be somewhere around 3 1/2 hours. Give them the window seat, especially if you're travelling during daylight hours. there's a quite a lot goes on during flights these days, which may hold their attention. but the stuff they do normally to pass the time at home is usually good enough. chances are they'll fall asleep. Be prepared for it to be hot when you get there, plenty of high factor sunblock, drink regularly, water of course. And most Germans will be at home watching the world cup, so the chances are that you'll get a sun lounger. beeswax

who's seeing to the school's IT needs while you sell usb drives and do the paperwork?. Surely it's obvious that it's easier, and best practice, to keep financial dealings as close to Admin as possible? Cut out the middle man, yourself. It 's an admin job as far as I'm concerned. You don't need resource committee meetings to decide on the everyday priorities of IT provision. One of the roles of the resource committee is 'blue sky' thinking, that is, for the future, and how best to deploy your present resources, not to prioritise repair jobs. It's a waste of their time and yours. On the plus side, it's also a good thing that you're included in these meetings, as many techs (cough) are not. Time spent here is time spent away from doing what you are supposed to do. You know what the priorities are in any one week better than anyone else, and sometimes these jobs are not obvious to the layman. When I was freelance (photographer) I was given some advice, "Unless you like messing with cars, take it to a garage to have it seen to. Your time is more precious, and profitably spent, by doing your job." Hope that helps, and if you're ever in the region again, there's a rag pudding with your name on it. beeswax

Well, and forgive me for being so forward, the girl in the middle should have worn a blouse to cover up that tattoo. bit of a no-no in the office don't you think? you may think that there's very little to choose between the two young lovelys flanking Miss Essex, but you'd be wrong. Just scrutinize the lady on the left, the subtle application of makeup, and of course the moustache. Nothing wrong with a tache on a young gel y'know. See how much care and attention she must have spent keeping that trimmed and in peak condition. I would say that this young lady would be an adornment to any office. So take heart Russ.

I should forget about the film scanning facility in most scanners, unless you're prepared to pay real money. The top-end Minolta Dimage and Nikon Coolscan come to mind. For scanning documents/pictures the Epsons are no bad deal.

I made similar enquiries last September/October/November regarding using linux based server(s) to host the school's website, and looked at several, including Debian. My worry, ok, my NM's worry, is security. If I have a machine running Ubuntu server to host our website (and eventually our moodle intranet) within the school, how do I go about securing it? thanks again for your time

I'm currently hosting our school's website (what there is of it) in my own webspace so that I could get my head around CMS Made Simple. the Head has now sent a newsletter out saying that the new site will be up and running in 2 weeks, so look out for it. My host uses linux servers with mysql and php and the databases mostly set up. As you can guess, I want to try and replicate this on our W2K server in house. I could do with some help with this, or it's off to the east wing with a pearl handled revolver. beeswax

I've had a request from a teacher who deals with, for want of a better phrase, "the slower learners". What she would like is that when these pupils log on to the network, the machines they are sitting at display larger text, the mouse cursor and the double click is slower. Generally speaking, she wants the machines enabled so that any pupil with learning difficulties finds it easier to use the machine they're sitting at. W2K3 server XP Pro machines SP2.

I recommended our school buy a Nikon D50 as it's what I use. although the link I've included is to Jessops, that's for information only. I'm sure you can scout around for a better deal. When I bought mine, with a 28mm-55mm and a 70mm-300mm lens and 1gig of memory, it cost me over £800, earlier this year, Jessops (of all people) were offering the camera and 28mm-55mm lens for something under £360, and throwing in the 70mm-300mm for free, I couldn't work out if they were also offering any memory, as I'd been sick over the ad. Having worked as a professional smudge for 25 years in sometimes demanding conditions, I had a good idea what I was looking for. It's not a "true" pro camera, you're talking 4 figures there, but it handles well, the pictures are clear, it has a hotshoe for mounting a larger flash unit, and there are probably more than enough functions for daily use. hope this helps.

we're hoping to run the school's website from a dedicated server in (a dmz) in school. it will be built on a MySql database via a CMS. it will need to be backed up regularly. any suggestions?
