have you got a similar machine(s)? if so, copy an image from one that works to the one presenting the problems. it worked before.

if you haven't done this already, ensure that the "Users" group has Read, Read & Execute and List Folder Contents on the following drives and folders, E:\ E:\Program Files E:\Program Files\School Applications where E: is the drive where you've installed the APS software.

what I've done so far is set up a moodle site in my own webspace, and given the IT savvy teachers a login to their departments and let them have a play. It's early doors yet but I'm getting some good input, and learning stuff for myself. Word of mouth is the next step, then when I have a good idea of how this moodle thing works I'll try and set up the full site.

well I've just run a power point presentation thru OO without any problems. had the head of ict look through the excel equivalent, and she reckoned it had all the features needed to do the coursework required. I've used it myself for word docs without any probs, keeps formatting etc. of course you can save it as a word doc from OO and open it in word, same with all the others. can't help with movie files tho.

I am logged in with an Admin account, or at least it's called User Admin

I don't have Admin => Site Settings => Front Page Format => Show Arbitrary HTML or activities. My list contains News Items, List of Courses, List of Categories and Topics. I'm using Moodle v.1.5.3

does anyone know how to create the centre section of a moodle site front page as text only? no forums, news or category lists. I just want to have a general welcome massage. what I've found on moodle hasn't been too helpful.

that's Sims On Line Update Service, or something similar. I'm afraid I can't help you with the finance package though.

thanks sahmeepee, I didn't make my point clearly there. if you're on a network then you should use the connect.ini on the sims server/drive

ok. on the bursar's machine you need to map a drive to the drive with the sims stuff on, then dig down to sims>setups>simsinst.exe (it's a funny blue icon like an inverted comma) get this started and just follow the default instructions/steps. it'll need to reboot during this operation. once rebooted start sims and log in. at this point a window will open asking for the connect.ini file. you'll have 2 choices so go with the top one and browse to the sims folder where you should find it, select connect.ini and, apart from any updates, that should be it. I'll keep an eye on this post to see if you need any more help

but more seriously..I was discussing this with our senior IT Techie this afternoon just before the bromcom rep came in. he said the old bromcom system used to daisychain its wireless access points around schools, and if one failed, they all failed. I once had some small dealings with a company called flexsys who were hoping to do this on a sometimes grand scale, town centres for example, though they certainly did hotels etc. you might get some ideas by visiting the link. beeswax
