Then Windows laptops or any tablet Android/IOS device really. Office 365 -- you have Azure to cloud manage your AD and whatever policies you wish to deploy. MDM - I'd look at Microsoft Intune or Cisco Meraki or a hybrid of both as a starter. (Not used Intune much but it's a bit flaky from my experience). EDIT: Don't forget MDM solutions are an implementation of the OS manufacturers management platform. e.g. Ipads have a much more limited MDM scope that say Windows does. Depends on what you're trying to achieve.

I hear ya. I think BYOD for students is totally unworkable. Staff?... maybe. Your SLT need to wise up. It's not a sensible scenario and it will fail miserably. If you lease, success depends on what cloud platforms you are using. Google? O365? None? Google = Chromebooks for sure O365 = kind of pretty much anything except Chromebooks None = start doing some heavy research and trialling

I found it very hard to find a Chromebook with dual cameras. Only ones I could find were Acers/Lenovos.. I think 500e's like @dhicks says. Not great cameras though.

Could be asking for trouble there IMO. (definitely are) BYOD is fine if all the devices are the same e.g. Chromebooks. I wouldn't like to take on a mixtures of devices. Paid up Cisco Meraki is probably the most comprehensive platform out there.... i think the exception is Chromebooks. It'll certainly do Windows, Android, Ipad, Mac. If it were me I'd settle on a hardware platform (Chromebooks, Windows laptops, Ipads, whatever), choose your management platform wisely, then implement a policy that either the school provides the device or families do for school use only where the student is the sole user of the device. The user experience will vary so much for each student that it won't be worth doing... and there will be inequality issues... you see where I'm going. ---> Not legal. Not by a long long shot. My 5p's worth.

Hi all, I have a slightly odd one ..... I'm in the process of putting our Ruckus ZD and AP's on their own VLAN.... VLAN30. The ZD has several SSID's each with their own VLAN.... VLAN 31, VLAN 32 VLAN 33 etc. Cisco switches: All AP's and the ZD are on trunk ports configured to carry each VLAN.... Tagged. PVID for the ZD & AP ports is VLAN30.... Untagged. So the config for each AP port looks like this... 1T, 30U, 31T, 32T, 33T. Problem: I am able to obtain a DHCP address and get on the network on all the VLANs except for the Default VLAN.. VLAN1.... which has a DHCP scope due to be decommissioned soon. I need this to push out a WiFi profile for the new SSIDs. IP Helper is definitely passing DHCP requests to the DHCP server.... cabled machines on VLAN 1 picking up an IP no problem. My switches are connected via LAG trunks (LACP) which are all tagged with each VLAN, except VLAN1 which is untagged. Config on the LAG trunks look like this.... 1U, 30T, 31T, 32T, 33T. Should the LAGs have VLAN 1 tagged ?... But surely this would prevent cabled machines, not just WiFi. Bit stuck.... any suggestions ? Cheers in advance

Hi all, Anyone using Grandstream WP810 WiFi VOIP phones ? I had these put in a few months ago and am having loads of problems with them. They: Keep freezing, drop calls, don't ring, buttons become unresponsive, call quality is hit and miss, always need rebooting to clear the problem. Firmware is up to date. They're on their own SSID.. AES encryption. Wifi shows good strength on the handset. One thing I haven't done is put them on their own VLAN which is happening soon. Tried them on 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz exclusively... no difference. QOS is enabled on our switches but can't find any QOS settings on our old Ruckus Zonedirector Z1100. Cisco switches have auto voice VLANs enabled --- may need to play with this. Odd thing is that the cabled deskphones are fine. Are these handsets just cr@p ? Cheers in advance

Not sure what the disks are. They're whatever populated the NAS when I bought it. Awful though. They're 4 x old 5400rpm SATA's, RAIDed. Network is LACP dual 1GbE NIC's. Just not getting the throughput I need. A very annoying thing about these QNAP's is when they fill up you lose the web interface, have to reboot, and hope you get to your files in time to delete something before it cuts the network again. Not good. What kind of network speeds are you guys achieving in Veeam with Synology's ??? Anyone have 10GbE on those ?

