@Davit2005 & @synaesthesia --- I did put a route into Network/Subnets for VLAN 1 -- still no connectivity --- Also defined VLAN1 in Network/Interfaces on the adapter carrying the VLANs - no effect. --- There is a route missing somewhere but I can't find where -- the DC is the authoritive DNS server on the network so I think the issue is that the forwarders (8.8.8.8 etc) get out but the DC can't find a route back to the other VLANs. The clients on the 10.10.x.1 network are they able to ping the DC when the DC has it's gateway on the Smoothwall. Is the DC able to resolve DNS queries or ping external IP addresses i.e. 8.8.8.8 try using NSLOOKUP on the DC and specify an external server and see if it resolves DNS. --- No. Can't ping the DC when the DC gateway is Smoothwall.

Hi all, Got a query on why something is happening... this has to be DNS??? Created VLAN's on an internal interface in Smoothwall. Everything working fine. Packets are going to and from where should, routing is tested and fine. L3 is switch doing the LAN routing & gateways for the VLANs. Next hop address is Smoothwall. VLAN 1 is still currently the main subnet for this network - 10.122.x.x, gateway = Smoothwall. DCs & DNS servers are on this subnet. I've changed the gateway on DC1 to the L3 switch VLAN1 gateway - 10.10.x.1, for the VLAN clients to get DHCP address via the L3 IP helper... all good. Everything connecting everywhere fine. If I change the DC gateway back to Smoothwall, the VLAN clients lose internet immediately but can still ping outside by IP address. Yes this causes loss of connectivity to the DC as Smoothwall can't route the VLANs to the DC but why cant I resolve external domain names ? I'm obviously fouling up the DC's route by changing the gateway but what is trying to get back from the the DC to the VLAN clients to cause loss of connectivity? ????? Cheers in advance

Hi all, Just about to roll out school hosted email accounts for students 11-18 --> Gmail. Staff are on O365 and I'm keen to keep these separate.... different domain name etc. These students have never had school issued mail accounts before. What opinions do you have on the the pitfalls... specifically student to student abuse, inappropriate teacher / student communication etc. ..... and how do you go about locking this down and monitoring inappropriate behaviour. Would love to hear some facts/opinion on what mayhem this might cause and/or benefits. Cheers in advance

Hi all, Anyone have any recommendations for laptops for class trolleys? Min i3/Ryzen 3/5 8GB RAM 256 disk preferably NVMe. 14" screen min. NIC port preferable. Needs to be tough. These are going into a secondary... need to be robust and keyboards need to be replaceable for when the cherubs pull keys off. Just setting up Google properly and not ready for Chromebooks yet... these need to Windows. Cheers in advance.

Compatibles here.... as long as you get the correct manufacturer specific coded transceiver you're OK. GBICs.com are reasonably priced... you might also want to look at Direct Access cables if you're patching in fairly close proximity.

Hi all, Just had a load of new ~Smart MX75 screens installed. Can anyone help me with a couple of Smoothwall related issues ?? 1. HTTPS inspection doesn't seem to be being bypassed I created a Guardian/Policy Objects/Categories category called 'Smart Screens' listing the IP's of the screens. Created a new Web Filter/Manage Policies/ policy to Allow All. Created an HTTPS Inspection policy to 'Do not inspect' 2. Smoothwall is blocking the media content in the Android(y) apps. Reports/Realtime web filter report shows all the URL's being blocked showing the category group 'Unauthenticated Users'. Where am I going wrong ??

Hi all, Anyone have this working in Chrome? Was fine until updates to Chrome v 90 something. Also might coincide with reconfiguring our VLANs. It looks like the connection is being dropped rather than displaying my block page, although I have the policy set correctly in Guardian/Block Page to 'always show block page'. Looks like it shows fine in Firefox and I get mixed results in Edge. Edge = 888.com shows the block page but Facebook.com doesn't. Firefox = shows for everything blocked Chrome - shows never It's likely something to do with https inspection but I can't see anything being filtered. I can't even be bothered to get in touch with Smoothwall because their support is so terrible and they've ignored my last few support requests. Any ideas ? Cheers in advance

Ebuyer Business. DELLs. (Theres a similar thread going on re getting hold of switches. Said the same.) EB are good.

Many will disagree I'm sure, but first port of call for me is always Ebuyer Business. They always come up with the goods for me and always cheaper, maybe after a haggle... or they'll give you options. They've knocked 15K off the last couple of big purchases I've made compared to others. Insight IMO are too big for their own good and aren't competitive. I was speaking to Misco recently about a fairly significant purchase and wasn't impressed. Used to use them a lot but they just don't cut it so I wouldn't personally.

@Andycat decide what you want and go speak to some of the big suppliers. There's tons of stock around from my experience.

Nor me... in fact got one sitting on my floor that came yesterday. Ordered it on Tuesday at 4.00pm. If a supplier can't supply, don't use them. Go talk to one of the giants. They have clout with the manufacturers.

I've got a few Cisco SG / SX range switches and they are very good, plenty of options and not too pricey either.
