Kind of fitting given that we're near the 10 year anniversary of the Enterprise Hotfix rollup, and while SP1 went officially out of support in 2020 new updates have been released from time to time. Definitely push to bring the switch work forward, if its budgeted for next year then the only thing Finance have to worry about is cashflow in the short term, and a 600 seat school LAN* should easily be absorbable in the cash reserve. If that isn't going to be possible, you might want to have a play with firewall / qos rules to see if you can give traffic to/from the phones priority. but without vlans or a separate IP range for them I'm not sure that is possible, unless the phones can qos tag their traffic onto the LAN and then the router/firewall make the necessary priority changes in its queue. I've done something similar once and it seemed to improve things enough to get the problem off my back for a few months ahead of moving to a 1000/1000 link.... but to be honest it may also simply have been luck.

Applocker rule to allow execution from a known/predictable path? It would give them a gateway to bypassing applocker rules in general, but once you give them python or a compiler all bets are off anyway, and you have to hope your AV is smart enough to detect malicious intent.

Do the old ex-3com / H3C products have J numbers? Latest version I could see is A5500_EI_5.20.R2222P12 March 2020. As a troubleshooting step, if a new cable makes no difference, try putting another switch between the smoothwall and the 5500. That should confirm/eliminate issues of compatibility between the nics.

Seating plans so they use the same computer each lesson. Sync the Student Work folder during their first lesson (it will only pull down that student's folder due to sharepoint permissions magic), then they just work in there. However if you are building websites with Dreamweaver, and if Dreamweaver codes in absolute paths, this will all fall apart. I expect however they will all be relative urls and so should be just fine. The Teacher will need to also sync the student work folders for each of their classes to their teaching machine/laptop. However, there is a possibility in this specific case the webpages might work straight out of the sharepoint folders on the web... which would be a pretty cool demo of some very old tech running on some very new tech based on some very old tech. Side note: Sharepoint's foundations are actually a Microsoft product that competed with Dreamweaver back in the late 1990's.

Class Teams are definitely the way to go. Once the first (dummy) assignment has been set for a class, all the folders you need are set up. Head over to the "Student Work" Document Library, in there you will find a "Working Files" folder with all the student folders, secured so that only the student and the team owners can accesss. They can then work directly in these (sync'd to their computer if they need to use classic Windows apps that don't talk 'onedrive'), for course that are mainly Office document based, then setting normal assignments would be the way to go.

LGfL has always been quite different from the other RBC's and their successors. I heard rumors of such open ports back in the earliest days, but by 2005 each school was isolated. In my experience the schools have always had some degree of control and since 2011 almost total control of whether they want the full "option 1" service or the more-or-less-bare-wires "option 2". They have also always been very hot on security. Their stance today seems sensible, and perhaps just a little behind the curve, but many frustrations people have with their restriction are derived from their knowledge that most schools (and organizations in general) have *no idea* how hostile and dangerous the internet is, so they took steps to protect everyone which frustrated some (for example they put an outright ban on open RDP back in 2011 and Remote Access tools in general). They have relaxed that position over the years, but somethings they still insist that the Head Teacher reads and signs off on risks before they will action. This, in my view is prudent. I run a large option 1 site with multiple subnets and have no problems.

I've been doing as @SYNACK for over a decade. No big deal. One thing doing it that way gives you is the total cover that the LGFL firewall gives you (anything goes wrong it very much not your problem or fault), and the flexibility of running your own as the gateway between your private subnets and the LGfL subnet. If you really don't like that you can always move to be an option 2 site, but I have long felt it doesn't offer anything that outwieght the peace of mind that your connection to the internet and the filtering and firewall are entirely somebody else's *responsibility*.

I shared a blog post somewhere by a person leading this effort to expose the package manager api to other windows components but I can't find it anywhere now. The inference was that the team that built v1.0, by ignoring some fundamental windows coding paradigms and instead adopting some store-app based coding patterns, made it extremely difficult to open up the api to the rest of windows.

It should have been written in dotnet and it should expose its interfaces to powershell to be scriptable. Yet it is not and does not. Its automatable if your idea of automation are clever .bat files. It's almost like it was written by a team of uninspired 1990's era windows administrator lead by someone who uses linux in the bedroom because it's so much better than M$ Wind0w$ I am quite grumpy about the about of regressions in functionality I am seeing at the moment.

I suspect they are buying the customers and that the MIS and Finance system (with their ongoing operational costs) are actually on the books as a liability, bringing the value of the transaction down to 16M.
