  1. ok - so using triacs to control the power getting through does create harmonics, but not huge ones... a 60W light bulb at 10%'s harmonic distortion is nothing to worry about, the cable used for lighting is usually well over rated for the load. i don't see you running into your drama department and telling them not to use their dimmers? if it was dangerous we wouldn't be aloud to use them. and it's the same effect from switch mode PSU i do believe, but we still run labs full of em (although they have power factor correction usually now)

will removing the cmos battery should i find one simply reset the bios back to it's defaults? how likely is it to break the laptop (not that it's currently usable)?

    BIOS password

thanks, urm ideally taking the thing apart to find a jumper/battery is the last resort. i can't crack the password as i can't boot into anything to run a crack from but good thinking on the cmos battery - will have a look in the service manuals now. thanks

  10. is it a static website or PHP, ASP, JSP ect?
  11. Lego is such a great toy/ learning tool - reminds me of when myself and one other programmed a Lego railway with points, station level crossing and reversing bufferstops. oh and an engine shead. pic of one of the two layout we had - not bad considering we were 11ish at the time.
  12. my Samsung nc10 has been solid for 2 years now - i imagine it would last the time.
  13. IMAP and POP are very similar to set up - basically when setting up your client you choose IMAP and use the IMAP servers from the provider as opposed to POP
  14. I have an IMAP server - i can send and receive from multiple locations all at once and can see everything form each location. I do this with AOL and googlemail. I'm a little confused to the question as the solution seems to be quite simple? - just set both mail clients to look at the same IMAP server? (most have concurrent POP and IMAP functionality)
  15. I respectfully retract my statement - I did not know this, thanks for enlightening me
  16. in that case, I'm calling no 100 as there is no proof (in my eyes) that we have been to the moon or that there are golf ball's upon it.
  17. i thought ftp was foiled twisted pair but it is defiantly shielded and doesn't mean flat sorry. wiki has more info Twisted pair - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, i realise it's not always the best source.
  18. the flat ones we had did have twisted pairs - almost like the core had been braided all together. it wasn't like telephone cable.... this is twisted Google Image Result for http://www.asia.ru/images/img/237676/FLT.jpg and this isn't Google Image Result for http://www.solwise.co.uk/images/cable-flat8-small.jpg so might be worth making sure you can get twisted stuff if poss.
  19. we had a load of flat 1m patch cables from CPC, they wern't bad but havent lasted int he classroom - we used them in the cabs instead. dont remember any problems or issues with speed.
  20. i use sennheiser cx300II would seem to fit you'r bill. mine came with 3 different size rubber inserts for different size ears. good overall frequency response at a reasonable output level. I use them as in ear monitors when drumming and they keep up with my thrash metal playing, so they can go to a painful volume. only bad thing is the cable is not an even split, its a round the neck job with one earphone longer than the other.
  21. Yeah - that is a down side, but if you just want to learn something new or dip your fingers into lots of subject to see which you like the best it's not a bad idea really.
  22. The Open University have some free courses available under a scheme called Open Learn; OpenLearn - The Open University I personally haven't had a chance to look through all the contents there (there is a lot) but the ones I've looked at seem like they're interesting, not too difficult and for free i can't complain. There's basic stuff in there and some more advanced stuff to get your teeth into in a wide number of topics. If you have a spare half an hour have a look through and see what you think. I believe you can access all of the content on Open Learn without needing to register or log in. Hope this post is useful to someone.
  23. today's events shown on tv have got me thinking - running a marathon, how hard can it be? is there anyone here who's run one and could help me put together a plan to get me into physical shape to run the london one next year or the year after? Many thanks
  24. BlueWater is one.
  25. Morning all, I'm looking for a supplier where I can purchase a number of 2 or 4GB USB flash drives from. Ideally I'm looking for a price of less than £1/GB. Anyone know of such a supplier. Many thanks
