Looks good for remote admin especially if your not a WMI scripting geek but it does not have the classroom specific features (web & app blocking etc, lesson plan, quizes etc). Remember this is going to be used by teachers and so has be straightforward. good points - thanks for that. beeswax

I did see this in action once - GoverLan - and it seemed pretty neat.

there used to be a course sponsored by the government called Ambition IT details of which could be found at job centres. the idea was to get more people into IT (it worked for me). I don't think the exact same courses are available now, but I do know that the place i trained in manchester, CG Resources, is still going and training people in IT (ok, it's not on your doorstep, but there may be something similar near you). Check with your job centre. It was a 12 week course when i did it, setting up and running a network, with a couple of city and guilds exams at the end of it. all pretty basic stuff, but then again, I expected to begin in a pretty basic post. I was 49 at the time and had a bit of a struggle to get on the course, but the door wasn't locked, just a little tight, so to speak. beeswax

I think much depends on your position in school. If , like me you're on the level of a techie, you may not get the same access to SMT as the NM. However, any NM worth his/her salt would involve you as you're the one who'll be going into classrooms and trying to implement these policies. Your experience here is vital. Then there's the question of what your ICT Policy will cover, damage to machines/equipment, and inappropriate use of the internet are two which come to mind. The former will definately affect you, and the latter depends on the pupils' use of the inetrnet being monitored, and who is delegated to do the monitoring. At my school I do this via Net Support software. A pupil visits a "dodgy" site for example, I spot it, take a screen grab, find out who it is, disable the account, letter home to parents with printout, parents have to contact school, and pupil has to apologize. I'm allowed to use my own judgement in this, and, of course, I don't do the letter home bit. If you don't have defined roles you may find yourself doing that. Remember, if you don't have your finger in the pie, you won't get any gravy. As they say here in... Nurse! Where am I?

we use netsupport here, it's pretty good and seems to push all the buttons you want. My only gripe is that it doesn't tell you who's actually logged onto a machine. beeswax

this may be off subject, but I've been asked to investigate some feedback software for the parents,/pupils survey which is due in the next couple of months. moodle has a feedback module which seems to work quite well, though I forsee problems with parental user authentication. does anyone have any other ideas as to useful software. I feel like I'm chasing my tail at the moment.

is there a possibility of drawing two threads together here? the LEA's seem to want their own area within edugeek. no doubt they'd sell themselves as would anyone offered a spot here. Edugeek are now offering free training seminars. how much easier/better would it be to get LEA recognition (they seem to be making overtures towards us) of these courses, and the funding to attend them? I've just re read the above, does it make sense? damn tin foil

we start our year 7 pupils off with the same password, 1 to 5, and then force them to change it at first logon. I worked in a place where staff were given the chance to change pupils passwords, and one teacher changed them all to "dog", which is the same as having no password at all. As you can imagine, folders started to disappear from pupil areas, work was copied and presented as their own work etc. but then again, I work in a secondary school. beeswax

I should have put this in my first reply, have you tried "formally" stopping the services, net stop "tomcat" and net stop "postmaster" before restarting? It worked for me until yesterday. I've been logging on to the APS 2 or 3 times a day to check the connection (because of building work I haven't been able to get much more done, and of course the head asked the fateful question yesterday as well, "how's the website coming along?") but yesterday I couldn't log on, firstly timed out, and then a 404. postgres and tomcat both running on the server. I ran an audit and have emailed it off to RM so that they can compare it with an earlier version sent a couple of weeks ago. I don't know if it's going to tell them anything. beeswax

At my last school all the training materials were on the staff intranet, and the staff intranet was the default home page for all staff. it may have changed since I left. beeswax

Can't remember where do you download the test from?" the tests are pushed out to you from the qca, manually, via wheelbarrow, and this can take 48 hours, as some bus drivers won't let passengers on with wheelbarrows unless they, the qca, pay the additional extra baggage fee. I believe high level negotiations are underway as I write between the qca and the pensioners association, in order to develop a cohort of fit and healthy pensioners willing to take on the task of delivering these tests via wheelbarrow on the nations buses. only those with free bus passes need apply. beeswax

I don't think it's Sophos, unless Moorside has changed its AV software. Does everyone who has posted to this site use server 2003 with XP Pro clients? Is there a common thread here?
