in my view, and from what I've come across in the past, I think it's better to have an opt-in. If you go down that path then you can have an AUP (Acceptable Use® Policy) which details what the pupil can and cannot do, the responsibilities of all parties, and the knowledge that the pupil will be aware that his/her internet usage will be monitored, and where appropriate, recorded. There's a thread to do with this somewhere on the site. I'll have a look for it later. beeswax

Keep an eye on tomcat, and more especially postmaster. once I'd got past the registration part of the setup I had several problems not being able to log on to the APS. Discovered with the help of people here and RM that postmaster had stopped running. You then have to stop tomcat and restart postmaster followed by tomcat. always in that order. do this from cmd net stop "postmaster" (same for "tomcat") then net start "postmaster" (same again for "tomcat") good luck beeswax

as I recall, changing the css styles is pretty straightforward, so long as you stick to changing colours. be careful if you want to change font size though (I think this applies to liberum - tried quite a few helpdesks and can't remember if it was liberum) as it has a fixed width table. I would have gladly sent a 1000 blank pages to the colour laser printer, opened a panel and fed in the end of my tie, knowing that by page 63 I would have been all over (pages 7 to 63). Those of you who work during school holidays know that they're often the busiest times of the year, and so it came to pass that this past February half term week was one of the busiest I've ever had to handle. In short, we had joiners, electricians, cablers, IWB installers, the chap who maintains our a/c dropped in unannounced on Thursday, while I re-imaged all the IT suites, and for good measure we had staff and pupils in wanting to use computers. We were told that everyone would be finished by end of day Thursday. As it happened it was 1440 hrs on Friday before the last man left and we could get on with moving stuff back into place. Despite being contracted to work until 1530 I stayed until about 1640, wiping down surfaces, moving computers, monitors etc. I've got a stinking cold and I'm not going in today to do overtime for which I won't get paid, or be able to take time off in lieu. Here's the rub, when I get back in on Monday I'm going to have to face some angry staff asking why their rooms look like a bomb's just hit them. And as I was lying in bed coughing and spluttering this morning I thought, "Well, the chaps (and chapesses) could help me come up with a really decent excuse!" I'm looking for something original, and hopefully, funny. Excuses along the lines of, "The dog ate my homework." are not acceptable. An Edugeek cup or T-shirt for the winner beeswax

has anyone booked this company to install their IWB's in the near future? We had them in this week (half term) to install 9 boards, projectors etc. I've no problem with the people doing the actual, but it appears that last week they made about 90% of their staff redundant. We were expecting 4 fitters to arrive tuesday, one turned up monday. After ringing round they managed to find a couple of fitters from kent, or somewhere down south like that who spent the thursday night in digs so that they could turn up for work before lunch time. another fitter was called out to go to york last night, so he only came in to collect his tools this morning. it goes on. beeswax

just a couple of points - 1. has anyone gone all the way with this? that is, fully installed and running on all the machines it should? if so, could you give me, and anyone else interested, a rough breakdown of your server/client makeup please (slowest/fastest cpu etc)? 2. I'm currently in limbo regarding postmaster's erratic behaviour. I was sent some further instructions from second level support last weekend which I carried out and emailed the results back to them. I'm still awaiting a reply, so I haven't moved forward in the past 7 days. As for the Becta Community site, I would say, "Oi! Becta, no! You might be a fully government funded agency which thinks nothing of wallpapering your offices with £50 notes. But think again before luring these innocent young techies onto the rocks of KS3 accreditation with your siren voices!" @petectid - right, it's taken some time but I've managed to get round to reading it through once (it'll take a couple more times for it to fully sink in, but that's the way I'm made). I don't want to get into detail here, but I asked myself this, "Though my preliminary conclusions were extrapolated from my experiences in a few schools, they fit the general mould of the conclusions drawn in the Ofsted report, so what has changed?" Because my short piece echos the HMI review shouldn't make it any less relevant (I don't think you were implying this, by the way). In some respects, there is nothing new to say since the report was published in May 2004, because it seems to me that very little has changed, and that's a reason we shouldn't stop saying it. Edugeek is no longer a disparate group of a few like minded individuals, it's now a crucible for ideas, as well as the usual geeky stuff. I'm not talking crusades here, I don't want to get into that again, but we can be an influence on decision makers, even if only at a local level. My own head of IT takes any comments made in these posts that I draw her attention to, seriously and with due consideration. It's no longer just me saying, "Hang on, we can't go down that route just yet. It needs to be investigated before you part with any money." I can generally back this up with a few print-outs from Edugeek. Can I add here that the general moderate tone of the (well informed) comments helps. She hasn't visited FFS that I know! Perhaps we can password protect that section? I'm not alone, and that makes me feel a whole lot better as I turn up for work each day.
