  1. For some of us - space is an issue. I can fit 400 avi's of decent qulality on to 1 HDD, i dont have the space for 400 dvd cases, even the slim lines. So i prefer not having DVD's. IF i could download an AVI of a film for say £2, then i would. I'm always buying 3 for £5 dvd deals in asda to watch with the gf but if i could download them legally i would.
  2. Botched being the key word. it'll work fine, like people using mic cables for DMX, but it doesn't meet the standard. RANK, i've done this just to see what is was like, didn't like the sound through it.
  3. We couldn't get a CC4 package ither, so just manually installed it on over 50 machines. wasn't too bad to do.
  4. Pretty amazing stuff, Couldn't you use a line between the controls and the object as a reference to go left right from? You could triangulate that line, couldn't you.
  5. I know how you feel - I was at work. The girlfriend had a few words to shout about. And the few hundred digs throughout the last week. I got a card game for the pair of us to play and a locket type thing but a mainly one for keys. Got her a top and a milkybar.
  6. We only use it to stop little pests from causing loops in the network and taking it down. Where we have multiple link we have channel bonded/agragated/trunked them, so do not need STP for that.
  7. with the invention of vle/mle/lp's and portals - is there any need for anything like this?
  8. interestingly we were told by rm not to use spanning tree at one of their technical seminars (we do use it) never had an issue with it.
  9. not rubbish - the class A amp i have connected up for my room cannot handle an 'open cuircuit' if i did it would be a huge waste of a decent amp. NOT all amps can cope with no loads, some have load resistors built in, some amps have advanced circuitry so that they ''know'' if these is nothing, some even adjust the input gain depending upon the loads impedance. Amps should be turned off before this and also allow time for any residual currents in the voice coils to dissipate. The voice coil(s) are inductive so have a slight capacitance. amps have capacitors to store energy for long bursts and will continue to output signal after being turned off (some dont i know). that's the idea behind speakon, not easy to unplug unless you know how - like the powercons. anyone who is untrained in this simple task should not be doing it. Same here, i'm now 19 and have my own 32 channel rig, and work for the local council on a 32 channel rig i designed for them. When i was in year nine i was working on a 24 channel rig with about 8k's of radio mics, in ears and other bits and bobs. But by then i had learnt to read so new all the manuals inside out and could actually use the gear. (i was supervised at all times i must add). In this situation what would be technically the best thing would be to have the amp perminantly installed and away from hands, then have the inputs for plugging things into. You could also put in a compressor/limiter to stop people overdriving the system. (very good idea if you let the space out). It is a bad idea to switch anything above 20w. The voltages on my PA's hit 72V or higher... that can and will kill. Someone else mentioned commoning the ground - also a bad idea incase someone uses a bridged amp. the biggest fear i would have with this is switching the speakers while amps were on. And if there was signal, you could destroy a speaker. a speaker relies on being sent a smooth sine like signal, starting at 0 and ending at 0, 0 being pd across terminals. start that mid flow and you may cause the voice coil to distort. This would be an additive effect, distortion kills pa voice coils (but it can add to a guitars effect).
  10. I actually have to use cat6 cable for something - admittedly it's not computer orientated. For those lampys out there, you can use cat6 for running DMX signals as it's certified up to 250MHz, which i think is the DMX baud rate. I've seen it being posted on professional sites and amateur that you can but only for perminant installs it would seem.
  11. i didn't really answer the question; if it's one room with a switch in the room or even next door - there will be little difference between 5e and 6. And i would got for 5e personally (asumming upto say 20m) With cat6/fiber uplinks back to the network. Get a gig switch and spend the money on improving the NAS.
  12. tape/portable hard drive then if you want to move it about or multiple blu ray disks for worm.
  13. lol, we get it too. I usually say no, we are full time staff, we spent the time doing XYZ and don't ask how theirs were. I guess it's an idea to tell staff in an e-mail (done that before), or bring it up in briefing (done that before t00.)
  14. But you will still have to run cat5/6/7 to the AP... not forgetting that that 54/108/future speeds wireless bandwidth is shared amongst the devices connected. Where as cables is dedicated from switch to host.
  15. Started snowing about an hour ago - not settleing yet tho. That's Bexleyheath - south east London.
  16. You normally wouldn't switch the output of an amp, usually you switch the signal before it hits the power amp. Using a switch in this way could damage the amp's. Behringer do a nice and cheap line mixer which may be worth looking at.
  17. I copy all work onto DVD's, then move all the original files into a NAS (will soon be moving that onto an x-raid.) We'll will be keeping the work for ever. (HDD space is cheap, as are DVD's and storing 100's of DVD cases is simple providing they are numbered and archived correctly. Staff, students and all other files are treated the same.
  18. Still have the issue here. Tis a shame it's taking so long.
  19. looks a bit like a piczo created site. RANK.
  20. Rather boring pile of junk with an apple on it. sorry to dissapoint.
  21. serif have a movie plus that the students use - looks a bit simple, dont know how good it is.
  22. hi, has anyone here actually managed to package both of these up separately?
  23. I have 2 at home. Both G3 and G4 versions.
  24. This looks like the best idea yet, plus we can make possibly the biggest table? so we would need; acrylic, IR LED's, a sheet of drafting vellum, silicon+roller, modified PS3 eye, floppy disk, computer, power supply, projector, heat absorbing and Ir absorbing filters, cabinet/table, lots of config time, even more play time. anyone think that this is too much to do?
  25. apple speced it - what would you expect. it also only has 2GB ram, curses. yeah i've alreddy had it out to play with, why we don't have 2 on the xserve but do on the xraid i do not know.