Why not just buy your own? It always end up cheaper than leasing even with manufacturer support costs. I think what they mean is 'Buy our old kit from us and you can keep it and look after it yourself'

Hi all, Currently backing up about 12 VM's / 16TB daily (Veeam B&R) to a couple of QNAP TS412U NAS's. They're pretty terrible devices... poor LAN speed and awful disk speed. They're due for replacement now and I'm just after some opinions on what you might be using as on-site backup hardware, whether it be NAS, iSCSI to a server... whatever. Main requirement is much bigger disk capacity and I must improve the network speed so 10GbE is probably a must. What do you run ? Cheers in advance

I've managed to get mine deploying as per @Michael 's settings. Reg tweak deployed via GPP (Computer GPP) Point and Print server defined without prompt. (User GPO) Didn't work the other day... now its worked on some new laptops I'm setting up. Hhhhmm Microsoft just reek. It's become sooo sooo poor.

Has any actually managed to do a printer deployment via GPO per user? My reg tweak is working for existing printer installations... but new machines... not pulling the shared printer or driver through unless I manually add them... then it will install without prompt. This is on a Papercut virtual print queue. Point and print is disabled. Reg tweak is present. ?????????

Ditch the mapped drive and use a Network Location target instead.

Try adding a network location instead of a mapped drive. Maps with legacy software tend to use all paths from the root of the drive, not the target directory. I think its a hangover from the days of CD ROMS and may be hard coded to root. Right click 'This PC' and 'Add Network Location'. That might do it. GPO is in User GPP.

Using the 3rd segment with that mask (/22) would give me: 10.1.0.0 10.1.4.0 10.1.8.0 10.1.12.0 ISP is a thought... not relevant for now but maybe in the future. Good point!.

Its all of those but carving up the WiFi into separate SSIDs on their own VLAN.... Staff tablets/laptops, pupil laptops, pupil tablets, guest. Also...wired offices, IT rooms etc.

Hi all, hope you're good. Currently in the process of carving up a flat network into VLANS. I've identified the need for about 20 VLANS. The aim is to separate traffic from anything that doesn't need to to broadcast to anything else. IP addressing... to keep it simple for my headspace... I want VLAN10, VLAN20, VLAN30, VLAN40 etc and IP address segments to match. Apart from it being a waste of a million private IP addresses, for the sake of simplicity... any reason why I shouldn't use: /22 VLAN10 - 10.10.x.x VLAN20 - 10.20.x.x VLAN30 - 10.30.x.x Rather than... /22 VLAN10 - 10.10.1.x VLAN20 - 10.10.4.x VLAN30 - 10.10.8.x Yes there will be a huge number of networks kind of wasted but does it matter ? Single site with approx 1000 devices max. How do you guys do it for simplicity ? Cheers in advance

Tbh, its only these devices updating that max the connection. Cache has made a big difference. I'm currently monitoring the stats for when the contract is up.We're on a 100mb bearer too!

Hi all, I'm hitting an issue where by our Ipads are absolutely hammering our Internet connection whilst I think they're either looking for updates, updating apps or syncing with the MDM. External Smoothwall traffic graphs get maxed and all the top use IP's are all Ipads. Our Ruckus has bandwidth throttling on the WAN they're connected to but even at 0.5mbs per device (per station in Ruckus speak), there's so many of them they're hogging the connection. Any lower bandwidth and the device is pretty unuseable. Has anyone any tips on shaping the network traffic for these things. Currently the network is pretty flat, but being VLAN'd this summer so I'll have more control over each subnet. Connection is 100mb/s leased line. We've 400 Ipads across about 15 Ruckus AP's. ZoneDirector 1100. MDM is Mosyle - is there somewhere in there to configure scheduling for updates/checking in ? Smoothwall - Bandwidth limited subnets ? Idea's anyone ?? Cheers in advance
